BACKGROUND: Massive haemoptysis is a life-threatening situation which requires immediate medical attention and intervention. We reviewed 23 patients with life-threatening haemoptysis to document the cause, describe the treatment of these patients and to determine which form of treatment had a better outcome.
DESIGN: Retrospective case study.
METHODS: Consecutive patients were reviewed and data collected for the underlying cause, treatment and outcome of patients with life-threatening haemoptysis.
RESULTS: Out of 23 patients, nine patients had active pulmonary tuberculosis and nine patients

We experienced adverse reactions to antituberculous agents in 17 patients (53%) out of 32 patients treated for tuberculosis and nontuberculous pulmonary mycobacteriosis. Side effects were seen in 15 patients (47%), and abnormal laboratory findings were observed in 9 patients (28%). Most side effects mostly appeared within two weeks after the administration, and were of short duration. However, there were also side effects such as neurological symptoms, arthralgia, and general fatigue which appeared after one month and lasted for a long duration. These results suggest that careful observation f

Among 61 patients with AIDS seen in our hospital from February 1986 to June 1992, 38 (62%) had significant weight loss, 34 (56%) had fever of more than a month and 19 (31%) had chronic diarrhoea; 43 (70%) patients had at least one of the above symptoms. Tuberculosis diagnosed in 32 (52%) patients was the commonest secondary infection: 10 had only pulmonary, 15 had pulmonary and extrapulmonary and 7 only extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Secondary infections commonly found in the general population, predominantly with pathogenic bacteria were found in 27 (44%) patients, 45 (74%) patients had opportu

Twenty-five adult tuberculosis patients with intrathoracic lymphadenopathy were studied. Intrathoracic tuberculous lymphadenopathy seems rare in Chinese and affects more older and female subjects. The most common symptoms were cough, followed by chills, fever and the most common physical finding was peripheral lymph node enlargement. The roentgenographic appearance of mediastinal lesions varied but often included right paratracheal involvement. Nine patients had clear lungs. Tuberculous involvement was limited to the lower lung field in seven out of 16 patients with concomitant parenchymal les

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of using volunteer screeners in active tuberculosis case-finding in South Kivu, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, especially among groups at high risk of tuberculosis infection.
METHODS: To identify and screen high-risk groups in remote communities, we trained volunteer screeners, mainly those who had themselves received treatment for tuberculosis or had a family history of the disease. A non-profit organization was created and screeners received training on the disease and its transmission at 3-day workshops. Screeners recorded the number of people sc

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis and nephrotuberculosis, due to the similarity of the radiographic patterns, share the same differential diagnosis list. The study aimed to analyze the incidence of co-occurrence of nephrotuberculosis and urolithiasis and to determine the impact of urolithiasis on the clinical course of renal tuberculosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This open cohort retrospective study comprised 843 patients with renal tuberculosis and 245 patients with urolithiasis. 1088 medical records were analyzed to identify cases with co-occurrence of these two diseases and determine the clinical pr

Bovine tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium bovis, a mycobacterium highly similar to M. tuberculosis that belongs to the M. tuberculosis complex. The main host of M. bovis is cattle but it also affects many other mammalians including humans. Tuberculosis in humans caused by either M. bovis or M. tuberculosis is clinically hard to distinguish. During 2004-2005, samples from 448 patients with diagnosis of TB were collected from different regions of Argentina. The PRA technique identified 400 isolates with representative patterns of mycobacterium. The predominant ones were the M. tuberculosis

BACKGROUND: Although the causes of the worldwide resurgence of tuberculosis are multifactorial, the HIV epidemic is believed to have had a central role. Control is further threatened by the emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.
METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was undertaken of trends in pulmonary and extrapulmonary culture positive mycobacterial pathology, and the prevalence of drug-resistant tuberculosis in both HIV seropositive and, presumptively, HIV seronegative patients receiving their clinical care at St Mary's Hospital, London. Five hundred and thirty eight patients (188 o

Optic nerve tuberculoma is a rare extra-pulmonary manifestation of mycobacterial infection. It is usually associated with HIV infected patients. Due to its clinical polymorphism, the diagnosis and management of the disease either in immunocompetent patients and immunocompromised ones remains challenging. Herein, we discuss a case of a 32-year-old patient with no history of immunodeficiency admitted for multifocal tuberculosis with a reduced visual acuity as an extra-pulmonary manifestation, and radiologically revealed the presence of tuberculoma in the optic nerve in the cerebral MRI.

Chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis is un uncommon disease which is found in people with underlying lung disease or in mildly immunocompromised patients. It is an exceptional complication in silicosis and its diagnosis is difficult because it simulates other diseases like tuberculosis and cancer which are more common in such patients. We report on three cases with a long history of silica dust exposure with pulmonary aspergillosis complicating progressive massive fibrosis (PMF). We review their clinical, radiological and treatment features.

The paper deals with the data of follow-up of adolescents with disseminated pulmonary processes of different etiology. Among the patients who were treated in the department during the last 10 years disseminated processes amounted to 3.3%, with disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis being recorded in 1.3% and dissemination of the nontuberculous etiology in 2% of the patients. Mucoviscidosis, metastasis, of the thyroid cancer, histiocytosis X, toxoplasmosis and echinococcosis were among the disseminations of the nontuberculous etiology. Basic diagnostic criteria have been determined.

INTRODUCTION: The coexistence of tuberculosis (TB) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses an emerging public health challenge, especially in high-TB-burden settings such as Peru. This comorbidity has been associated to unfavorable clinical outcomes and a higher frequency of drug-resistant TB.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of resistance to first-line antituberculosis drugs and identify factors associated with multidrug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB) among patients with T2DM and pulmonary TB treated at a public hospital in Lima, Peru.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: South Asian countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Bangladesh, have a high prevalence of pulmonary and extra-pulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB). This prevalence is influenced by various risk factors such as ethnicity, nutrition, socioeconomic disparities, high out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, and specific Mycobacterium Tuberculosis (TB) lineages. The COVID-19 pandemic has likely hindered access to healthcare and led to under-reporting of EPTB cases nationally and internationally. This rapid review aimed to summarize the literature on the prevalence and disease

Statistical shape analysis of lung is a reliable alternative method for diagnosing pulmonary diseases such as tuberculosis (TB). The 2D contour-based lung shape analysis is investigated and developed using Fourier descriptors (FDs). The proposed 2D lung shape analysis is carried out in threefold: (1) represent the normal and the abnormal (i.e. pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB)) lung shape models using Fourier descriptors modeling (FDM) framework from chest X-ray (CXR) images, (2) estimate and compare the 2D inter-patient lung shape variations for the normal and abnormal lungs by applying principal

The Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) includes non-tuberculous mycobacteria that are widely distributed and clinically significant. Similar to tuberculosis, MABC can lead to skin and soft tissue infections and pulmonary diseases. These infections frequently occur in outbreaks, particularly among immunocompromised patients or those with preexisting pulmonary conditions. This review examines the recent progress in essential areas that define these infections as a significant challenge in medical practice, specifically the diagnostic modalities, antibiotic treatment options, and resistance o

Paragonimiasis is a food-borne parasitic zoonosis caused by the genus Paragonimus. Fresh water snails, crabs, and crayfish are the first and second intermediate hosts, respectively. Humans acquire this infection by ingesting uncooked/undercooked crustaceans. Laboratory diagnosis of Paragonimiasis is done by demonstration of ova in the sputum/feces/pleural fluid or by serology. A case of pulmonary Paragonimiasis is presented herewith; the patient having been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis earlier. The aim of this presentation is to highlight this entity so that it is considered in the di

The case is that of a 70-year-old Japanese male who had peliosis hepatis with disseminated peliotic lesions in various organs. The initial sign was spontaneous pneumothorax followed by pulmonary hemorrhage. There was no history of anabolic steroid ingestion and his history of pulmonary tuberculosis revealed no pathological changes. Autopsy findings suggested that dilatation of sinusoids with slow progressive injury of sinusoidal endothelium and hepatocytes due to unknown local and general etiologic factors may be an initial mechanism in the development of peliosis hepatis.
