The role of psychological factors and serum zinc, folate and vitamin B12 levels in the aetiology of trichodynia: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous dysaesthesia syndromes are characterized by chronic cutaneous symptoms without objective findings, and their aetiologies are obscure. Trichodynia describes pain and a stinging sensation of the scalp related to diffuse alopecia. AIMS: To determine the prevalence rate of trichodynia in patients with diffuse alopecia; to assess the serum zinc, folate and vitamin B(12) levels; and to investigate the significance of psychological disorders in these patients. METHODS: The study comprised 91 patients with a diagnosis of diffuse hair loss and 74 healthy controls. Patients were

Culprits of Medication-Induced Telogen Effluvium, Part 1.

Telogen effluvium (TE) is a common clinical consequence of medication-related alopecia. The inciting cause of TE may be difficult to identify due to delays in clinically apparent hair loss. Because medication-induced TE is a nonscarring alopecia that typically is reversible, appropriate management requires identification of the underlying triggering medication and cessation of it, if possible. In part 1 of this series, we review the existing literature on medication-induced TE with a focus on systemic retinoids, antifungal agents, and psychotropic medications.

Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lassueur Syndrome with Mucosal Involvement: A Rare Case.

Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lassueur syndrome (GLPLS) is a type of lichen planopilaris. It mainly affects females aged 40-60 years. It is characterized by the triad of patchy cicatricial alopecia of the scalp, noncicatricial alopecia of the axilla and groin and a follicular spinous papule on the body, scalp, or both. The diagnosis is based on clinicopathological correlation. Different modalities of treatment are available with unsatisfactory responses, so early diagnosis is necessary to prevent progression and scarring alopecia. A case of GLPLS with classical features on clinical, dermoscopic, and

Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lassueur syndrome.

Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lassueur syndrome (GLPLS) traditionally describes patients with a triad of a multifocal cicatricial alopecia of the scalp, noncicatricial alopecia of the axillae and groin, and a lichenoid follicular eruption. The entity has caused much controversy with respect to both etiology and clinical definition. We present a patient with lichen planopilaris, lichen planus pigmentosus, and nonscarring alopecia of the genitals, who is reminiscent of GLPLS. Recent work shows evidence for autoimmunity in GLPLS. Further elucidation of underlying mechanisms can improve categorization an

[Pseudopelade Brocq--possible sequela of stage III borrelia infection?].

The differential diagnosis of cicatricial alopecia includes a wide variety of diseases. A 60-years-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of an unsuccessfully treated, progressive pseudopelede of Brocq. Further examination revealed an borreliosis (Stage III). After 3 weeks of treatment with intravenous Cefotaxime (Claforan), follow-up examination one year later show an complete arrest of the alopecia. This first description of cicatricial alopecia to be causally related to borreliosis Stage III extends the differential diagnosis of pseudopelede of Brocq and offers a curative therapy.

A case of Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lasseur syndrome.

Graham-Little-Piccardi-Lasseur Syndrome (GLPLS) is a variant of lichen planopilaris, which is characterized by progressive cicatricial alopecia of scalp, non-cicatricial alopecia of axillae and pubic regions, and keratosis pilaris-like follicular papules over trunk and extremities. GLPLS is a disease of unknown etiology. However, recent reports support a central role for a T-cell-mediated immune response in the pathogenesis of GLPLS. Besides, although GLPLS is believed to occur sporadically, a genetic predisposition also has been implicated in the pathogenesis. On the other hand, GLPLS typical

Areata-Like Lupus as a Clinical Manifestation of Cutaneous Lupus Erythematosus.

