Periodontitis presenting among betel quid users: A case series.

BACKGROUND: Betel leaf chewing habit has been studied extensively, as it has been an ancient practice in many Asian countries. Although betel leaf has been reported to have potential beneficial properties, it has also been shown to have a strong association with oral diseases, including periodontitis. This case series addresses the presentation of periodontitis among betel quid users, to help clinicians identify and manage such patients when they are encountered in settings outside the countries and territories where betel quid use is common. METHODS: Four patients of Asian ethnicity were ref

Exploration of effect of Odanacatib on inhibiting orthodontic recurrence in rats and on CatK and IGF-1 mRNA.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of Odanacatib on orthodontic recurrence in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty rats were selected to establish a planting anchorage molar movement model, and 50 g of force was used for the mesial movement of the right maxillary first molar. Forty rats were randomly divided into the observation group (n=20) and control group (n=20). Odanacatib (60 μl, 1.25 μM) was locally injected into the mucoperiosteum around the right maxillary first molar of rats in the experimental group, and an equal amount of normal saline was injected into

Incidence of bruxism in TMD population.

The objective of the study presented here was to examine the incidence of bruxism in patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders. Two cohorts of patients suffering from temporomandibular disorders were evaluated. One group, composed of 163 patients, was asked specifically about the occurrence of bruxism, while the other group, composed of 200 patients, was not specifically asked about bruxism (self-reporting). The incidence of bruxism was only 20.5% for the group that only self-reported bruxism, while the incidence was 65% when asked specifically about bruxism. It is critical to ask sp

Ligneous Periodontitis in a Patient with Type 1 Plasminogen Deficiency: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Ligneous periodontitis or destructive membranous periodontal disease is a rare condition involving gingival tissues, which is due to plasminogen deficiency and fibrin deposition. Plasminogen deficiency is an ultrarare autosomal recessive disease. The disease is characterized by gingival enlargement and periodontal tissue destruction that leads to rapid tooth loss despite treatment attempts. A defect in fibrinolysis and abnormal wound healing are the main pathogenesis of this condition. It is caused by mutations in PLG, the gene coding for plasminogen, which results in decreased lev

Taking heed of the 'danger space': acute descending necrotising mediastinitis secondary to primary odontogenic infection.

Descending necrotising mediastinitis (DNM) is an uncommon clinical entity which may arise secondary to primary odontogenic or neck infection in susceptible patients. Infection may spread contiguously via the alar or 'danger' space, a potential anatomical space posterior to the true retropharyngeal space.1 Spread of infection to the mediastinum almost always necessitates urgent cardiothoracic surgical intervention.2-4 This case report describes a male patient whose clinical deterioration following the diagnosis of submandibular abscess was investigated with CT imaging of the chest, where a diag

Application of cone beam computed tomography in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

In the past decade, the utility of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images in oral and maxillofacial surgery has seen continuous increase. However, CBCT images are not always able to replace other imaging modalities. Based on the current published knowledge, this paper discusses advantages and limitations of CBCT images in the diagnosis and surgical planning of dentoalveolar procedures, odontogenic cysts, benign and malignant tumours, inflammatory changes, orthognathic surgery, maxillofacial trauma, sinus disorders, and systemic and osseous conditions that manifest in the maxillofacial are

Oral health of children in southern Sudan.

426 4- 17-year-old children (89% males) from the Jonglei Province and 50 12- and 15-year-old children from Juba town in Southern Sudan were examined according to WHO criteria (9). The prevalence of calculus and intense gingivitis was high, and highest at ages 8 and 9 years. 8% of 25-year-old children had advanced periodontal disease but this was confined to the anterior mandibular region. Caries prevalence was very low, but much higher in Juba town (36% at both age 12 and age 15 years) than in the Jonglei Province children (4% at 12 years and 8% at 15 years of age). Mineral trioxide aggregate versus calcium hydroxide for pulpotomy in primary molars.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium hydroxide (CH) for pulpotomy in primary molars. METHODS: A randomised, bilateral self-controlled clinical trial was designed to compare the clinical effect of MTA and CH in pulpotomies in primary molars in 4- to 9-year-old children. Children with two similar-sized cavities on bilateral primary molar counterparts requiring pulpotomies were included. The two contralateral molars in each patient were randomly assigned to MTA or CH treatment. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed to evaluate the trea

Mapping the Oral Microbiome's Role in Periodontal Disease Progression: A Systematic Review.

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition characterized by progressive destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues and a shift from a symbiotic to a dysbiotic oral microbial community, rather than by a single pathogen. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on how alterations in microbial composition, community structure, and functional activity contribute to periodontal disease severity and progression. A comprehensive literature search across four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Embase) was conducted. Studies were included if they were peer-reviewed, h

Relationship between periodontal disease and preterm birth. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease (PD) is a chronic inflammatory disease of multifactorial origin that affects the supporting tissues of the tooth. According to WHO in 2022, it affects around 19% of the adult population worldwide. Its risk factors include the presence of periodontopathogenic bacteria in biofilm and the susceptibility of the host's immune system, among others. Preterm birth is defined as birth occurring before 37 weeks of gestational age. It also has a multifactorial origin and it's associated with risk factors such as intrauterine and extrauterine infections. There is a possibil

Plasma metabolome and skin proteins in Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A patients.

OBJECTIVE: Charcot-Marie-Tooth 1A (CMT1A) disease is the most common inherited neuropathy that lacks of therapy and of molecular markers to assess disease severity. Herein, we have pursued the identification of potential biomarkers in plasma samples and skin biopsies that could define the phenotype of CMT1A patients at mild (Mi), moderate (Mo) and severe (Se) stages of disease as assessed by the CMT neuropathy score to contribute to the understanding of CMT pathophysiology and eventually inform of the severity of the disease. METHODS: We have used: (i) a high-throughput untargeted metabolomic

The severity, extent and recurrence of necrotizing periodontal disease in relation to HIV status and CD4+ T cell count.

South Africa ranks among the three countries with the highest prevalence of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa, with an estimated 29.5% of women attending antenatal clinics being infected. Necrotizing periodontal disease is a well recognized HIV-associated oral condition. The objective of this investigation was to determine a possible correlation between the extent, severity and treatment outcome of necrotizing periodontal disease in relation to a person's HIV status and CD4+ T cell count. Data from 105 consecutive patients presenting with necrotizing periodontal disease at an academic oral h

Low-grade inflammation in chronic infectious diseases: paradigm of periodontal infections.

Increasing evidence implicates periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the tooth-supporting structures, as a potential risk factor for increased morbidity or mortality for several systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease (atherosclerosis, heart attack, and stroke), pregnancy complications (spontaneous preterm birth [SPB]), and diabetes mellitus. Cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies indicate that periodontitis may confer two- and up to sevenfold increase in the risk for cardiovascular disease and premature birth, respectively. Given the recently acquired knowle
