In an abattoir study, 514 camels, slaughtered for meat production in different areas of northern Libya were examined for the presence of cystic echinococcosis (CE). In addition, 367 sheep and 184 goats were examined. The overall prevalence of infection with CE was 48% in camels, 15.8% in sheep and 3.8% in goats. The diversity and importance of Echinococcus species in domesticated animals in Saudi Arabia are poorly understood. In this study, 108 singular (hydatid) cysts were collected from goats (n = 25), sheep (n = 56) and camels (n = 27). Serum samples from 528 aborted ewes from different sheep flocks in Kuwait were tested for Toxoplasma gondii. The indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT) was used with a titer of 1:80 considered positive. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in 94 (17.8%). Rift Valley fever (RVF), which was enzootic in Sudan in 1976 and epidemic in Egypt in 1977-78, may have been introduced into Egypt from Sudan via sheep transported along Lake Nasser.
