Repeated exposure to novelty promotes resilience against the amyloid-beta effect through dopaminergic stimulation.

RATIONALE: The accumulation of beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ) in the forebrain leads to cognitive dysfunction and neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease. Studies have shown that individuals with a consistently cognitively active lifestyle are less vulnerable to Aβ toxicity. Recent research has demonstrated that intrahippocampal Aβ can impact catecholaminergic release and spatial memory. Interestingly, exposure to novelty stimuli has been found to stimulate the release of catecholamines in the hippocampus. However, it remains uncertain whether repeated enhancing catecholamine activity can effectiv

Childhood maltreatment, social connectedness, and depression: A prospective analysis of trajectories over time.

Childhood maltreatment is associated with a range of negative social and psychological outcomes at different developmental stages. Using data from a prospective longitudinal study of the consequences of childhood maltreatment, we examine whether childhood maltreatment predicts lower levels of social connectedness and more depression symptoms over a 30-year time period and examine the directionality of the trajectories from childhood into middle adulthood. Children (ages 0-11 years) with documented histories of maltreatment and demographically matched controls were followed into adulthood acros

The Paradox of Interactive Media: The Potential for Video Games and Virtual Reality as Tools for Violence Prevention.

Interactive media such as video games and virtual reality (VR) provide users with lived experiences that may be dangerous or even impossible in daily life. By providing interactive experiences in highly authentic, detail-rich contexts, these technologies have demonstrated measurable success in impacting how people think, feel, and behave in the physical world. At the same time, violent interactive media content has been historically connected with a range of antisocial effects in both popular press and academic research. Extant literature has established a small-but-statistically significant e

Platform shift in mental health support among undergraduates: from campus counselors to GenAI-based consultation.

China is advancing the implementation of the "AI+" initiative and exploring the promotion of AI technology in scenarios such as health management and assisted diagnosis. Against this backdrop, universities are accelerating the adoption of GenAI virtual counseling tools to address the growing psychological issues among undergraduates, including depression, anxiety, and academic stress. However, research on why students are shifting from traditional in-person psychological consultations to GenAI consultations remains limited. Therefore, this study focuses on the student population, collecting da

A Social Media Intervention to Increase Caregiver Knowledge of Early Infant Communication: Multiple Methods Intervention Development and Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Greater caregiver knowledge of early language development may support more reciprocal interactions with infants and improved child language outcomes. Short-form video interventions on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok could be a scalable, cost-effective way to increase caregiver knowledge. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this investigation is to describe the development and testing of a version of the BabyTok Project, a social media-based intervention for caregivers of very young infants under 3 months of age. METHODS: We used a multiple-method, pre-post quasi-experime

Neural correlates of language disfunction in psychiatric disorders: a developmental perspective.

Language forms the foundation of social interactions, allowing us to connect with family and peers. Through speech, we express our thoughts and emotions to others. Experiencing challenges in speech and language functions during development can therefore significantly affect social relationships, cognitive and affective development. In child and adolescence psychiatry, clinicians have observed that speech and language abilities may be altered in various mental (behavioral/developmental) disorders (psychiatric disorders). This review provides an overview of systematic and original investigations

Improving Children's Social Skills With Virtual Reality: A Tailored Single-Session Training in Special Education.

This within-child study examined whether a tailored, single-session virtual reality (VR) training can enhance social skills among children enrolled in special education programs for behavior problems. Forty-nine children (ages 7-13; 85.7% boys; 57.1% ASD, 20.4% ADHD) completed one 20-min VR session. For each child, teachers selected one skill for children to practice with: staying calm (anger regulation), asking to join a group (peer entry), or saying no (assertiveness). Relative to baseline, in-VR observations showed substantial immediate improvements of the targeted skill (η2p = .35), but te

Sexual conflict and sexual pleiotropy.

Natural selection might favour brightly coloured males and drab females. A male and a female might disagree about whether to mate. Such tensions are often described as 'sexual conflict' of two forms: intralocus and interlocus. However, this framing unites two very different evolutionary processes: genetic constraint and social conflict, in which male and female fitness are linked by shared genetics or by shared social interactions, respectively. We suggest that coupling both under the banner of 'sexual conflict' is not justified and impedes progress. This problem has become acute as researcher

A mathematical model of diabetes dynamics in pregnancy.

Diabetes Mellitus is a major metabolic disorder affecting over 800 million people worldwide, with significant health risks including cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, and neuropathy. Among women, diabetes during pregnancy - both pre-existing and gestational - poses severe complications for maternal and fetal health. This study develops a comprehensive mathematical model capturing the dynamics of diabetes among women, emphasizing pregnancy-associated transitions. The total female population is divided into fertile and non-fertile groups, each further subdivided into eleven compartments r

The Impact of Avatar Retargeting on Pointing and Conversational Communication.

One of the pleasures of interacting using avatars in VR is being able to play a character very different to yourself. As the scale of characters change relative to a user, there is a need to retarget user motions onto the character, generally maintaining either the user's pose or the position of their wrists and ankles. This retargeting can impact both the functional and social information conveyed by the avatar. Focused on 3rd-person (observed) avatars, this paper presents three studies on these varied aspects of communication. It establishes a baseline for near-field avatar pointing, showing

How Spiteful Are We? Validation of the Spitefulness Scale in Spaniards.

Spitefulness has been defined as the willingness to cause some kind of harm to other people, even if this action does not bring any benefit and causes harm to herself. Given its relationship with a multitude of antisocial behaviors, interest in studying this trait has been growing and it was in 2014 when the first scale to measure it was validated: the Spitefulness Scale. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of its Spanish version. In a sample of 758 participants (M = 31.44; SD = 12.91; 72.80% female), the Spitefulness Scale, the Short Dark Triad, the Assessment of Sadistic

Using Chronic Care Management Visits to Reduce the Number of Frequent Emergency Department Visits: A Pilot Study.

Background Emergency department (ED) visits are increasing in number and cost and becoming a major way patients are interacting with the healthcare system. Patients who frequently visit the ED are deemed "super-utilizers" who visit for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to, multiple chronic medical illnesses, homelessness, and substance use disorder, but fail to have an established long-term treatment plan. Methodology We enrolled our hospital's top 50 super-utilizing patients into the Chronic Care Management Program. These patients received monthly telehealth visits to discuss c

Physiotherapy as part of collaborative and person-centered rehabilitation services: the social systems constraining an innovative practice.

BACKGROUND: A person-centered and collaborative practice is considered crucial in contemporary physiotherapy. These ideals are often embraced in theory but are difficult to put into practice. As problems and solutions are related, understanding and refining theory on practical problems can close the knowing-doing gap and link the problem to the development of possible solutions. OBJECTIVE: To explore the challenges with providing physiotherapy as part of collaborative and person-centered rehabilitation services. METHODS: This article reports on an all-day interactive workshop with eight focu

Expression of Transposable Elements in the Brain of the Drosophila melanogaster Model for Fragile X Syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome is a neuro-developmental disease affecting intellectual abilities and social interactions. Drosophila melanogaster represents a consolidated model to study neuronal pathways underlying this syndrome, especially because the model recapitulates complex behavioural phenotypes. Drosophila Fragile X protein, or FMRP, is required for a normal neuronal structure and for correct synaptic differentiation in both the peripheral and central nervous systems, as well as for synaptic connectivity during development of the neuronal circuits. At the molecular level, FMRP has a crucial role
