Efficacy of intranasal non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on pain responses in castrated and tail-docked piglets.

Routine piglet processing procedures, such as surgical castration and tail docking, are known to induce pain and stress, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly administered to mitigate these responses. This study evaluated the effects of processing and NSAID administration on physiological and behavioral indicators of pain and stress in male piglets. A total of 120 piglets (5 days old) were randomly assigned to one of eight treatment groups in a 2 × 4 factorial design, including sham or processed piglets receiving intranasal flunixin meglumine, ketoprofen, meloxicam, o

Toward Precision Fluid Management in Hemodialysis: Adaptive Ultrafiltration Guided by Continuous Relative Blood Volume Monitoring.

Background: Ultrafiltration (UF) during hemodialysis is typically prescribed as a fixed treatment goal and delivered using a largely constant ultrafiltration rate throughout the session. We evaluated whether Adaptive Ultrafiltration (Adaptive UF), a physiological closed-loop control strategy guided by continuous relative blood volume (RBV) monitoring, could improve RBV target attainment while individualizing fluid removal within predefined treatment constraints. Methods: We performed a paired patient-specific in silico study using 119,472 historical hemodialysis treatments from 11,246 U.S. pat

Spatially Resolved Photostimulation of Cardiac Activity Using Optoelectronic Peptides.

Engineering physiologically relevant cardiac substrates requires precise control over both electrical and mechanical cues to guide cardiomyocyte functions and features. In this work, we report a biomolecular-based approach toward spatially controllable photostimulation of cardiac behavior via digital light processing of conductive interfaces on a range of substrate stiffnesses. The symmetric peptide-quaterthiophene-peptide units are designed to form conductive patterns atop biopolymeric hydrogels, allowing for microscale spatial control of photoconductive pathways that can influence cardiomyoc

Impulse oscillometry and traditional pulmonary function testing: correlation, advances and clinical implications.

Impulse oscillometry system (IOS) is an effort-independent pulmonary function testing technique that assesses respiratory system mechanics during tidal breathing and has gained increasing interest as a complementary modality to traditional pulmonary function tests (PFTs), while its physiological relevance and clinical role alongside conventional tests remain incompletely defined. This narrative literature review synthesises evidence on the correlations between IOS parameters and traditional PFT indices, summarises clinical applications across major chronic respiratory diseases, and discusses e

A Preliminary Investigation into the Impact of Re-Testing and Voice Hygienic Advice on Dysphonia Severity Index Scores.

OBJECTIVES: Clinicians use various voice therapy protocols to rehabilitate patients with voice disorders; voice hygienic advice (VHA) is a standard component in most protocols. The list of patient instructions included in VHA targets eliminating the ill effects of dehydration, vocal abuse, and misuse of the vocal mechanism. An objective prognostic evaluation of a vocal intervention's efficiency is performed by comparing pre- and post-intervention changes in acoustic parameters. The effect of retesting via collecting a second sample may have a physiological impact on the acoustic parameters. Th

Dynamic Assessment of Exercise Gas Exchange Efficiency by Breath-by-Breath Volumetric Capnography in Mild-Moderate COPD.

A sizable fraction of dyspneic patients with only mild to moderate COPD exhibit a heightened ventilatory response to exercise relative to metabolic demands, i.e. a high ventilation (V.E)/CO2 output (V.CO2). The lack of continuous assessment of gas exchange efficiency and estimates of arterial CO2 partial pressure has hindered our understanding of the physiological underpinnings of this dynamic phenomenon. We compared key indices of gas exchange efficiency relative to the intra-breath CO2 profile as a function of expired volume using breath-by-breath volumetric capnography in 30 patients (FEV1

A data-informed multidimensional composite score for stress assessment.

Occupations such as the military, emergency responders, and athletes demand acute physical, cognitive and psychosocial effort. Individuals in these roles face task-specific stressors, including extreme heat, sustained mental focus and performance under social pressure, resulting in variable stress responses. Comparing individual stress responses is challenging due to the complex physiological, cognitive, and emotional interactions. This study presents a novel, data-focused multidimensional approach to assessing stress by quantitatively integrating cognitive, psychosocial, and physiological ind

The effect of differences in viewing environment and method on physiological responses and perceptual stability while viewing three-dimensional images.

BACKGROUND: Stereoscopic (3D) viewing can induce motion sickness and visual discomfort under specific environmental conditions. Light adaptation is not always linear; preceding light exposure influences subsequent physiological responses (hysteresis). However, hysteresis in 3D viewing has rarely been studied. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study examined whether physiological responses exhibit hysteresis-history-dependent asymmetries between increasing and decreasing illuminance phases-under combinations of low illuminance, color temperature, and viewing mode. METHODS: Eight healthy adults (age

Midazolam as premedication for less invasive surfactant administration: a prospective single-centre audit.

