Two novel and unique adsorptive materials, one (Fluorolock®) from clay mineral sepiolite coated with the cationic polymer polydiallyldimethylammionium chloride (pDADMAC) and the other (Intraplex®) from colloidal activated carbon were specially developed for the in situ remediation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the saturated zone. We evaluated the potential of both materials to immobilize PFAS in soils under flow conditions via soil column experiments using groundwater, which was contaminated with PFAS in the field. Furthermore, the potential ecotoxicological effects of both

There is a need in Ukraine for re-evaluation of the status of lands outside the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone which were abandoned in the years after the accident. Since the 1991 criteria for zoning were put in place, there has been no re-classification of abandoned lands even though radionuclide contamination density and, for radiocaesium isotopes, mobility have both declined. This study describes the development of a protocol for assessment of abandoned lands in Ukraine based on a 100 ha experimental plot. A simple method of quantification of 137Cs contamination density was developed using extern

Recent studies have shown that stem fluxes, although highly variable among trees, can alter the strength of the methane (CH4) sink or nitrous oxide (N2O) source in some forests, but the patterns and magnitudes of these fluxes remain unclear. This study investigated the drivers of subdaily and seasonal variations in stem and soil CH4, N2O and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes. CH4, N2O and CO2 fluxes were measured continuously for 19 months in individual stems of two tree species, Eperua falcata (Aubl.) and Lecythis poiteaui (O. Berg), and surrounding soils using an automated chamber system in an upl

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is a CO2 removal technology that involves spreading finely ground silicate rock on fields. The chemical weathering of this rock powder removes atmospheric CO2 in the form of bicarbonate ions and secondary carbonates. Despite some promising theoretical simulations and laboratory findings, results from field trials that evaluate the ERW's impact on soil biogeochemistry and CO2 removal are still scarce. This study investigated the impact of basaltic rock powder applied at the equivalent rate of 20 t per hectare (2 kg m-2) in three temperate vineyard fields in Switze

BACKGROUND: Contamination with crude oil and hydrocarbons has become a global threat. Such threats have urged us to invent solutions to deal with this dilemma. However, chemical treatment comes with limited benefits. The use of bioremediation proved to be the optimal approach to face this problem since it is cost-effective, time-conserving and may improve the quality of soil and increase its fertility.
METHODS: Soil samples were collected from three sites with the highest degree of pollution in Iraq: Al-Latifia, Al-Begei, and Basra. These were the source of novel Streptomyces isolates that co

Anthrax is a lethal bacterial zoonosis primarily affecting herbivorous wildlife and livestock. Upon host death Bacillus anthracis vegetative cells form spores capable of surviving for years in soil. Anthrax transmission requires host exposure to large spore doses. Thus, conditions that facilitate higher spore concentrations or promote spore survival will increase the probability that a pathogen reservoir infects future hosts. We investigated abiotic and pathogen genomic variation in relation to spore concentrations in surface soils (0-1 cm depth) at 40 plains zebra (Equus quagga) anthrax carca

A novel, low-cost, and portable paper strip biosensor was developed for the detection of tetracycline antibiotics. Escherichia coli/pMTLacZ containing the tetracycline-mediated regulatory gene used as recognition elements with β-galactosidase as the reporter protein was designed and applied to cheap and portable Whatman filter paper as the carrier to prepare this paper strip biosensor. The detection process was optimized by using EDTA and polymyxin B as a sensitizer to improve the accuracy of detection for complicated matrices. The paper strip biosensor was suitable for tetracycline concentrat

Coccidioidomycosis, also known as Valley fever, has been reported among military personnel in Coccidioides-endemic areas of the southwestern United States since World War II. In this study, the prevalence of Coccidioides was confirmed in different soil and dust samples collected near three military bases in California using DNA extraction and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methods. Analyses of physical and chemical parameters revealed no significant differences between Coccidioides-positive and -negative sites. Soil samples collected in the Mojave Desert (near Twentynine Palms MCAGCC) showed

Phytoremediation of sites contaminated with iron cyanides can be performed using poplar and willow trees. Poplar and willow trees were grown in potting substrate spiked with ferrocyanide concentrations of up to 2,000 mg kg(-1) for 4 and 8 weeks respectively. Soil solution and leaf tissue of different age were sampled for total cyanide analysis every week. Chlorophyll content in the leaves was determined to quantify cyanide toxicity. Results showed that cyanide in the soil solution of spiked soils differed between treatments and on weekly basis and ranged from 0.5 to 1,200 mg l(-1). The maximum

