Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD) in the U.S. and France: Nationality and gender effects and relations to drive for thinness and alcohol use.

OBJECTIVE: Food and Alcohol Disturbance (FAD), colloquially coined "drunkorexia," is a set of behaviors that encompasses restriction of calories, over-exercise, and other compensatory behaviors before, during, or after alcohol use to offset caloric intake or maximize intoxication. To date, this phenomenon has not been compared in a cross-cultural sample. METHOD: The Compensatory Eating and Behaviors Related to Alcohol Consumption Scale (CEBRACS), Eating Disorder Inventory - Drive for Thinness Subscale (EDI-DT) and Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test of Consumption (AUDIT-C) were complet

Alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and the risk of subtypes of head-neck cancer: results from the Netherlands Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Prospective data on alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking and risk of head-neck cancer (HNC) subtypes, i.e. oral cavity cancer (OCC), oro-/hypopharyngeal cancer (OHPC), and laryngeal cancer (LC), are limited. We investigated these associations within the second largest prospective study on this topic so far, the Netherlands Cohort Study. METHODS: 120,852 participants completed a questionnaire on diet and other cancer risk factors in 1986. After 17.3 years of follow-up, 395 HNC (110 OCC, 83 OHPC, and 199 LC) cases and 4288 subcohort members were available for case-cohort analysis

Effects of abstinence on brain morphology in alcoholism: a MRI study.

Chronic alcohol abuse leads to morphological changes of the brain. We investigated if these volumetric changes are reversible after a period of abstinence. For this reason 41 male and 15 female alcohol patients underwent MRI-scanning after in-patient detoxification (baseline) entering alcoholism treatment programs, and between 6 and 9 months later (follow-up), in a phase of convalescence. Additionally, 29 male and 16 female control subjects were examined. The MRI-scans were delineated and the resulting regions of interest, volumes of lateral ventricles and prefrontal lobes were expressed relat

Alcohol and cognitive performance: a longitudinal study of older Japanese Americans. The Kame Project.

BACKGROUND: Recent data demonstrate that moderate consumption of alcohol (13-52 grams of ethanol per day) may be beneficial to cognitive functioning among older adults. METHODS: Longitudinal growth curve analyses controlling for baseline age, body mass index (BMI), education/income, migrant status, smoking, history of diagnosed stroke, hypertension, coronary heart disease (CHD), depression, diabetes and stroke (time-varying) were used to examine the relationship between alcohol consumption, gender and cognitive performance over an 8-year follow-up period. The sample included 1624 Japanese Ame

Imagery and associations of adolescents reflected in their behaviour.

In adolescent girls, by means of imagery and associations it was studied, which images and associations produce concepts expressing activities which, on the one hand, protect and promote health (exercises, use of seat belts, and condoms) and, on the other hand, represent a health risk (drinking beer and liquor, cigarette smoking, marijuana smoking and cocain use, and sexual intercourse) and how they influence the respondents' behaviour. Nursing school students were interviewed by means of a questionnaire published by the Oregon Research Institute, USA. The respondents gave a total number of 15

Demographic, reproductive, medical, and environmental factors in relation to gastroschisis.

To identify risk factors for gastroschisis other than drug use in pregnancy, an analysis of data collected in a case-control surveillance program of birth defects (1976-1990) was conducted. Drug use is considered in Werler et al., Teratology, 45:361-367, 1992. Maternal demographic, reproductive, and medical factors, and first trimester environmental exposures, were compared between 76 gastroschisis cases and 2,581 malformed controls. A strong inverse association was found for maternal age: relative to women 30 years or older, relative risks for 25-29, 20-24, and less than 20-year-old women wer

Frequency, course and correlates of alcohol use from adolescence to young adulthood in a Swiss community survey.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have analyzed the frequency of alcohol use across time from adolescence to young adulthood and its outcome in young adulthood. A Swiss longitudinal multilevel assessment project using various measures of psychopathology and psychosocial variables allowed for the study of the frequency and correlates of alcohol use so that this developmental trajectory may be better understood. METHOD: Alcohol use was studied by a questionnaire in a cohort of N = 593 subjects who had been assessed at three times between adolescence and young adulthood within the Zurich Psychology and Ps

The long-term cost-effectiveness of improving alcohol abstinence with adjuvant acamprosate.

A computer model was developed with decision analysis software to explore the long-term clinical and economic outcomes of alcohol abstinence maintenance with either standard counselling therapy or standard therapy plus 48 weeks of adjuvant acamprosate in detoxified alcoholic patients. Important complications of alcoholism were modelled using Markov processes, and included relapse (return to drinking), alcohol-related hepatic disease, acute and chronic pancreatitis, acute and chronic gastritis, oropharyngeal carcinoma, oesophageal carcinoma, alcoholic cardiomyopathy, alcohol-related peripheral

Increased REM sleep density at admission predicts relapse by three months in primary alcoholics with a lifetime diagnosis of secondary depression.

