Incidence and Classification of Chest Wall Deformities in Breast Augmentation Patients.

Although chest wall deformities (CWDs) are seen four times more often in males than in females, most patients who consult plastic surgery clinics in our country are females. Breast augmentation and augmentation mastopexy were performed with a total of 812 breast implants in 406 patients. Forty-three of these patients had various CWDs. The CWD patient ages ranged from 18 to 43 years. Patients were observed for 6 months to 8 years (mean of approximately 3 years). Pectus excavatum (PE) was present in 22 patients, pectus carinatum (PC) in five patients, Poland syndrome (PS) in two patients, sunken

Outcomes following cerebrospinal fluid shunting in high-grade glioma patients.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical course of high-grade central nervous system gliomas is occasionally complicated by hydrocephalus. The risks of shunt placement and clinical outcome following CSF diversion in this population are not well defined. METHODS: The authors retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of patients with pathologically confirmed WHO grade III or IV gliomas with shunt-treated hydrocephalus at their institution. Outcomes of patients in this cohort were compared with those of patients who underwent shunt treatment for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Hospital-reported outcomes in a na

Fractional high intensity focused radiofrequency in the treatment of mild to Moderate laxity of the lower face and neck: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aging process is commonly associated with skin laxity in the lower face and neck. Conventional surgery can correct this at least to some extent, but is invasive. Fractional high-intensity focused radiofrequency delivered to the dermis with insulated microneedles has recently attracted attention in facial rejuvenation. The present pilot study was designed to assess the efficacy of HiFR for skin laxity of the lower face and neck. METHODS: Thirty-three patients (7 males, 26 females, age range 37-74 years) with mild to moderate skin laxity of the lower face/neck participa

ECG risk markers for atrial fibrillation and sudden cardiac death in minimally symptomatic obstructive sleep apnoea: the MOSAIC randomised trial.

OBJECTIVE: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), atrial fibrillation (AF) and sudden cardiac death (SCD) may occur concomitantly, and are of considerable epidemiological interest, potentially leading to morbidity and mortality. Effective treatment of OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) could prevent progression and/or recurrence of AF and factors leading to SCD. Recently, a randomised controlled trial showed a statistically and clinically significant prolongation of measures of cardiac repolarisation after CPAP withdrawal in symptomatic patients with moderate to severe OSA. Whether o

Treatment of Ingrown Toenail with a Shape Memory Alloy Device.

BACKGROUND: We sought to report the clinical results of a new conservative treatment modality that uses a shape memory alloy device in patients with ingrown toenail. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 41 patients with ingrown toenail treated with the K-D device (S&C Biotech, Seoul, South Korea) between April 2013 and July 2014. Recurrence rate, cosmetic results, pain during the treatment period, and patient satisfaction were the major outcome measures. RESULTS: Patients were followed for at least 6 months (mean ± SD, 8.6 ± 2.1 months; range, 6-12 months). Recurrence was seen in

[Treatment choice in dacryostenosis based on single-photon emission computed tomography and X-ray computed tomography findings].

AIM: To develop surgical indications in dacryostenosis within the vertical portion of lacrimal pathways that would consider findings of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) combined with X-ray computed tomography (CT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 96 patients with isolated vertical-portion dacryostenosis (127 cases) were enrolled. The examination included collecting Munk's scores for epiphora, optical coherence tomography of the lower tear meniscus, lacrimal scintigraphy, and SPECT/CT. Group 1 (40 cases) was composed of patients with lacrimal obstruction on CT, group 2 (87 c

Sociodemographic characteristics of Turkish patients who violated a supervised probation program.

We aimed to investigate sociodemographic characteristics of individuals under a supervised probation program used in Turkey and to compare characteristics of noncompliant versus no-need-to-treat individuals in order to determine the effect of sociodemographic characteristics on success of the supervised probation program. In total, 4,006 individuals who submitted to the supervised probation program of our hospital were evaluated retrospectively from patient data and follow-up records. The mean age of patients was 28.4 ± 8.0 years. We compared the sociodemographic characteristics of "no-need-to

Immediate nipple reconstruction with a C-V flap and areolar reconstruction with an autograft of the ipsilateral areola.

BACKGROUND: The authors report a new nipple-areolar complex (NAC) reconstruction technique using an autograft of the ipsilateral areola for breast cancer with nipple invasion. METHODS: A total of 43 patients with breast cancer involving nipple invasion underwent oncoplastic surgery with NAC reconstruction. The nipple was reconstructed with a C-V flap, and the areola was autografted onto the new areola bed after the ipsilateral areola was confirmed to be tumour-free. The cosmetic results were self-evaluated by the patients after chemotherapy or radiotherapy according to a 4-point scoring syste

Waiting time prioritisation: Evidence from England.