Nine profile soil samples were collected from Xiaodian sewage irrigation area in Taiyuan city, and the concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were determined by gas chromatography coupled with electron capture detector (GC-ECD) to analyze the vertical distribution. The results showed that the OCPs were mainly accumulated in the surface soil layer (0-30 cm) with the maximum concentration of 98.56 ng x g(-1), and HCHs, DDTs, endosulfans and methoxychlor were the predominant contaminants compared with other pesticides in the surface soil, which accounted for 85.1% in total OCPs. Sensitivities of a wildlife species, deer mice, to oxidants were evaluated. A single dose (1589 mg/kg body weight by intraperitoneal injection) of carbon tetrachloride, a typical hepatotoxicant, caused changes in GCL activity and GSH content in multiple organs of deer mice. Hepatic GCL activity and GSH content were depleted substantially (P<0.01), renal GCL activity increased (P<0.05). Blood, brain and heart GCL activities increased (P<0.05), whereas GSH contents decreased significantly. Deer mice were exposed to Pb, or Pb together with Cu and Zn via drinking water for 4 weeks. GCL activities

Metal concentrations during composting reflect changes in dry mass, metal inputs or losses, and the fraction recovered by digestion. Concentrations of Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb were measured over 90 days in five poultry litter (PL): vegetable waste blends and analyzed under three assumptions about dry matter loss. Cd in pure-PL compost increased from 0.84 to 3.34 mg kg-1 dry matter. After correction for the loss inferred from Zn and Mn, mean apparent recovery factors were 1.03 for Zn, Cu, Mn, and Ni and 5.11 for Cr, Cd, and Pb (95% bootstrap interval 3.05-8.23). The latter group remai

Microplastic accumulation is an increasingly widespread anthropogenic disturbance in agricultural soils, yet ecological risk assessments remain dominated by simplified laboratory assays that may not capture context-dependent responses under field conditions. Here, we combined a five-year experiment across four semi-arid cropland sites with a global synthesis restricted exclusively to outdoor field observations to quantify microplastic effects on crop yield, soil quality, and ecosystem multifunctionality. Under a high microplastic loading (0.2% w/w), we detected no consistent negative functiona

Under the context of global climate change, increasingly frequent heatwaves and wildfires subject near-surface soils to substantial thermal disturbance. Microplastics, as emerging persistent pollutants, are ubiquitous in agricultural and urban soils as well as aeolian deposits; their melting, pyrolysis, and carbonization at elevated temperatures can markedly alter soil pore structure and connectivity. In this study, Quaternary Malan loess from Shaanxi Province, China, was used as the test material. A series of experiments was conducted by varying polyethylene microplastic contents (1%, 3%, 4%,

Driven by industrial policies and market expansion, China has formed the world's largest medicinal plant cultivation industry. However, sustainable herbal production is seriously hindered by continuous monoculture obstacles (CMOs), which arise from prolonged single-species successive cultivation and manifest as comprehensive soil degradation featuring autotoxic allelochemical buildup, unbalanced rhizosphere microbiota, impaired soil physicochemical conditions, and frequent soil-borne pathogen outbreaks. Such adverse alterations lower soil enzyme activity, disrupt microbial community homeostasi

In response to anthropogenic environmental changes, biological communities often undergo compositional changes, which are traditionally thought to represent adaptation. However, this hypothesis and its mechanism remain surprisingly underexplored. In this study, we conducted a 10-year nitrogen deposition experiment in the Eurasian steppe, manipulating nine intensities under two management strategies (fencing or mowing). As the intensity increased from 0-20 to 50 g N m-2 yr-1, the succession rates of both plant and soil microbial communities first increased but then decreased, implying that high

Lead (Pb) toxicity imposed hazardous impacts to agricultural lands, which presents a serious threat to crop productivity, soil health, and ecological sustainability. This study aims to elucidate the synergistic potential of vermicompost and biogas slurry in remediating Pb-stress under controlled conditions. Unlike previous studies that examined these organic inputs individually, this research focuses to explore their potential interactive effects on maize seedlings growth, root structural traits along with root anatomical structures, morphological, and photosynthetic indices. Tree rings are used for biomonitoring environmental conditions, providing insight into chemical constituents present during a tree's growth. Here, we report the utilization of tree rings and aerial parts (i.e., leaves, shoots, and fruits) of Muntingia calabura Linn. (locally known as mansanitas or aratiles), as well as soil near the trees, to monitor spatial distribution of the presence of mercury (Hg) in 18 cities and municipalities of Cebu, Philippines. While uncommon, tropical tree rings from core samples also provide insight into the chronology of mercury uptake in M. calabura trees betwee

Non-Basmati aromatic rice varieties of Indian landrace are preferred for their distinctive aroma and superior grain quality, yet they generally exhibit lower yield potential. Rhizosphere microbial activities play a crucial role in plant performance under organic nutrient management. A 3-year field experiment was conducted in Indo-Gangetic alluvial soil to evaluate whether microbial ecological diversity or functional attributes exert a stronger impact on the yield and aroma of six indigenous non-basmati aromatic rice varieties, along with one non-aromatic check. A total of 140 bacterial culture

Legumes play a pivotal role in addressing global challenges of food and nutrition security by offering a sustainable source of protein and bioactive compounds. The capacity of legumes to establish symbiotic relationships with rhizobia bacteria enables biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), reducing the dependence on chemical fertilizers while enhancing soil health. However, the efficiency of this symbiosis is significantly influenced by environmental factors, such as soil acidity, salinity, temperature, moisture content, light intensity, and nutrient availability. These factors affect key process
