Hepatic encephalopathy.

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) represents a continuum of transient and reversible neurologic and psychiatric dysfunction. It is a reversible state of impaired cognitive function or altered consciousness in patients with liver disease or portosystemic shunting. Over the last several years, high-quality studies have been conducted on various pharmacologic therapies for HE; as more data emerge, it is hoped that HE will become a more easily treated complication of decompensated liver disease. In the interim, it is important that physicians continue to screen for minimal HE and treat patients early in

Intestinal microflora and oral bacteriotherapy in irritable bowel syndrome.

On the basis of many clinical and experimental observations, it would appear feasible to hold that the characteristics of the luminal milieu, the relationship, the balance between luminal prokaryotic cells and mucosal eukaryotic cells and the consequent immunological and humoral local and systemic responses take part in the pathophysiology of several diseases and, consequently bacteriotherapy can play a relevant role in the treatment and prevention of irritable bowel syndrome and more in general, of the intestinal functional disorders. The irritable bowel syndrome is characterised by sudden an

Gut microbiomes and treatment-resistant ulcerative colitis: a case-control study using qPCR.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome has been identified as a pivotal factor in ulcerative colitis (UC), given its role as the main reservoir of microbes in the body. This community of microorganisms, present in variable concentrations in the digestive tract, makes a wide range of beneficial roles for the host. However, the role of the gut microbiome in patients with refractory UC is still significant, so this study aimed to further investigate the role of these bacteria in patients with refractory UC. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted on stool samples from four distinct groups: the fi

Biotechnological Approaches to Biofilm-Targeted Antifungal Therapy in Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis.

Recurrent Vulvovaginal Candidiasis (RVVC) is increasing worldwide, with biofilm persistence and antifungal resistance limiting treatment options. The combined use of antifungal treatments with antibiofilm agents has become a promising strategy. This review explores advanced therapeutic approaches, their limitations, and prospects. Overgrowth of vaginal Candida inflames the mucosa, causing itching, dryness, and whitish discharge. Biofilm formation worsens the condition, contributing to treatment failure, resistance, and recurrence. Conventional antifungal modalities are often inadequate against

Nutritional Innovations in Functional Foods: Exploring Postbiotics for Gut and Vascular Health Enhancement.

The exploration of microbiome-targeted interventions in functional foods has accelerated, with postbiotics emerging as a compelling alternative to probiotics. Defined as non-viable microbial cells or their metabolic products, postbiotics demonstrate diverse bioactivities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. These attributes enable modulation of the gut-vascular axis, a critical interface influencing systemic inflammation and cardiovascular risk. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), bioactive peptides, and microbial enzymes are among the most studied postbiotics

Deoxynivalenol-induced cellular signal transduction: research progress on toxicological effects, molecular mechanisms, and biological intervention strategies.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is an important mycotoxin that contaminates cereal grains and poses serious threats to livestock and poultry production and human health. This review systematically summarizes the cytotoxicity of DON in the intestinal, immune, nervous, and reproductive systems. Particular emphasis is placed on the mechanism in which the direct ribotoxic stress response (direct RSR) acts as the initial trigger, followed by an imbalance in signaling networks and secondary amplification of ROS and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Through crosstalk among the MAPK, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, NF-κB, JAK2/

Faecal microbiota transplantation and glucolipid metabolic disorders: the interventional role of gut microbiota.

Glucolipid metabolic disorders (GLMD) have emerged as a significant global public health issue, posing a significant threat to human health. With changes in modern social structures and an ageing population, the incidence of GLMD is on the rise and is increasingly affecting younger populations. Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) directly modifies the gut microbiota to reestablish its equilibrium and metabolites, consequently reinstating gut barrier integrity, mitigating chronic low-grade inflammation, and affecting the onset and progression of GLMD through the regulation of the gut-liver

Crosstalk Between Parkinson's Disease and Colorectal Cancer: Genetic Mechanisms, Gut Microbiota, and Therapeutic Insights.

This review summarizes the potential genes involved in both Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis and colorectal cancer (CRC) carcinogenesis, focusing on the oncogenic mechanisms that may arise from PD gene dysfunctions. By investigating genes such as PRKN, PINK1, and DJ-1, which influence pathways primarily related to oxidative stress, mitophagy, cell cycle regulation, and inflammation, this review provides insight into how PD genes may contribute to CRC tumorigenesis through interactions with gut microbes such as Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium butyricum. This review highlights a mechanist

The intratumoral microbiome in colorectal cancer: origins, microenvironmental interactions, and new horizons in precision medicine.

As a key functional component of the tumor microenvironment (TME), the intratumoral microbiome in colorectal cancer (CRC) has revolutionized the traditional paradigm of the "sterile tumor." Far from being mere "bystanders," these intratumoral microbes act as key drivers deeply implicated in remodeling the TME, influencing tumor progression, and determining therapeutic responses, thus necessitating a comprehensive synthesis of their complex biological characteristics and potential for clinical translation. Therefore, this review systematically summarizes the potential origins, community charact

Gut microbiota-mediated metabolic dysregulation in type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome: emerging therapeutic targets beyond glycaemic control.

Metabolic diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity, have been traditionally understood through glucose-centric models. However, hyperglycaemia is a downstream consequence of systemic immune-metabolic dysregulation, with the gut microbiota acting as a central upstream regulator through defined molecular signalling pathways. This review examines four principal microbiota-host signalling axes through which ecological disruption drives systemic metabolic disease: short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) depletion impairing free fatty acid receptor (FFAR2/FFAR3) and AMP-activated pro
