[Clinical significance of suicidal behaviour in delusional disorder: a 44 case-series descriptive study].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Suicidal behaviour in delusional disorder (DD) has been poorly studied. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of clinically significant depression, suicidal ideation and behaviour in these patients, and to relate them with psychotic or depressive symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHOD: A cross-sectional study including 44 outpatients with DD (DSM-IV-TR) was conducted. Demographic and clinical data, as well as scores in clinical assessment scales: Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Personal and Social Performance Scale, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (17-ite

Efficacy of extended-release divalproex combined with "condensed" dialectical behavior therapy for individuals with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a significant psychiatric illness for which medication treatments are still being explored. The goal of this study was to assess divalproex extended release (ER) vs placebo for patients receiving dialectal behavior therapy (DBT). METHODS: Patients with BPD received 4 weeks of "condensed DBT." Those with Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90) scores >150 after this treatment were then randomly and blindly assigned to placebo or divalproex ER for 12 weeks. Repeated measures analysis of variance utilizing last observation carried forward was used to as

Tryptophan depletion and emotional processing in healthy volunteers at high risk for depression.

BACKGROUND: Studies in depressed patients have demonstrated the presence of emotional bias toward negative stimuli, as well as dysregulated brain serotonin function. The present study compared the effects of acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) on both an emotional processing and a planning task in never-depressed healthy volunteers at high and low familial risk for depression. METHODS: Young adults with no personal psychiatric history were stratified into two groups based on family history (n = 25). Participants were enrolled in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover ATD study

Eugen Bleuler's Dementia praecox or the group of schizophrenias (1911): a centenary appreciation and reconsideration.

On the 100th anniversary of the publication of Eugen Bleuler's Dementia Praecox or the Group of Schizophrenias, his teachings on schizophrenia from that seminal book are reviewed and reassessed, and implications for the current revision of the category of schizophrenia, with its emphasis on psychotic symptoms, drawn. Bleuler's methods are contrasted with Kraepelin's, and 4 myths about his concept of schizophrenia addressed. We demonstrate that (1) Bleuler's concept of schizophrenia has close ties to historical and contemporary concepts of dissociation and as such the public interpretation of s

Bullous cryothermic dermatitis artefacta induced by deodorant spray abuse.

BACKGROUND: Dermatitis artefacta belongs to a broad spectrum of factitious diseases of lesions usually self-induced by patients. Here we report a surprisingly effective induction of blisters and thermic dermatitis by excessive abuse of common deodorant sprays. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the clinical course and outcome in three patients with dermatitis artefacta induced by deodorant spray. METHODS: A 12-year-old boy only admitted the abuse of deodorant spray after psychiatric intervention. Two adults (21-year-old and 37-year-old women) had borderline personality disorder and frankly reported th

[Nightmares and psychopathology].

Nightmares are long frightening dreams, quite common in psychiatric and general population; they may cause psychological distress and social or occupational dysfunction and are the most common form of parasomnia. They can be divided into post-traumatic nightmares, which are part of post-traumatic stress reaction, idiopathic and stress-induced. This article is a review of studies evaluating the relationship between nightmares and psychopathology, especially in regard to their intensity and content. For example, prepsychotic patients often report nightmares, particularly of body fragmentation an

Psychological resilience and postdeployment social support protect against traumatic stress and depressive symptoms in soldiers returning from Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have examined the prevalence and correlates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and related psychiatric conditions in soldiers returning from Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF), but none have examined whether factors such as psychological resilience and social support may protect against these conditions in this population. METHODS: A total of 272 predominantly older reserve/National Guard OEF/OIF veterans completed a mail survey assessing traumatic stress and depressive symptoms, resilience, and social support. RESULTS: R

Fibroblast Growth Factors and Their Receptors in Major Depressive Disorder: A Scoping Review of Translational Research.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex psychiatric condition whose pathophysiology extends beyond the classic monoamine hypothesis, involving impaired neuroplasticity, neuroinflammation, HPA axis dysregulation, and altered neurotrophic signaling. The fibroblast growth factor (FGF) system, comprising ligands and their receptors (FGFRs), has emerged as a key candidate regulator of these processes. This scoping review qualitatively synthesizes current clinical, postmortem, and preclinical evidence on the role of the FGF system in MDD and antidepressant response. A structured literature sear

Socio-demographics associated with stress and anxiety level among patients diagnosed with proliferative disease of the haematopoietic system.

