Salmonella Typhi: A Review of Antibiogram Journey in Developing Countries.

Typhoid fever poses a significant health challenge in low- and middleincome countries (LMiCs), impacting millions of individuals across various age groups. Its prevalence is particularly pronounced in South Asia. Factors contributing to its transmission in South Asia include rapid unplanned urbanization, urban-rural disparities, provision of poor water and sanitation facilities, and open defecation. The mortality rate of typhoid fever is up to 1%, and those who survive have a protracted period of poor health and carry an enormous financial burden. The treatment is further complicated by the em

Can Thailand achieve COVID-19 herd immunity?

The COVID-19 outbreak has had a great impact on the social, economic, and health systems of Thailand. A variety of measures to curb the spread of the disease were implemented since the beginning of the pandemic, including a strict national lockdown protocol. The Thai government aimed to achieve herd immunity through an efficient vaccination programme. Initially, vaccine supply shortage and a lack of vaccine options plagued the health system, but this has since been improved. Continuous monitoring of the situation through research is being carried out to assess the level of immunity among the p

Determining the acceptability of a novel One Health vaccine for Rift Valley Fever prior to phase II/III clinical trials in Uganda.

Several vaccine candidates for Rift Valley Fever (RVF) are in development for use in humans. A promising candidate, ChAdOx1 RVF vaccine, has been developed for use in both humans and animals, and has undergone field trials in livestock in Kenya. We conducted a qualitative study to explore the acceptability of this novel One Health vaccine for Rift Valley Fever prior to phase II/III trials, in two rural Ugandan cohorts between January to June 2020. Data was obtained from 96 semi-structured interviews at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) and Kyamulibwa, Kalungu District, in Southern Ugand

A Review of Disparities in Cardiac Rehabilitation: EVIDENCE, DRIVERS, AND SOLUTIONS.

PURPOSE: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) has been shown to improve functional status, quality of life, and recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. Despite its demonstrated compelling benefits and guideline recommendation, CR is underutilized, and there are significant disparities in CR utilization particularly by race, ethnicity, sex, and socioeconomic status. The purpose of this review is to summarize the evidence and drivers of these disparities and recommend potential solutions. METHODS: In this review, key studies documenting disparities in CR referrals, enrollment, and completion are

Policy Perspectives of Dog-Mediated Rabies Control in Resource-Limited Countries: The Ethiopian Situation.

One Health disease-control programs are believed to be most effective when implemented within the population transmitting the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners have targeted the elimination of dog-mediated human rabies by 2030 primarily through mass dog vaccination. Mass vaccination, however, has been constrained by financial resource limitations. The current owner-charged dog vaccination strategy, used in most resource-limited countries like Ethiopia, has not reached the minimum coverage required to build population immunity. Dog vaccination is non-existing in most rur

Maternal morbidity in rural upper Egypt: levels, determinants, and care seeking.

Although maternal morbidity constitutes a serious public health problem in Egypt, it has remained a neglected area for public health research. In this study we used a synthetic design combining quantitative and qualitative methods to determine the level of maternal morbidity as reported by mothers in rural Upper Egypt and to identify patterns and determinants of care seeking for perceived morbidity in pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. The reported incidence of danger symptoms indicated that maternal morbidity is a serious problem in Egypt and, therefore, warranted community-bas

The relationship between antenatal risk characteristics, place of delivery and adverse delivery outcome in rural Malawi.

OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare the frequency of antenatally identified maternal 'risk' characteristics, place of delivery and occurrence of delivery complications. METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 780 pregnant women completing antenatal follow-up at a rural health center in Malawi. RESULTS: Three-quarters of the subjects had at least one commonly accepted risk characteristic. Only 30% of these women, and 22% of those with no risk characteristics, delivered in a modern health facility. Four women died, 127 experienced other delivery complications and there were 52 perinatal deaths.

Developing strategies to control schistosomiasis morbidity in nonenrolled school-age children: experience from Egypt.

Schistosomiasis is a major health problem in school-age children in much of the tropical world. They harbour the most intense infections for both Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium. In Egypt, the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP) has implemented a successful school-based treatment programme in which children are screened and those found to be infected treated with praziquantel. High nonenrolment rates in some rural areas have a negative impact on the coverage of this programme and on its ability to reduce transmission in the community. The main aim of our study was to introduce and

Accuracy of vision technicians in screening ocular pathology at rural vision centres of southern India.

BACKGROUND: There is paucity of data on the inter-observer agreement and diagnostic accuracy between a primary-care technician (vision technician) and an ophthalmologist. Hence, the current study was conducted to assess the accuracy of vision technicians, to screen potentially sight-threatening ocular conditions at rural vision centres of southern India and their agreement with an ophthalmologist. METHODS: In July to August 2010, patients presenting to seven vision centres in Adilabad district (Andhra Pradesh) were selected and screened in a masked manner by seven vision technicians followed

Factors Associated with Non-Participation and Non-Adherence in Directly Observed Mass Drug Administration for Malaria in The Gambia.

INTRODUCTION: The potential benefits of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) for malaria elimination are being considered in several malaria endemic countries where a decline in malaria transmission has been reported. For this strategy to work, it is important that a large proportion of the target population participates, requiring an in-depth understanding of factors that may affect participation and adherence to MDA programs. METHODOLOGY: This social science study was ancillary to a one-round directly observed MDA campaign with dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, carried out in 12 villages in rural G

Anaesthesia in rural Queensland: clinical experience with the Flying Obstetric and Gynaecology Service.

The Flying Obstetric and Gynaecology (FOG) service visits 27 outback towns scattered over approximately one million square kilometers of western Queensland. The role and workload of an anaesthetist attached to the FOG Service and a prospective audit of 760 consecutive anaesthetics over a ten-month period are reported. Flying anaesthetists are in an ideal position to review standards of equipment, staffing levels, anaesthetic assistance in theatre as well as participate in both medical and nursing rural training programs. This ensures that deficiencies in anaesthetic related areas are identifie

Diagnosing Syndrome-Like Microangiopathic Hemolytic Anemia After Pit Viper Envenomation: Overcoming Laboratory Gaps in a Resource-Limited Setting: A Case Report From Nepal.

Snakebite envenomation remains a significant yet often overlooked health challenge in Nepal, particularly in its rural and hilly regions. While venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) is commonly observed with viper bites, microangiopathic hemolytic anemia (MAHA) is an extremely rare complication, especially with green pit vipers (Trimeresurus spp.). MAHA is often underdiagnosed in low-resource settings due to the absence of definitive laboratory diagnostics. We report a case of a 47-year-old woman from rural Nepal who was bitten by a presumed green pit viper (Trimeresurus spp.). She dev
