Effect of a specially formulated diet on progression of heart enlargement in dogs with subclinical degenerative mitral valve disease.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies in dogs with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) have identified altered myocardial energy metabolism and oxidation, which might contribute to cardiac hypertrophy. Diets rich in medium chain fatty acids and antioxidants are a potential means of treatment. A previous clinical study found significantly smaller left atrial diameter (LAD) and left atrium-to-aorta diameter ratio (LA : Ao) in dogs with subclinical DMVD fed a specially formulated diet vs control diet for 6 months. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: A specially formulated diet will slow or arrest left heart enla

Decompression strain in parachute jumpmasters during simulated high-altitude missions: a special reference to preoxygenation strategies.

PURPOSE: Military parachute operations are often executed at high altitude, from an unpressurized aircraft compartment. Parachute jumpmasters (JM) are thus regularly exposed to 29,500 ft for 60 min. The aim was to investigate the decompression strain during a simulated JM mission at high altitude and to compare two strategies of preoxygenation, conducted either at sea-level or below 10,000 ft, during ascent to mission altitude. METHODS: Ten JM completed, on separate occasions, a 45-min preoxygenation either at sea-level (normobaric: N) or 8200ft (hypobaric: H), followed by exposure to 28,000

Correlation between genotype and phenotype with special attention to hearing in 14 Japanese cases of NF2-related schwannomatosis.

NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder caused by variants in the NF2 gene. Approximately 50% of NF2 patients inherit pathogenic variants, and the remainder acquire de novo variants. NF2 is characterized by development of bilateral vestibular schwannomas. The genetic background of Japanese NF2 cases has not been fully investigated, and the present report performed a genetic analysis of 14 Japanese NF2 cases and examined genotype-phenotype correlations. DNA samples collected from peripheral blood were analyzed by next-generation sequencing, multiplex ligation

Consensus recommendations on counselling in Phelan-McDermid syndrome, with special attention to recurrence risk and to ring chromosome 22.

This paper focuses on genetic counselling in Phelan-McDermid syndrome (PMS), a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by a deletion 22q13.3 or a pathogenic variant in SHANK3. It is one of a series of papers written by the European PMS consortium as a consensus guideline. We reviewed the available literature based on pre-set questions to formulate recommendations on counselling, diagnostic work-up and surveillance for tumours related to ring chromosome 22. All recommendations were approved by the consortium, which consists of professionals and patient representatives, using a voting procedure.

Foreign body aspiration in children at University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, a two year retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) is defined as asphyxia, suffocation, or inhalation of items of food, such as bone and seed, and non-food, such as toys, into the respiratory tract. Aspiration of foreign bodies is an important and preventable cause of mortality and morbidity in children, especially those less than 3 years of age. The aim of this study was to analyse the clinical and radiological profile, modes of management, and outcomes of foreign body aspiration in children at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital and identify areas of possible interventions f

Chronic Kidney Disease Transdifferentiates Veins into a Specialized Immune-Endocrine Organ with Increased MYCN-AP1 Signaling.

Most patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) choose hemodialysis as their treatment of choice. Thus, upper-extremity veins provide a functioning arteriovenous access to reduce dependence on central venous catheters. However, it is unknown whether CKD reprograms the transcriptome of veins and primes them for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) failure. To examine this, we performed transcriptomic analyses of bulk RNA sequencing data of veins isolated from 48 CKD patients and 20 non-CKD controls and made the following findings: (1) CKD converts veins into i

NSCLC patients with a changing T grade after operation may represent a special subset of tumor staging.

BACKGROUND: There is consensus that postoperative adjuvant therapy is not recommended in patients with stage 1a non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Meanwhile, it is still controversial whether postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended for NSCLC patients with T2aN0M0 (stage 1b). In some patients with stage 1b NSCLC without pleural invasion, tumor diameter was measured between 3 and 4 cm by preoperative imaging and less than 3 cm by postoperative pathology specimens. TNM staging in such patients is both radiologic stage 1b and pathologic stage 1a. Thoracic surgeons are often confused ab

Risk of Exposure to Coccidioides spp. in the Temblor Special Recreation Management Area (SRMA), Kern County, CA.

The Temblor Mountain Special Recreation Area (SRMA) on the western flank of the San Joaquin Valley, CA, is located in the endemic area of Coccidioides, a fungal pathogen responsible for the increasing incidence of coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever). Recreationists in the SRMA, such as off-highway vehicle (OHV) drivers and mountain bikers who disturb the soils, are at risk of being exposed to airborne arthroconidia (asexual spores) of the pathogen. To reduce the risk of pathogen exposure for visitors, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to limit recreational activities to areas with a redu

Neural correlates of recognition and naming of famous persons and landmarks: A special role for the left anterior temporal lobe.

The anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) have been shown to be crucial for recognition and naming of unique entities such as persons and places. In this chapter, we review previous research that identified the neural underpinnings of these processes, and discuss the convergence zone theory of conceptual knowledge and proper name retrieval. Lesion-deficit and neuroimaging studies have found that the temporal poles are essential for recognition and naming of unique persons and places. Research has shown laterality, in that the right anterior temporal pole is specialized for recognition and the left fo

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy for Squamous Cell Cancer of the Head and Neck in a Specialized Peruvian Public Hospital.

Squamous cell cancer of the head and neck (SCCHN) often requires adjuvant radiotherapy. Radiotherapy for SCCHN is a challenge because the head and neck contain several critical organs that should receive minimal doses of radiation. These organs include the eyes, parotid glands, brainstem, spinal cord, mandible, and thyroid gland. Approaches like image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) combined with volumetric modulated arc therapy hold the promise to focus radiation to the planning target volume and spare nearby structures while observing potential changes to patient anatomy during treatment to deter

The importance of analyzing the serum C3-epimer level for evaluating vitamin D storage in some special populations.

OBJECTIVE: The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is recommended by various management agencies for evaluating the nutritional status of vitamin D (VitD). However, 25(OH)D cannot reflect the actual composition and activity of VitD in vivo. This study used UPLC-MS/MS to detect the levels of serum VitD metabolites in some special populations, so as to clarify its importance in accurately evaluating VitD storage in vivo. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 2029 subjects were enrolled, including 1204 cases in minor health (MH), 467 in the minor disease (MD), 119 in the adult health (AH) and 239 in