A number of OECD countries have introduced waiting time prioritisation policies which give explicit priority to severely ill patients with high marginal disutility of waiting. There is however little empirical evidence on how patients are actually prioritised. We exploit a unique opportunity to investigate this issue using a large national dataset with accurate measures of severity on nearly 400,000 patients. We link data from a national patient-reported outcome measures survey to administrative data on all patients waiting for a publicly funded hip and knee replacement in England during the y

A Preventative Respiratory Protocol to Identify Trauma Subjects at Risk for Respiratory Compromise on a General In-Patient Ward.

BACKGROUND: Patients are at risk for respiratory complications after sustaining blunt chest trauma, yet contradictory evidence exists about the utility of prophylactic respiratory therapy to reduce respiratory complications in this population. This study assessed the effectiveness of a proactive respiratory protocol on an in-patient ward to identify trauma patients at risk for pulmonary complications, administer appropriate therapies, and prevent deterioration requiring transfer to the ICU. METHODS: Trauma patients received a respiratory therapy evaluation at the time of admission to a genera

Using a qualitative approach to conceptualize concerns of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 associated plexiform neurofibromas (pNF) across the lifespan.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) plexiform neurofibromas (pNFs) are associated with a variety of symptoms and concerns that affect patients' quality of life (QOL), highlighting the value of incorporating the patients' perspective when evaluating treatment outcomes. To better conceptualize the experience of patients with pNFs, this qualitative study sought to identify the most important outcomes to assess from the perspective of patients, families, and clinicians. Clinicians, patients age 5 years old and above, and parents of patients aged 5-17 years participated in semi-structured interviews to

Secondary correction of nasal deformities in cleft lip and palate patients: surgical technique and outcome evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Nasal deformity associated with cleft lip and palate is a highly challenging reconstructive problem in rhinoplasty. In the literature, several operative solutions and evaluation methods have been described, however these do not offer a standard procedure for the surgeon. Our aim was to standardize our surgical technique-as much as the uniqueness of each case allowed it-based on the most frequent deformities we had faced; and to evaluate our results via a postoperative patient satisfaction questionnaire. Between 2012 and 2014 12 consecutive patients with combined cleft lip and palat

Emerging Indications for Reverse Shoulder Arthroplasty.

Historically, reverse shoulder arthroplasty was reserved for older, low-demand patients in whom rotator cuff arthropathy was diagnosed. Other common indications included sequelae of previously treated proximal humerus fractures, failed anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty, tumor resection, and rheumatoid arthritis in the elderly population. Unpredictable implant durability and high complication rates have limited the use of reverse shoulder arthroplasty to a narrow group of patients. Over the past decade, however, research has led to an improved understanding of the biomechanics behind reverse

The Burden of Pediatric Invasive Meningococcal Disease in Spain (2008-2013).

BACKGROUND: Invasive meningococcal disease remains a rare infectious disease not only with high mortality but also with important morbidity. Until recently no universal vaccine existed against serogroup B, which explains most of the cases in settings like Europe. The objective of this study was to analyze the clinical course and sequelae of meningococcal disease in Spain. METHODS: Retrospective review of all children younger than 15 years admitted to any of the 36 hospitals in the MENDICOS Spanish network (www.mendicos.org) with confirmed or probable invasive meningococcal disease in children

Improvement in patient-reported physical and mental health after parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism.

BACKGROUND: The majority of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) are diagnosed without the classic signs of renal or osseous complications. Vague and subjective symptoms have been attributed to PHPT but have been difficult to measure during the medical encounter. The Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) of the National Institutes of Health contains validated measures of physical and mental health that can be administered by the use of computer-adaptive testing (CAT). The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of PROMIS assessment in the

Risk Factors for Intracranial Haemorrhage in Accidents Associated with the Shower or Bathtub.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research on bathroom accidents. It is unknown whether the shower or bathtub are connected with special dangers in different age groups or whether there are specific risk factors for adverse outcomes. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis included all direct admissions to the Emergency Department at the Inselspital Bern, Switzerland from 1 January 2000 to 28 February 2014 after accidents associated with the bathtub or shower. Time, age, location, mechanism and diagnosis were assessed and special risk factors were examined. Patient groups with and without intr

The impact of small kidneys.

BACKGROUND: Small kidneys due to renal hypodysplasia (RHD) result from a decrease in nephron number. The objectives of this study were to identify clinical variables that determine long-term renal outcome in children with RHD and to define the role of kidney size as a predictor of developing end-stage renal disease (ESRD). METHODS: This was a single-center retrospective cohort analysis. The primary outcome was development of ESRD. We identified 202 RHD cases, with 25 (12%) reaching ESRD at mean age of 8.9 (±6.6) years. RESULTS: Children with RHD with a known genetic syndrome had the smallest
