Female injecting drug users: human immunodeficiency virus risk behavior and intervention needs.

Injecting drug use and heterosexual contact are the major exposure categories for women acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) risk perception, perceived seriousness of HIV, drug use self-efficacy, sexual self-efficacy, and social support for HIV/AIDS risk behavior among female injecting drug users (IDUs). A random sample of 140 female IDUs was interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Self-efficacy for preve

Survival Time Disparities after Palliative Care Use Among Low-Income Patients on Social Welfare Programs: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Relieving the total pain of patients with cancer and supporting their well-being throughout their lives are important roles of palliative and supportive care. Poverty may inhibit patients from receiving dignified end-of-life care; however, using social welfare services may reduce its impact on patients' end-of-life experiences. Nevertheless, no study has investigated which social welfare service could lead to favorable end-of-life experiences for patients living in poverty. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the characteristics of users of palliative care among low-income pat

The feminine ideal and transactional sex: Navigating respectability and risk in Swaziland.

Women who engage in transactional sex are not only at increased risk of HIV and intimate partner violence, but also face social risks including gossip and ostracism. These social and physical risks may be dependent on both what a woman expects and needs from her partner and how her community perceives the relationship. Gender theory suggests that some of these social risks may hinge on whether or not a woman's relationship threatens dominant masculinity. We conducted a qualitative study in Swaziland from September 2013 to October 2014 to explore transactional sex and respectable femininity thr

Differential patterns of postpartum depression following vaginal and caesarean births: The moderating role of emotional support.

BACKGROUND: Peripartum depression significantly impacts maternal well-being and mother-infant outcomes. Mode of birth may influence the risk of peripartum depression; however, evidence for this association remains inconsistent. Moreover, the roles of specific social support dimensions remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine longitudinal changes in depressive symptoms from late pregnancy to 6 months postpartum among primiparous women stratified by mode of birth (vaginal or caesarean), and to evaluate whether emotional, instrumental, and informational support moderate the association between mode

ENGAGE-TBI: adaptation of a community-based intervention to improve social participation after brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is prevalent after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and has negative implications for health and well-being. Interventions targeting social participation show promise for reducing social isolation. We adapted a social participation intervention, ENGAGE, to meet the needs of people with TBI. ENGAGE relies on social learning and guided problem-solving to achieve social participation goals. METHODS: This study was conducted in two phases. First, we conducted focus groups with 12 participants with TBI to inform adaptations. We then tested the adapted protocol (n = 6). Pos

Social phobia and PTSD in Vietnam veterans.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most prevalent psychological disorder experienced by Vietnam veterans. However, there are many other disorders and problems of adjustment, like social anxiety and social phobia, that have not been fully investigated in this population. This study examined the prevalence of social phobia and the comorbidity of social phobia and PTSD, and tested out a theory of the etiology of social anxiety in trauma victims. Forty one Vietnam combat veterans were interviewed and completed self-report measures assessing PTSD and social phobia. Adversity of homecoming

Navigating perinatal mental health care: migrant women's experiences of support pathways and the role of digital resources.

BACKGROUND: Migrant women experience disproportionately high rates of perinatal mental health difficulties, shaped by intersecting cultural, social, and systemic barriers. Despite the increasing role of digital technologies in healthcare delivery, their potential to support equitable perinatal mental health care remains underexplored and often fails to reflect the complex realities of migrant women's lives. This study examined how women from migrant backgrounds in Australia navigate perinatal mental health care across clinical, community, and digital settings, with a particular focus on how di

Preference for palliative care among low-income advanced cancer patients in Mainland China: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have highlighted the significant impact of income on access to palliative care. However, few studies have explored the treatment preferences of low-income patients with advanced cancer. These individuals require additional support in terms of palliative care, including financial psychological, spiritual, and social assistance. AIM: To explore the preference and influencing factors of palliative care among low-income advanced cancer pati

Navigating the challenging storms of cancer management in a national cancer centre: perspectives of female patients.

BACKGROUND: Breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers are among the top ten global cancers, affecting women, with age-standardized rates per 100,000 being 47.8 for breast, 13.3 for cervical, and 6.6 for ovarian cancer. The journey from cancer symptoms, through diagnosis and treatment, to survivorship, presents numerous challenges. These challenges encompass physical, psychological, and social aspects, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. It is crucial for research to explore not only the challenges faced by patients but also the strategies they employ to cope with these obstacles. M

METHODS: Data from 6600 men and 6868 women aged 65 years or older without disability were obtained from the Aichi Geronto

Altered activity within the social behavior neural network in adolescent rats following prenatal alcohol exposure and/or early-life adversity.

BACKGROUND: Social behavior relies on the dynamic, complex, and coordinated activity of a highly conserved "social behavior neural network," which includes the olfactory bulb (OB), piriform cortex (PCX), lateral septum, medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), amygdala, paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), and ventral hippocampus. Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is known to disrupt social behavior development, leading to lifelong social functioning impairments. Individuals with PAE are at heightened risk of experiencing early-life adversity (ELA), which independently affects social behav
