Thirty-three infants born to human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-seropositive women were evaluated from birth using plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures, polymerase chain reaction, and serum p24 antigen assays. Twenty-two cases of transverse myelopathy associated with malignancy were collected in nationwide survey in Japan. We evaluated 16 children at high risk for AIDS because of mothers infected with HIV. Two children were persistently seropositive and had laboratory and clinical evidence of HIV infection but had no detectable infectious HIV in their peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). The role of respiratory viral infection in wheezy bronchitis was studied in 163 children, aged 0-12 years, in a London general practice. Virological investigations were also performed when these same children had acute upper respiratory illness without wheeze. A virus was isolated in 146 (26.4%) of 554 episodes of wheezy bronchitis, rhinoviruses accounting for almost half of the isolations. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) is associated with high short- and long-term mortality. Prior nucleos(t)ide analogue (NA) treatment history, particularly treatment withdrawal and virological resistance, may contribute to ACLF development and influence prognosis after onset. However, the clinical impact of different NA treatment histories in patients with HBV-ACLF remains insufficiently characterized. This study evaluated the associations of baseline HBV-DNA status and prior NA treatment history with mortality in patients with HBV-ACLF.
