[Hyperventilation and inhibitory synapses].

Injection of subconvulsive doses of strychnine blocking the inhibitory synapses significantly increases the reflex activity of the respiratory muscle evoked by stimulation of the sciatic nerve as well as by inhalation of hypercapnic gas mixture. Thus the inhibitory synapses prevent the extreme hypocapnia evoked by hyperventilation.

Skin Hyperpigmentation as Initial Manifestation of Vitamin B12 Deficiency: A Case of Delayed Diagnosis With Late-Onset Subacute Combined Degeneration of the Cord.

Vitamin B12 deficiency may present with a myriad of symptoms. Rarely, skin hyperpigmentation may be the sole initial manifestation of this micronutrient deficiency, which can easily be overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis. This case report describes a 32-year-old Ghanaian male who presented with a 4-year history of progressive darkening of the dorsal aspects of the interphalangeal joints of both hands, the palms, and soles of the feet, for which he did not seek immediate medical attention. He later developed a worsening unsteady gait. Neurological assessment revealed mild weakness in both

Spinal excitability following sensory electrical stimulation of the upper limb.

The purpose of the study was to determine if sensory electrical stimulation (SES), below motor threshold, would reduce spinal excitability via reciprocal inhibition (RI) and determine if any changes were sex-related. Eighteen healthy participants (11 males and 7 females) participated in a pre-post comparison study. The Hoffmann (H-) reflex was elicited to assess the spinal excitability of Flexor Carpi Radialis (FCR) and the influence of RI from Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus (ECRL) on FCR using a paired conditioning pulse paradigm. A 15-min bout of SES (4 pulse bursts at 100 Hz) was applied to

Placental and other risk factors related to the survival and development of neonates from birth up to 10 days of life in bitches.

Although the association of several neonatal risk factors has been described previously, the relationship between placental alterations and neonatal viability, vitality scores, growth, and development in canines remains unexplored. This research aimed to study placental and other risk factors related to the survival and growth of neonates from birth up to 10 days of life in bitches. A cohort of 27 bitches, 93 neonates, and 53 placentas was included. Weight, macroscopic and microscopic lesions, and vascular density were evaluated in the placentas, while mortality, viability, APGAR, reflexes, an

Cervical percutaneous interferential current stimulation improves citric acid cough tests in patients with Parkinson's disease on medication.

Aspiration pneumonia is the leading cause of death in patients with Parkinson's disease. The incidence of silent aspiration is high in such patients owing to decreased pharyngeal and laryngeal sensation; thus, interventions for this condition may help prevent pneumonia. In this single-arm, open-label study, we used a cervical percutaneous interferential current stimulation device to activate pharyngeal and laryngeal sensory nerves. We evaluated its effectiveness in patients with Hoehn-Yahr stages 2-4 Parkinson's disease. The primary endpoint was the proportion of patients with a normal cough r

Electrophysiological markers of vestibular-mediated self-motion perception - A pilot study.

Peripheral vestibular activation results in multi-level responses, from brainstem-mediated reflexes (e.g. vestibular ocular reflex - VOR) to perception of self-motion. While VOR responses indicate preserved vestibular peripheral and brainstem functioning, there are no automated measures of vestibular perception of self-motion - important since some patients with brain disconnection syndromes manifest a vestibular agnosia (intact VOR but impaired self-motion perception). Electroencephalography ('EEG') - may provide a surrogate marker of vestibular perception of self-motion. A related objective

A Severe Baclofen Intoxication Mimicking Post-Hypoxic Encephalopathy: Wait and See!

BACKGROUND: A severe baclofen intoxication is a potentially life-threatening condition. It is associated with coma and can cause brainstem reflexes to disappear, simulating a brain death-like condition. When given intensive supportive care and time, patients can recover without residual neurological damage. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a patient with known spastic cerebral palsy who was found unresponsive with no signs of breathing. He was brought to the Emergency Department, intubated, put on the ventilator, and hemodynamically stabilized. Brainstem reflexes were absent and he appeared

Photopic light-mediated down-regulation of local α1A-adrenergic signaling protects blood-retina barrier in experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis.

