Verbal learning and memory in children with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) were administered the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version, a word list learning task that assesses immediate and delayed recall and recognition memory. When compared with matched control children, the children with FAS had difficulty learning and recalling the words after a delay period and tended to make an increased number of intrusion and perseverative errors. In addition, they had difficulty discriminating target words from distracter words and made more false-positive errors on recognition testing. Some of these deficits persisted

Impairments of number processing induced by prenatal alcohol exposure.

Prenatal alcohol exposure causes a variety of cognitive deficits, notably in mathematics and higher order processes such as abstraction. An exploratory battery was developed to examine specific types of number processing impairments in 29 adolescent and adult patients with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE) relative to controls matched for age, gender, and educational level. The battery included 11 tests: number reading and writing, exact calculation (addition, multiplication, subtraction), approximate calculation (selecting a plausible result for an operation), numbe

Paediatric and ophthalmologic observations in offspring of alcohol abusing mothers.

The offspring of nine women who had abused alcohol and drugs during pregnancy were studied. Of the 30 children, 10 had fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Ophthalmological impairments associated with FAS--impaired vision, optic nerve hypoplasia, cataract, increased tortuosity of retinal vessels--were common. The severity of teratogenic lesions varied among the children and was often related to the level of abuse during pregnancy. Most women were unable to take care of their children during periods of substance abuse. All children with FAS/FAE had learning difficulties.

[Naloxone in ethanol overdose after alcoholization of hepatic metastasis].

The authors report a case of ethanol-induced coma treated successfully with naloxone, in a subject undergoing liver metastasis alcoholization. A dose of ethanol 95 degrees (150 ml) was injected intraoperatively into the hepatic tumor with ultrasound monitoring, in a 55-year old woman which underwent mastectomy two years ago for breast cancer. At the end of operation that went on for 128 minutes, the patient maintained during surgery with standard NLA II anaesthesia did not awake. Toxicologic testing of blood showed an alcohol concentration of 1.9 g/l. Intra-venous naloxone 2 mg was given in bo

Acute alcoholic pancreatitis does not lead to complete recovery.

The aim of the study was to determine the late outcome of acute alcoholic pancreatitis (a.a.p.), as assessed by clinical examination, functional tests and imaging techniques. 47 patients, 4-7 years after a.a.p. of moderate clinical course underwent a secretin-cerulein test (SCT), glucose tolerance test (GTT), ultrasound (US) and computed tomography (CT) of the pancreas. Exocrine pancreatic function impairment was found in 63.8%, glucose impaired tolerance (GIT)-in 12.8% overt diabetes-in 17.0%. GIT and overt diabetes were found only in patients with severe exocrine function impairment requirin

Alcohol consumption modifies the total lung capacity in smokers.

Smoking-related airflow obstruction can develop with or without emphysema. Moderate alcohol consumption has been suggested to diminish the risk of centrilobular emphysema caused by smoking. Our aim was to study the influence of total energy and nutrient (protein, fat, carbohydrate and alcohol) intake on smoking-related emphysema. Lung function and nutrient intake including alcohol consumption were recorded at age of 68 years in 478 men as part of the population study 'Men Born in 1914' in Malmö, Sweden. In nonsmokers (n = 88) and ex-smokers (n = 223), there were no significant relationships be

Cytokine levels in acute alcoholic hepatitis: a sequential study.

Chronic alcoholic liver disease is associated with several immunological alterations: depressed T-cell function, low serum gamma-interferon, and high serum tumour necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and interleukin levels. Therefore, macrophage activity seems to be enhanced. Some cytokines, such as TNF-alpha, exert adverse effects on chronic alcoholic liver disease, so that protracted activation of macrophages with continuous TNF-alpha production may aggravate alcoholic hepatitis. Based on these facts we have sequentially determined serum levels of TNF-alpha, 1 beta interleukin (IL-1 beta), gamma-inte

Screening and diagnosis of "alcohol abuse and dependence" in older adults.

A literature review reveals that research is warranted to improve screening for "alcohol abuse" in older adults and women. An examination of diagnostic criteria for "alcohol abuse dependence" reveals that older adults provide unique challenges to classification systems. There is a need to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of several new screening instruments for the identification of "alcohol abuse" in the elderly. Routine screening of elderly and women presenting in primary care settings should be a priority for researchers and clinicians.

[The effect of reaferon on the opioid systems of chronically alcoholized rats].

Chronic alcoholic intoxication is followed by a fall in 3H-(D-ala-2,D-leu-5)-enkephalin affinity of mu-opioid receptors with their unchanged concentrations in the rat brain cortex, by reductions in the tissue and plasma levels of beta-endorphine and met-enkephalin. A daily administration of reaferon in a dose of 10,000 IU during two fortnights completely restored both the binding affinity of the receptors and the concentrations of the peptides tested: those of beta-endorphine in the adenohypophysis and plasma and those of metenkephalin in the adrenals and plasma.

[Application of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test in heads of the family].

The habit of alcohol ingestion was examined in major caretakers of extreme poverty families who live in a county of the southern area of Santiago, Chile. For this purpose we used the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) validated in Chile. This test allows the disrimination between normal and abnormal alcohol drinkers. In this study the prevalence for abnormal drinkers was 40.3% with a 46.2% of prevalence if the major caretaker was the male parent and a 3.3% of prevalence if the major caretaker was a female one. This prevalence was studied associated with the following variables: socioeco