OBJECTIVES: The most common psychiatric disorders in cancer patients are anxiety disorders. These arise from negative experiences and personal traumas of the patient, the fear of developing cancer, the fear of death, and anxiety about painful examinations and procedures. This article aims to determine the occurrence and intensity of stress and anxiety in patients diagnosed with proliferative disease of the haematopoietic system and their sociodemographic correlates. METHODS: The study involved 100 patients diagnosed with proliferative disease of the haematopoietic system (acute leukaemia, chr

Utilization patterns of homeless and health care services by homeless veterans in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Ending veteran homelessness remains a priority within the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA). Efforts over the past decade have led to encouraging declines in veteran homelessness but have required significant funds and resources. Analysis of clinical characteristics and utilization patterns of veterans accessing VA homeless programing can clarify the needs of and inform treatment for this subset of the veteran population. Veterans were categorized according to low, moderate, or high rates of VA homeless service use from 2005 to 2024 (N = 1,086,852) and compared based on demographic profi

Increased risk of bipolar disorder following Parkinson's disease: A nationwide population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder with significant neuropsychiatric involvement. However, the temporal association between PD and bipolar disorder (BD) remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using the Korean National Health Insurance Service database (2012-2023). Incident PD cases were identified with a 3-year washout period and matched to controls (1:5) using propensity scores. The primary outcome was incident BD based on repeated psychiatrist-assigned diagnoses. Incidence rates (IRs), incidence r

Peripartum Depression as a Heart-Brain-Endocrine-Immune Syndrome: Neuroendocrine, Cardiovascular, and Inflammatory Pathways Underlying Maternal Vulnerability.

Peripartum depression (PPD) represents one of the most prevalent and disabling psychiatric conditions among women, yet its underlying biology remains poorly integrated across medical disciplines. Emerging evidence highlights PPD as a prototypical disorder of the heart-brain axis, where neuroendocrine changes, immune activation, and cardiovascular dysregulation converge to shape maternal vulnerability. During pregnancy and the postpartum period, abrupt fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone (P4), and placental corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) interact with a sensitized hypothalamic-pituita

Theta burst stimulation of extrastriate body area for body perception in anorexia nervosa: a randomized controlled trial.

Anorexia nervosa is a severe and potentially life-threatening psychiatric disorder characterized by self-starvation, intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body perception. Treatment remains challenging, and effective interventions for adults are limited. The extrastriate body area (EBA), a cortical region involved in body representation, may contribute to the body perception disturbances. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized proof-of-concept trial, we investigated the therapeutic potential of targeted theta burst transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the EBA in pati

Legislative differences in compulsory mental health care for children and adolescents across European countries.

There is growing concern about the protection of children's rights in compulsory psychiatric care. To examine procedural and legal variations in compulsory mental health care for children and adolescents across European nations, the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) commissioned this study. A structured questionnaire was developed using Google Forms and distributed via email to representatives of all 36 ESCAP member countries. The survey gathered information on legislation, commitment criteria, and procedural requirements for compulsory mental health care in minors.

Leveraging fMRI non-stationarity for deep learning classifier training and feature detection to improve schizophrenia diagnosis.

A neurobiologically-based diagnosis with superior reliability in place of clinical interview-based diagnosis is a primary goal in psychiatry. Dynamic functional connectomes (dFCs) identified using change-point detection applied to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data was used to train graph convolutional network (GCN) models to classify persons with psychiatric diagnoses from healthy controls. We examined four samples, adolescent-onset schizophrenia (AOS), adult schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, each with healthy controls (HC) for resting state fMRI (rs-f

Effects of Excessive Sucrose Intake on Aggressive Behavior and Peripheral Stress-Related Hormone and Catecholamines in BALB/c Mice during Adolescent Development.

As binge eating and unbalanced diets increase the prevalence of obesity and metabolic disorders, it has been noted that the increase in psychiatric disorders is also a consequence of diet. The present study examined aggressive behavior and peripheral stress-related hormone and catecholamine levels in BALB/c mice fed a high-sucrose diet during adolescent development. BALB/c mice are rarely used in research assessing the effect of diet, but were used for ethnic and personal differences and as a new experimental model. BALB/c mice were fed a diet in which all carbohydrate components were replaced

The role of mitochondrial dysfunction in Huntington's disease: Implications for therapeutic targeting.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive, autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline, motor dysfunction, and psychiatric disturbances. A common feature of neurodegenerative disorders is mitochondrial dysfunction, which affects the brain's sensitivity to oxidative damage and its high oxygen demand. This dysfunction may plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of Huntington's disease. HD is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the huntingtin gene, which leads to the production of a toxic mutant huntingtin (mHTT) protein. This disruption in mitochondrial