We have reported the gateway reflex, which describes specific neural activations that regulate immune cell gateways at specific blood vessels in the central nervous system (CNS). Four types of gateway reflexes exist, all of which induce alterations in endothelial cells at specific vessels of the blood-brain barrier followed by inflammation in the CNS in the presence of CNS-autoreactive T cells. Here we report a new gateway reflex that suppresses the development of retinal inflammation by using an autoreactive T cell-mediated ocular inflammation model. Exposure to photopic light down-regulated

"What a Girl Wants": What Can We Learn From Animal Models of Female Sexual Motivation?

Sexual motivation is notably different than other motivations such as hunger and thirst, because it lacks homeostatic drive. Sexual motivation poses no threat to physical well-being; individual survival is not at stake. Nevertheless, sexual motivation is a powerful drive and is critical for species survival. Understanding the complexity of sexual motivation has the potential to advance our understanding of other motivations, even pathological motivations, such as those associated with substance abuse. The study of motivation that is unique to females has often been neglected. A number of parad

Integrated cardiovascular/respiratory control in type 1 diabetes evidences functional imbalance: Possible role of hypoxia.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular (baroreflex) and respiratory (chemoreflex) control mechanisms were studied separately in diabetes, but their reciprocal interaction (well known for diseases like heart failure) had never been comprehensively assessed. We hypothesized that prevalent autonomic neuropathy would depress both reflexes, whereas prevalent autonomic imbalance through sympathetic activation would depress the baroreflex but enhance the chemoreflexes. METHODS: In 46 type-1 diabetic subjects (7.0±0.9year duration) and 103 age-matched controls we measured the baroreflex (average of 7 methods), a

Neurologic Prognostication: Neurologic Examination and Current Guidelines.

Clinical examination is paramount for prognostication in patients who are comatose after resuscitation from cardiac arrest. At 72 hours from recovery of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), an absent or extensor motor response to pain (M ≤ 2) is a very sensitive, but not specific predictor of poor neurologic outcome. Bilaterally absent pupillary or corneal reflexes are less sensitive, but highly specific predictors. Besides the clinical examination, investigations such as somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs), electroencephalography (EEG), blood levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), or imaging

[The application of the physical factors for the medical rehabilitation of the children presenting with neurogenic dysfunction of the bladder].

This article describes the modern technologies for the medical rehabilitation of the children presenting with neurogenic dysfunction of the bladder aimed at improving the act of urination at all levels of innervation. The most frequent variant of neurogenic dysfunction of the bladder in the children is the hyper-reflexive one; it is this variant in which the most pronounced disorders of urodynamics due to intravesical hypertension and detrusor hypoxia are observed. The urodynamic disorders are known to contribute to the formation of the characteristic clinical picture associated with the hyper

Increased α1-adrenoreceptor activity is required to sustain blood pressure in female rats under food restriction.

AIMS: We evaluated the effect of food restriction (FR) on the various reflexes involved in short term cardiovascular regulation; we also evaluated the contribution of the sympathetic nervous systemand of the plasmatic nitric oxide (NO) in the development of the counterregulatory cardiovascular changes triggered by FR. MAIN METHODS: Female rats were subjected to FR for 14 days, and after this period biochemical measurements of biochemical parameters were performed. For physiological tests, animals were anaesthetised, and a catheter was inserted into the femoral artery and vein for the acquisit

Impact of Bioelectronic Medicine on the Neural Regulation of Pelvic Visceral Function.

Neuromodulation elicited by electrical stimulation of peripheral or spinal nerves is a U.S. Food and Drug Administered (FDA)-approved therapy for treating disorders of the pelvic viscera, including urinary urgency, urgency-frequency, nonobstructive urinary retention and fecal incontinence. The technique is also being tested experimentally for its efficacy in treating interstitial cystitis, chronic constipation and pelvic pain. The goal of neuromodulation is to suppress abnormal visceral sensations and involuntary reflexes and restore voluntary control. Although detailed mechanisms underlying t

What is the role of the medial olivocochlear system in speech-in-noise processing?

The medial olivocochlear (MOC) bundle reduces the gain of the cochlear amplifier through reflexive activation by sound. Physiological results indicate that MOC-induced reduction in cochlear gain can enhance the response to signals when presented in masking noise. Some previous studies suggest that this "antimasking" effect of the MOC system plays a role in speech-in-noise perception. The present study set out to reinvestigate this hypothesis by correlating measures of MOC activity and speech-in-noise processing across a group of normal-hearing participants. MOC activity was measured using cont
