Mepolizumab: Which condition benefits more: Nasal polyps or eosinophilic asthma?

INTRODUCTION: The negative effects of eosinophilic severe asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) on quality of life are well known. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of mepolizumab treatment on the quality of life of patients diagnosed with eosinophilic severe asthma and CRSwNP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with CRSwNP and eosinophilic severe asthma who had been receiving mepolizumab 100 mg/month for at least six months as treatment were eligible for the study. Patients were assessed using quality of life and disease control questionnaires for both diseas

The Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Pain-Related Functioning Among Adolescents With Recurrent Musculoskeletal Pain: A Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is reported by 1 of 4 adolescents worldwide. Pain-related functioning is negatively affected by pain itself but also related to depressive symptoms. Although the association between pain-related functioning and depressive symptoms is established, there is a lack of longitudinal studies that establish the direction of the association. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to analyse the temporal association between depressive symptoms and pain-related functioning among adolescents with recurrent musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: This longitudinal sample comprised 604 a

No Significant Effect of Mild Urinary Tract Infection-Like Symptoms on Psychomotor Vigilance.

INTRODUCTION: Aircrew reluctance to urinate during flights, coupled with the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), represents an under-explored occupational health issue. The effects of UTIs on aviation-relevant tasks are not well understood; however, they may lead to disruptions and distractions, potentially affecting aviators' flight safety. METHODS: This observational study sought to investigate whether UTI-like symptoms impair psychomotor vigilance. A total of 38 healthy female subjects (N = 18 symptom group; N = 20 no symptom group) completed questionnaires and a 10-min Psychomotor Vi

Cerebellar-Prefrontal Connectivity Predicts Negative Symptom Severity Across the Psychosis Spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Negative symptom severity predicts functional outcomes and quality of life in people with psychosis. However, negative symptoms respond poorly to medication, and existing literature has not converged on their neurobiological basis. Previous work in small schizophrenia samples has observed that lower cerebellar-dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) connectivity is associated with higher negative symptom severity and that increasing cerebellar-DLPFC connectivity with neuromodulation reduces negative symptoms. We extended this finding by testing associations between cerebellar-DLPFC

Prevalence of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms and Contributing Factors among Medical Students.

BACKGROUND: Lower urinary tract symptoms are observed in individuals with pathologies affecting the lower urinary system. This survey aimed to evaluate the prevalence of lower urinary tract symptoms and the contributing factors amongst medical students, a young population undergoing a stressful educational process. METHODS: A 43-question survey was prepared for the first to sixth year medical students, incorporating the constipation scoring system to evaluate constipation, the generalized anxiety disorder 7-item scale to assess anxiety levels, and the core lower urinary tract symptom score to

Relationship of rare disorder latent clusters to anxiety and depression symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: A single rare disorder or disease (RD) affects fewer than 200,000 Americans. Combined, RDs affect 30 million Americans. Collectively, people with RDs have higher levels of anxiety and depression compared with those with prevalent diseases. Previous attempts to study psychological distress within individual RDs or disease classification systems are limited by low power, generalizability, and predictive utility. The present study used mixture modeling to identify meaningful RD clusters associated with anxiety and depression. METHOD: One-thousand and 218 participants with 232 RDs were

An empirical analysis of mental state talk and affect regulation in two single-cases of psychodynamic child therapy.

Literature has shown the importance of mentalizing techniques in symptom remission and emotional understanding; however, no study to date has looked at the dynamic relations between mental state talk and affect regulation in the psychotherapy process. From a psychodynamic perspective, the emergence of the child's capacity to regulate affect through the therapist's reflection on the child's mental states is a core aspect of treatment. In an empirical investigation of 2 single cases with separation anxiety disorder, who were treated in long-term psychodynamic play therapy informed with mentaliza

Long COVID in adults - a current review of the long-term health effects following SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Long-term health effects associated with SARS-CoV-2 pose major challenges for public health and health research worldwide. METHODS: Based on an ongoing literature review, a narrative review (as of June 2025) on the epidemiology and public health implications of long COVID in adults was compiled. RESULTS: According to population-based, controlled studies, long COVID symptoms occur with a frequency of approximately 10 to 15 % in adults infected with SARS-CoV-2. In addition to COVID-19 vaccination status and virus variant, the risk of experiencing long COVID symptoms is primarily in

[Cognitive behavioral group therapy for tinnitus].

