Prevalence and factors associated with Trichomonas vaginalis infection in indigenous Brazilian women.

There is a scarcity of studies on the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) in indigenous populations of Brazil. We conducted a cross-sectional study between January and December 2018, on indigenous women living nearby an urban center of the Midwest region of Brazil and determined the prevalence of TV. Factors associated with TV infection and a comparison of molecular and direct microscopy diagnoses were determined. 241 indigenous women aged above 18 years participated in the study. Cervical and vaginal brush samples were collected to diagnose TV through polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Dir

Trauma-Informed Programs Based in Schools: Linking Concepts to Practices and Assessing the Evidence.

When children experience stress and adversity in their homes and communities, schools become a critically important setting in which to intervene and foster their resilience. Changing practices within schools so that vulnerable and traumatized children are better understood and more compassionately served is a goal shared by many school professionals, yet schools remain poorly equipped to address the needs of these children. Any number of school-based programs have the potential to benefit children with an elevated risk for academic difficulties and mental health disorders, although questions

Examining patterns of cognitive impairment among homeless and precariously housed urban youth.

INTRODUCTION: Homeless and precariously housed young people are a complex, vulnerable population frequently perceived as being difficult to engage in health and social services. Although unrecognized deficits in cognitive functioning may adversely affect their ability to access assistance and meaningfully participate in programming, few researchers have examined these deficits. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent of global and domain-specific cognitive impairment of street involved young people. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted using intake data from 494 cli

Effects of Maternal Homelessness, Supplemental Nutrition Programs, and Prenatal PM2.5 on Birthweight.

Few studies examined the impact of maternal socioeconomic status and of its combined effects with environmental exposures on birthweight. Our goal was to examine the impact of maternal homelessness (mothers ever homeless or who lived in shelters during pregnancy) and participation in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) during pregnancy in conjunction with air pollution exposure on birthweight in the Boston-based Children's HealthWatch cohort from 2007 through 2015 (n = 3366). Birthweight was obtained from electronic health records. Information on ma

Social and Functional Characteristics of Receipt and Service Use Intensity of Core Early Intervention Services.

OBJECTIVE: Describe children's diagnostic, social, and functional characteristics associated with the use of core early intervention (EI) services. METHODS: The sample included infants and toddlers (N = 2045) discharged from an urban EI program (2014-2016). Adjusted logit models estimated the marginal effects and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of receipt of any of the 4 core EI services, controlling for the child's developmental condition type, race and ethnicity, primary language, sex, insurance type, age at referral, and functional performance at EI entry. Adjusted median regression estimat

'The Internet Both Reassures and Terrifies': exploring the more-than-human worlds of health information using the story completion method.

Lay people are now encouraged to be active in seeking health and medical information and acting on it to engage in self-care and preventive health practices. Over the past three decades, digital media offering ready access to health information resources have rapidly expanded. In this article, I discuss findings from my study that sought to investigate health information practices by bringing together the social research method of story completion with more-than-human theory and postqualitative inquiry. Narratives of health, illness and embodiment are powerful ways to portray people's experien

National Study of Childhood Traumatic Events and Adolescent and Adult Criminal Justice Involvement Risk: Evaluating the Protective Role of Social Support From Mentors During Adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: With nearly 11 million people in the United States arrested in 2015, the need to identify antecedent risk factors driving criminal justice involvement (CJI) and possible mitigating factors is crucial. This study examines the relation between childhood trauma and CJI in adolescence and adulthood and assesses how this relation is moderated by mentoring during young adulthood. METHODS: The analysis included 3 waves of data-adolescents, young adults, and adults-collected from 1995 to 2008 from 12,288 adolescents who participated in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult

Growth patterns of future orientation among maltreated youth: A prospective examination of the emergence of resilience.

During adolescence, a positive outlook toward the future (i.e., future orientation) can protect youth from the risks conferred by childhood adversity. Research to date, however, has largely considered future orientation as a static attribute. Developmental systems perspectives suggest that future orientation, when considered across time, will exhibit dynamic trajectories with levels changing in response to the varying balance of risks and resources in youths' environments. Investigating the developmental course and consequences of future orientation is particularly germane to maltreated youth

Relations of drug use and socioeconomic factors with adherence to dental treatment among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are vulnerable to behaviors that weaken health, by adopting habits that interfere with adherence to treatment. The aims of the present study were to investigate adolescents' adherence to dental treatment and the relations between this behavior and socioeconomic factors and consumption of licit and illicit chemical substances. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted with 474 adolescents from Piracicaba/SP/Brazil, who initially underwent a dental examination to verify the adherence for dental treatment. After 18 months, 325 adolescents were reassessed. Valid question

Pregnant substance abusers in voluntary and coercive treatment in Norway: Therapists' reflections on change processes and attachment experiences.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore therapists' discourses on treatment processes, when working with pregnant substance abusers in voluntary and coercive treatment, and looking for the clinical implications of these discourses. BACKGROUND: Treatment of substance use disorder faces many challenges. One is pregnancy and motherhood, which are vulnerable and complex processes. The literature emphasises lack of optimal and knowledge-based treatment for this group. DESIGN: The study follows a Foucauldian inspired discourse analysis. METHOD: Forty therapists from four different residential units in No

Factors associated with depression among homeless mothers. Results of the ENFAMS survey.

PURPOSE: Women are disproportionately likely to suffer from depression. This is especially true for those who experience socioeconomic hardship, such as homelessness. In France, among homeless mothers many are migrant. However, it is not clear whether risk factors associated with depression are specific for this group or the same as in the general population. Our objective was to describe socio-demographic, relational, living and housing conditions and health factors associated with depression among homeless mothers. METHODS: The ENFAMS survey, conducted via face-to-face bilingual interviews

A Polydrug and Psychosocial Profile of Synthetic Cannabinoid Use in a New York City Community Sample, 2016-2017.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic reports available on synthetic cannabinoids (SCs) have focused on sociodemographics, indicating high prevalence of SC use predominantly among white, relatively affluent, males. However, there is emerging evidence suggesting high SC prevalence among socioeconomically disadvantaged, racial/ethnic minority males. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to investigate the risk correlates of SC use among psychosocial vulnerable communities. METHOD: The sample of 100 participants was recruited from two harm reduction-focused, community-based organizations in the South Br

Refugees' admission to mental health institutions in Norway: Is there an ethnic density effect?

Some recent European research claims that immigrants settle in urban areas with low scores on level-of-living conditions and a high prevalence of health-risk factors, and that these settlement patterns adversely affect their health. Other studies question the association between immigrant segregation and area deprivation on one hand, and negative health outcomes on the other hand, and identify possible beneficial effects of segregation, specifically the ethnic density effect. This paper aims to explore the possible ethnic density effect among refugees, a sub-population that often appears relat

Gender and Dating Violence Perpetration and Victimization: A Comparison of American and Chinese College Students.

Previous research has shown that violence in romantic relationships is a serious social and public health problem throughout the world among young adults. College students, as a vulnerable group, experience high rates of dating violence, irrespective of gender and nation. Yet, we still know relatively little about whether dating violence shows gender similarities or differences in different cultural settings. United States and China are both patriarchal societies but have diverse cultural background. There may be different gendered patterns of dating violence across these two countries. This s