BACKGROUND: Less invasive surfactant administration (LISA) is now a routinely practised method of administration of surfactant to neonates with respiratory distress. Many centres routinely use analgesia and/or sedation premedication prior to the LISA procedure; however, many different drugs are presently used, and the optimal premedication drug is unknown. We aimed to assess the efficacy and short-term safety of routine midazolam 50-100 µg/kg use as premedication for LISA. METHODS: This was a prospective single-centre audit of routine midazolam use as premedication before the LISA procedure o

Genotypic Variation in Rice Root Exudates Controls Biological Nitrification Inhibition Efficiency in the Rhizosphere.

Nitrification in agricultural soils drives significant nitrogen fertiliser losses and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, particularly in intensively fertilised rice systems. Biological nitrification inhibition (BNI), mediated by plant-derived compounds, offers a promising nature-based strategy to mitigate these losses, but the factors controlling BNI potential remain poorly understood. In this study, BNI mechanisms across five rice genotypes were investigated by combining plant physiology, soil nitrification dynamics and exudate metabolomics. Nitrifier suppression was strongest in the rhizosphere

Engineering Lung-on-a-chip microdevices for respiratory disease modelling and drug testing: A fit-for-purpose framework for design and translational validation.

Lung-on-a-chip (LoAC) technology has emerged as a human-relevant microphysiological approach for respiratory disease modelling and preclinical drug evaluation. However, substantial variation in device architecture, membrane properties, fluidic conditions, mechanical actuation, cellular composition, sensing and manufacturing limits cross-platform comparison and translational confidence. This structured narrative review examines LoAC systems from a fit-for-purpose engineering perspective, emphasising how quantitative design parameters influence biological performance within defined contexts of u

Integrating Physiology and Multi-Omics Reveals Mechanisms Underlying Sperm Activation and Movement in Mandarin Fish (Siniperca chuatsi).

Sperm activation and movement are essential in freshwater fishes, where limited energy reserves and a short motility duration require rapid ATP-driven motility regulated by osmolality and ions. However, the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying osmolality and ion regulation in mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) remain unclear, and ions in aquaculture systems may exert additional effects. Here, we integrated physiology with transcriptomic and proteomic analyses to characterize the effects of osmolality and ions on sperm motility and identify key genes, proteins, and regulatory networ

Multidomain gait and inter-limb asymmetry measures discriminate early knee osteoarthritis prior to radiographic change.

BACKGROUND: Subtle gait alterations and inter-limb asymmetry may precede radiographic knee osteoarthritis (OA), but isolated biomechanical variables often lack sensitivity for early detection. We evaluated whether multidomain gait and strength measures improve discrimination of symptomatic individuals without radiographic OA. METHODS: One hundred seventeen symptomatic participants with Kellgren-Lawrence grade 0 knees and 60 age-matched controls underwent assessment of walking speed, step length, knee sagittal-plane range of motion, functional mobility, and knee flexor and extensor strength. A multiscale modeling approach to study the role of mechanics and inflammation in the pathophysiology of articular cartilage.

Mechanical loading regulates chondrocyte health in articular cartilage. While physiological stimuli maintain homeostasis, supra-physiological stimuli from joint injuries disrupt it, leading to osteoarthritis (OA). OA progression involves complex mechanical and biochemical interactions across multiple length scales, which are challenging to investigate experimentally. In silico models provide an effective framework to explore these mechanisms. This study developed an integrated multiscale modeling framework for articular cartilage. It combined finite element (FE) models at tissue and cellular s

Multisystemic Consequences of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Haploinsufficiency in the SD-BDNFtm1sage Rat Model.

Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the most pleiotropic signaling molecules in mammalian biology, regulating processes ranging from neuronal survival and synaptic plasticity to metabolic homeostasis. Under physiological conditions, BDNF expression is tightly regulated; however, it may be disrupted by a variety of adverse factors, including chronic psychological stress, sleep deprivation, oxidative stress, inflammation, aging, and metabolic imbalance. Prolonged exposure to any of these factors can chronically reduce BDNF levels, contributing to numerous disorders whose systemic

BH-CMA: A cross-modal attention network based on brain-heart collaboration for stress cognitive state decoding.

Accurate recognition of stress states under different cognitive loads is important for adaptive human computer interaction and physiological stress monitoring. However, unimodal measurements provide incomplete central or autonomic information, while indiscriminate multimodal fusion may obscure the distinct temporal and spatial organization of electroencephalography (EEG) and heart rate variability (HRV). This study proposes BH-CMA, a compact cross-modal attention network based on brain-heart collaboration for stress cognitive state decoding. Modality-specific encoders preserve the frequency, t