Introduction and objective: The professional literature lists psychotherapy as the preferred treatment option for tinnitus. More precisely, cognitive behavioral therapy carries the greatest evidence in reducing the psychological symptoms of those affected. We launched a cognitive behavioral therapy-type group program for individuals affected by tinnitus at our clinic in February, 2022. Methods: The program takes place over seven weeks, for an hour and a half each weekly session. The assessment of the intervention is done in a pre-post arrangement, with self-administered measurements along the

Pineal region tumors: pathophysiological mechanisms of presenting symptoms.

Pineal region tumors (PRTs) affect all ages, with a remarkable proportion of cases occurring in children. They are mainly classified into three categories, namely germ cell tumors (GCTs), pineal parenchymal tumors (PPTs), and other tumors such as gliomas and tumors of the surrounding structures. The purpose of this article is to review the current literature regarding pathophysiological mechanisms of the presenting clinical features of patients with PRT. The usual presentation of PRTs is the symptoms of obstructive hydrocephalus and intracranial hypertension, such as headache and vomiting. How

Tourette's Syndrome.

Tourette's syndrome is a childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics, frequently accompanied by symptoms of obsessiveness and/or compulsiveness, anxiety, and behavioral impulsivity. Treatment of Tourette's syndrome symptoms should be considered when symptoms cause significant functional or social impairment or pain, as occurs with self-injurious tics. Because comorbid psychiatric disorders, particularly attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder often are present, clinicians must work with affected persons and

Kartagener's syndrome and the syndrome of immotile cilia.

Kartagener's syndrome (KS) is a hereditary disease with typical symptoms of situs inversus, bronchiectasis, and chronic infections of the nasal mucosa. Autosomal recessive inheritance cannot be doubted on account of repeated observations of affected sibs and parental cansanguinity. The bronchopulmonary symptoms in sibs, however, cannot be explained by this mode of inheritance. Recent clinical findings and electron microscope investigations suggest that KS is a special form of manifestation within the immotile cilia syndrome. This disease combines the typical bronchial and nasal symptoms of KS

Co-Occurrence of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: A Comprehensive Review.

Background/Objectives: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and psychotic disorders are clinically distinct conditions yet occasionally co-occur in ways that complicate assessment and treatment. ARFID is characterised by avoidance of food due to sensory sensitivities, fear of aversive consequences, or low interest in eating, without body-image distortion. Recent meta-analytic evidence suggests that ARFID affects a substantial proportion of the population and is associated with a considerable social burden. Psychosis is characterised by positive symptoms (hallucinations and delusio

Clinical phenotypes among patients with familial forms of Chiari malformation type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Chiari malformation type 1 (CM1) is the most common neurological disorder of the craniocervical junction. CM1 is characterized by cerebellar tonsillar herniation below the foramen magnum, causing CSF obstruction and neural compression. Patients with CM1 suffer from highly variable symptoms, progression, comorbidities, and outcomes, partly due to poor understanding of CM1 pathogenesis. In this paper, the authors present the only familial CM1 cohort study to statistically assess intrafamilial clinical phenotypes to date. METHODS: Comprehensive medical, surgical, and family histories

Asymmetrical Auditory Dysfunction as a Potential Nonmotor Lateralizing Sign in Parkinson's Disease: A Case-Control Study.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder that often presents with unilateral motor symptoms at the onset. While motor symptoms such as tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity, and postural instability are the signs of PD, nonmotor symptoms also significantly impact the patient's quality of life. One such nonmotor symptom is auditory dysfunction, which has been increasingly recognized as a feature of PD. OBJECTIVES: Our purpose is to evaluate auditory impairment in PD patients and its asymmetry as a biomarker to differentiate PD from other neurodegenerative disorde

The impact of bipolar spectrum disorders on professional functioning: A systematic review.

AIMS: The impact of bipolar spectrum (BS) disorders on professional functioning has not been systematically reviewed yet. Since even subsyndromal symptoms may disturb functioning, the determination of the prognostic value of the spectrum of bipolarity for employment seems extremely relevant. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of BS disorders on professional functioning. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of the literature (namely, cohort and cross-sectional studies) investigating a link between BS disorders and employment was performed in accordance with PRISMA guidelines.
