Assessment of adverse childhood experiences in adolescents from a rural agricultural community: Associations with depressive symptoms and psychosocial problems.

The main goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among Latino adolescents from an agricultural community and to examine how it may impact their neuropsychiatric functioning. This research particularly assessed the association between ACEs and depression, as well as ACEs and psychosocial problems. The study sample consisted of 852 adolescents treated at a rural primary care clinic with a comprehensive ACE screening protocol that assesses for ACEs, depressed mood, and psychosocial functioning during every annual Well-Child Visit. Study results s

Effects of lorazepam on saccadic eye movements - evidence from prosaccade and free viewing tasks.

RATIONALE: Peak velocities of saccadic eye movements are reduced after benzodiazepine administration. Even though this is an established effect, past research has only examined it in horizontal prosaccade tasks. OBJECTIVES: The spectrum of saccadic eye movements, however, is much larger. Therefore, we aimed to make a first attempt at filling this research gap by testing benzodiazepine effects on saccades under different experimental task conditions. METHODS: 1 mg lorazepam or placebo was administered (within-subjects, double-blind, in randomised order) to n = 30 healthy adults. Participants

Neuropsychiatric Symptoms and Commonly Used Biomarkers of Alzheimer's Disease: A Literature Review from a Machine Learning Perspective.

There is a growing interest in the application of machine learning (ML) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research. However, neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), frequent in subjects with AD, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and other related dementias have not been analyzed sufficiently using ML methods. To portray the landscape and potential of ML research in AD and NPS studies, we present a comprehensive literature review of existing ML approaches and commonly studied AD biomarkers. We conducted PubMed searches with keywords related to NPS, AD biomarkers, machine learning, and cognition. We included

Obesity: A Doorway to a Molecular Path Leading to Infertility.

The dramatic rise in obesity has recently made it a global health issue. About 1.9 billion were overweight, and 650 million global populations were obese in 2016. Obese women suffer longer conception time, lowered fertility rates, and greater rates of miscarriage. Obesity alters hormones such as adiponectin and leptin, affecting all levels within the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) are inflammatory cytokines that may play an important role in the pathophysiology of ovarian dysfunction in obesity. In obese ma

First-in-human assessment of safety and immunogenicity of low and high doses of Plasmodium falciparum malaria protein 013 (FMP013) administered intramuscularly with ALFQ adjuvant in healthy malaria-naïve adults.

The global burden of malaria remains substantial. Circumsporozoite protein (CSP) has been demonstrated to be an effective target antigen, however, improvements that offer more efficacious and more durable protection are still needed. In support of research and development of next-generation malaria vaccines, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) has developed a CSP-based antigen (FMP013) and a novel adjuvant ALFQ (Army Liposome Formulation containing QS-21). We present a single center, open-label, dose-escalation Phase 1 clinical trial to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of the

"It Has Made Me Think": Engaging the Public with the History of Health in the Modern Irish Prison.

Since the establishment of the modern prison system in the early nineteenth century, prisons and prisoners have been construed as sites of moral, social, and biological contagion. Historic and contemporary studies show that most prisoners experience severe health inequalities, higher rates of addiction and mental health issues, and lower life expectancy than the rest of the population. They also come from deprived social strata. Yet, these aspects of Irish penal history have been largely neglected in academia and popular histories. Our article discusses two public history projects-an art insta

MicroRNAs as the promising markers of comorbidities in childhood obesity-A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Rising child obesity rate creates a need for tools quantifying changes in children suffering from obesity, for purposes of detection or prevention of comorbidities. A candidate for such a role seems to be microRNAs, which in vivo serve as the suppressing factors in gene expression. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed at reviewing recent discoveries in this field and concluding directions of research or application of studied molecules. METHODS: Repeated browsing of databases and screening of results, led to final approval of 16 articles. Filtered studies examined differences in microR

Cocaine and depressive disorders: When standard clinical diagnosis is insufficient.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine use is a growing global health problem and patients with cocaine use disorders (CUD) present several complications, including high rates of major depression. These subjects present two types of major depressive disorder (MDD): primary major depressive disorder (P-MDD) and cocaine-induced major depressive disorder (CI-MDD). To improve treatment, it is necessary to distinguish between both types. The aim of this study was to assess the differences in depressive symptomatology criteria (P-MDD vs CI-MDD) in CUD patients. METHODS: Secondary data analysis was carried out with a

Racial and Ethnic Differences in Treatment and Outcomes of Severe Aortic Stenosis: A Review.

Aortic stenosis (AS) is among the most common valvular heart diseases encountered in the United States. In this review the authors examine differences between racial and ethnic groups in the epidemiology and management of severe AS, explore potential explanations for these findings, and discuss the implications for improving the delivery of care to racially and ethnically diverse populations. Underrepresented racial and ethnic groups experience a paradoxically lower prevalence or incidence of AS relative to white subjects, despite having a higher prevalence of traditional risk factors. Antitumorigenic action of nelfinavir: Effects on multiple myeloma and hematologic malignancies (Review).

Protease inhibitors (PIs) inhibit HIV‑1 and HIV‑2 proteases, impeding virus replication and liberation of viral elements from infected cells. In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) subjects receiving PI‑based treatment, an impressive decrease in the amount of HIV‑associated cancers, unconnected to viral burden or CD4 amount was observed. Research has reported that PIs have influence on cancer proliferation, spread, and survival as an effect on endoplasmic reticulum stress, proteasome, NF‑κB and Akt signalling. Nelfinavir (NFV) is a nonpeptidic PI that functions by connecting to the catalytic si
