Eating disorders in Latino boys and young men: the role of sociocultural context in identification, assessment, and treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Existing research on eating disorders has predominantly centered on affluent, young White cisgender women, limiting providers' understanding of how sociocultural context influences the identification, assessment, and treatment of eating disorders among racial and ethnic minorities. Latino boys and young men remain a particularly understudied group in eating disorder studies, despite growing recognition of the prevalence of eating disorders within Latino populations. This review integrates a synthesis of current literature, epidemiological data, and multidisciplinary perspect

Addressing the Triple Trauma of Factors Leading to Perinatal Health and Mental Health Consequences in Two Upstate New York Communities.

This article focuses on the impact of trauma experienced by individuals, families and groups, and neighborhoods in Rochester and Syracuse, New York. Using the levels of analysis put forward in Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory (i.e., individual, family, and community), we argue that trauma operates at each of those levels. This mixed-methods study reviews the findings of seven previously published studies (with data collection ranging from 2000 to 2019), each of which addresses trauma among low-income residents. Specific methods include secondary analyses of births, qualitative interv

Self-Esteem Among U.S. African American and Latinx Adolescents With Depressive Symptoms and Overweight and/or Obesity.

PURPOSE: To examine the concept of self-esteem among African American and Latinx adolescents with overweight and/or obesity and depressive symptoms in the United States. METHOD: Using key terms in CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO databases, an initial search yielded 371 articles; after examining title, abstract, and full text, 33 articles remained. The concept of adolescent self-esteem was analyzed using Rodger's evolutionary method. RESULTS: Several antecedents of self-esteem in this context were identified, including bullying, negative portrayal in the media, stressors and hassles, low socioec

Determinants of Hospital Use and Physician Services Among Adults With a History of Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness have diverse patterns of healthcare use. This study examined the distribution and determinants of healthcare encounters among adults with a history of homelessness. METHODS: Administrative healthcare records were linked with survey data for a general cohort of adults with a history of homelessness and a cohort of homeless adults with mental illness. Binary and count models were used to identify factors associated with hospital admissions, emergency department visits and physician visits for comparison across the 2 cohorts. RESULTS: During the 1-ye

Incidence of Acute Post-Streptococcal Glomerulonephritis in Hawai'i and Factors Affecting Length of Hospitalization.

Acute post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis (APSGN) is a disorder of inflammation in the glomeruli and vasculature of the kidneys that is caused by immune-complex formation after Streptococcus pyogenes infection. Most patients with APSGN present with macroscopic hematuria, edema, and hypertension, however presentation can vary from no symptoms to severe proteinuria, or even acute renal failure. This study sought to estimate the incidence of APSGN among children in Hawai'i, to identify populations at increased risk for APSGN, and to recognize risk factors correlated with the length of hospitali

Breed-specific variations in the coding region of toll-like receptor 4 in the domestic cat.

Specific point mutations in the human toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) confer altered risk for diverse diseases including sepsis, aspergillosis and inflammatory bowel disease. Some of these TLR4 polymorphisms are racially specific. We hypothesised that feline TLR4 polymorphisms might underlie an observed increased risk to infectious and inflammatory diseases in some cat breeds. The aim of this study was to identify breed-specific variations in the coding region of feline TLR4 and to model the effect of mutations on protein structure and function in silico. The entire coding region of TLR4 was seque

African American Women: Surviving Breast Cancer Mortality against the Highest Odds.

Among the country's 25 largest cities, the breast cancer mortality disparity is highest in Memphis, Tennessee, where African American women are twice as likely to die from breast cancer as White women. This qualitative study of African-American breast cancer survivors explores experiences during and post treatment that contributed to their beating the high odds of mortality. Using a semi-structured interview guide, a focus group session was held in 2012 with 10 breast cancer survivors. Thematic analysis and a deductive a priori template of codes were used to analyze the data. Five main themes

The Driving Behavior Survey as a measure of behavioral stress responses to MVA-related PTSD.

Numerous treatments are available that address the core symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there are a number of related behavioral stress responses that are not assessed with PTSD measures, yet these behavioral stress responses affect quality of life. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether a recently developed measure of behavioral stress response, the Driving Behavior Survey (DBS), was sensitive to change associated with treatment among a group of participants diagnosed with PTSD. The DBS indexes anxious driving behavior, which is frequently observed

The social determinants of depression in elderly Korean immigrants in Canada: does acculturation matter?

Depression in old age significantly decreases the quality of life and may lead to serious consequences, such as suicide. Existing literature indicates that elderly Korean immigrants may experience higher levels of depression than other racial ethnic group elders. The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate factors that influence depression among older Korean immigrants in Toronto. A total of 148 participants, ages 60 years or older (mean age = 74.01, SD = 8.24), completed face-to-face interviews in Korean language. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted by adding variable

Planar cell polarity pathway genes and risk for spina bifida.

Spina bifida, a neural tube closure defect (NTD) involving the posterior portion of what will ultimately give rise to the spinal cord, is one of the most common and serious birth defects. The etiology of spina bifida is thought to be multi-factorial and involve multiple interacting genes and environmental factors. The causes of this congenital malformation remain largely unknown. However, several candidate genes for spina bifida have been identified in lower vertebrates, including the planar cell polarity (PCP) genes. We used data from a case-control study conducted in California to evaluate t

Prevention with HIV-seropositive men who have sex with men: lessons from the Seropositive Urban Men's Study (SUMS) and the Seropositive Urban Men's Intervention Trial (SUMIT).

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV, and HIV-seropositive (HIV-positive) MSM are an especially important group for prevention efforts. This article describes findings from the Seropositive Urban Men's Study (SUMS, N = 456) and the Seropositive Urban Men's Intervention Trial (SUMIT, N = 1168). These studies were conducted from 1996 to 2002 with racially diverse samples from New York and San Francisco. Patterns of sexual behavior often reflected an understanding of the relative risks of specific sexual practices and were generally consistent with harm reduction

Marginal ulcer rates in primary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus conversion of sleeve gastrectomy to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

BACKGROUND: Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are well-established surgical interventions for morbid obesity, offering significant weight loss and improvement or resolution of many obesity-related comorbidities. Some patients who initially undergo SG later elect to convert to RYGB due to inadequate weight loss. Marginal ulcers (MUs), characterized by ulceration at the gastrojejunal anastomosis, are a known and prevalent complication following RYGB. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at a single community hospital. Records were reviewed to identify patien