BACKGROUND: Having previously reported that 3-month relapse was associated with increased admission REM pressure in nondepressed primary alcoholics, we hypothesized that baseline polysomnography would predict outcome in primary alcoholics with a lifetime diagnosis of secondary depression. METHODS: Twenty-one primary alcoholics with secondary depression received polysomnography and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale during the first and fourth weeks of a 1-month inpatient alcohol treatment program. Exclusion criteria included serious illness, current major alcohol withdrawal symptoms, other

The interaction between alcohol and the residual effects of thiopental anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: During ambulatory surgery, barbiturates, such as thiopental, may impair psychomotor performance several hours after administration. It was hypothesized that if patients drink alcohol 4 h after thiopental injection, the increase in psychomotor impairment would be greater than that seen after alcohol ingestion alone. METHODS: Twelve healthy men volunteered to participate in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study with a Latin square design. On each testing day, the subjects received intravenous injections of either 5 mg/kg of 2.5% thiopental or an equal volume of saline

Investigating the trend of adolescent alcohol use: a Bayesian hierarchical linear analysis.

AIMS: Traditional longitudinal models of adolescent alcohol use often assume that within-person variability-the extent to which an individual's alcohol use fluctuates over time-is the same for everyone. However, in the real world, some adolescents show relatively stable patterns of use, while others fluctuate substantially across different measurement waves. To capture these individual differences, the present study applies a Bayesian hierarchical linear modeling approach that allows between-person differences in within-person variability. METHODS: This study compared 16 model variants that c

The neurobiological cravings signature (NCS) as a predictive neuromarker of clinical outcomes in alcohol use disorder.

The Neural Craving Signature (NCS), a machine learning derived neuroimaging biomarker, differentiates individuals with from those without substance use disorders (SUDs), but has not been evaluated for predicting clinical outcomes. In a secondary analysis, we applied the NCS to fMRI cue-reactivity data from 39 participants in a published, negative RCT of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). NCS scores predicted craving [Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS)], both at the time of fMRI (R 2 = 0.29, 95%, CI [0.27, 0.73], t(36) = 3.86, p = 0.0005), and dur

Chronic Alcohol Consumption Induces Irreversible and Heterogeneous Pancreatic Steatosis in Men: An MRI-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Chronic alcohol consumption is a recognized cause of pancreatic steatosis, though its imaging characteristics in individuals remain undefined. This study investigated the effect of chronic alcohol intake on the pancreatic fat content and distribution in a male population and assessed the impact of abstinence. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 140 male alcohol drinkers (who consumed >20 g ethanol/day for >5 years) and 142 male non-drinkers were recruited. The pancreatic fat fraction (FF) was quantified using T1- and T2*-corrected double-echo chemical shift magnetic resonance i

Relationships between state-level general population alcohol policies and birth outcomes: Results from 1972-2019 vital statistics.

BACKGROUND: Research has found that policies that single out pregnant people's alcohol consumption are mostly ineffective. Identifying alternative approaches - for example, general population alcohol policies - that can reduce adverse effects of pregnant people's alcohol consumption is essential. Here, we examine how U.S. state-level alcohol policies regarding grocery store and gas station sales, Sunday sales, Blood Alcohol Concentration limits for driving, and government monopolies relate to birth outcomes. METHODS: Outcome data came from the 1972-2019 U.S. Vital Statistics System birth cert

The inter-related effects of alcohol use severity and sleep deficiency on semantic processing in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Both alcohol misuse and sleep deficiency are associated with deficits in semantic processing. However, alcohol misuse and sleep deficiency are frequently comorbid and their inter-related effects on semantic processing as well as the underlying neural mechanisms remain to be investigated. METHODS: We curated the Human Connectome Project data of 973 young adults (508 women) to examine the neural correlates of semantic processing in link with the severity of alcohol use and sleep deficiency. The latter were each evaluated using the first principal component (PC1) of principal compone

Smoking-, Alcohol-, and Age-Related Alterations of Blood Monocyte Subsets and Circulating CD4/CD8 T Cells in Head and Neck Cancer.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) represents a heterogeneous malignant disease of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Although cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse, and aging are well-established associated factors for HNSCC, their respective influence on immunologic alterations of monocyte subsets or T-cell compositions in the peripheral blood has not yet been fully unveiled. Using flow cytometry, whole blood measurements of CD14/CD16 monocyte subsets and analyses of T-cell subsets in isolated PBMC fractions were carried out in 64 HNSCC patients in view of their tobacco and alcohol

Association between alcohol consumption and osteoarthritis prevalence in Korea as assessed by the alcohol use disorders identification test (AUDIT): a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) holds significance as a highly prevalent disorder in elderly populations. Various studies have been conducted on the association between alcohol consumption and OA, but the results have often been conflicting. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and OA in a large-scale sample representative of the Korean population. METHODS: Among the 25,534 participants surveyed in the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2010-2012), 7165 individuals aged ≥50 who responded to drinking-related items wer