INTRODUCTION: Lupus erythematosus (LE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that frequently causes hair loss and scalp lesions. Hair loss can be scarring and nonscarring, diffuse, or patchy. The nonscarring patchy alopecia is usually related to systemic LE (SLE) and may simulate alopecia areata (AA), reason why it is named areata-like lupus. Our case was diagnosed with areata-like lupus but did not meet criteria for SLE. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old woman presented with irregular nonscarring patchy alopecia in the temporal and frontoparietal scalp. Trichoscopy showed exclamation mark hairs, vellus h

Role of vitamin D in hair loss: A short review.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D, a vitamin and hormone, plays an important role in dermatology and dermatotherapeutics, due to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, and regulation of keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation. It also affects the hair cycle, and its role in hair loss is under constant research. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to give a brief overview of vitamin D biology within the hair follicle, role in the etiopathogenesis, and rationale for supplementation in various alopecias. METHODS: A PubMed literature search was performed to review relevant current literature

Hyperplasia of the subcutaneous adipose tissue is the primary histopathologic abnormality in lipedematous scalp.

A 51-year-old white woman presented with thickening of the scalp located at the vertex and left lateral occiput without hair abnormalities or alopecia. Skin biopsies of the thickened scalp showed thickening of the subcutaneous tissue with proliferation of mature subcutaneous fat cells but no signs of inflammation or hair abnormalities. During 2.5 years of follow-up, scalp thickening progressed over the entire hair-bearing scalp and persisted without signs of further progression at 3.5 year follow-up. Lipedematous scalp is an extremely rare diagnosis. It is defined by a thickening of the subcut

Efficacy of Intralesional Triamcinolone Acetonide Combined With Cryotherapy Compared to Intralesional Triamcinolone Acetonide Alone in Treating Limited Patchy Alopecia Areata of the Scalp and Face: A Prospective, Randomized, Within-Subject Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss. The disease occurs in both sexes, with no racial or age-related predilection. Many patients experience spontaneous improvement and regrowth of hair, while some patients are resistant to common therapies and others progress to more severe forms of alopecia. The primary treatment for patchy and limited alopecia of the scalp and face is intralesional triamcinolone injection. Previous studies have also reported the efficacy of cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), which promotes hair regrowth through

[Hereditary pseudovitamin-D-deficiency rickets with alopecia as a consequence of extreme resistance of target organs to 1.25-(OH)2-cholecalciferol. Therapeutic progress in another disorder of vitamin-D-metabolism (author's transl)].

We report about a pair of Turkish siblings suffering from alopecia and severe rickets. In the elder sister we could show the causal role of extreme resistance of target organs to 1.25-(OH)2-cholecalciferol. The birth of a brother who developed the same symptoms together with two other similar cases in siblings recently published by other authors, made it possible to recognize the disorder as a typical syndrome-like entity, based on a hereditary defect. By successful administration of excessive (and so-far not previously published) doses of Vitamin-D3 a way for therapeutic progress in this new

The role of SARS-CoV-2 infection and its vaccines in various types of hair loss.

The prevalence of hair loss has increased during COVID-19. In this study, we review the current literature on incidence and characteristics of various types of COVID-19-related and COVID-19-vaccine- related hair loss including telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, friction alopecia and anagen effluvium. Regarding most of them, the more severe the infection, the more profound and prolonged the course of alopecia. However, the most important issue is reassuring the patients of the non-serious nature of this complication, since psychological support is the most important factor in the earlier resol

Congenital atrichia associated with situs inversus and mesocardia.

Congenital alopecia includes a broad differential diagnosis and presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the physician. Congenital atrichia is a rare form of irreversible alopecia that is usually inherited as an autosomal recessive pattern. We report a 2-year-old male child presenting with total alopecia of scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, and body hair since birth. The child had cardiac malposition with situs inversus of the viscera. Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen revealed median position of the heart with transposition of abdominal viscera. To our knowledge, this is the f

Multifocal scalp hair loss.

Cutaneous metastases from internal cancer are relatively uncommon in clinical practice, but they are very important to recognize. Metastases of skin may be a herald sign in the diagnosis of internal malignancy. Scalp metastasis from breast carcinoma is reported but it is rare. We describe a 42-year-old woman who presented with three foci of alopecia on her scalp resembling alopecia areata. She was a known case of breast carcinoma 10 years prior. Radical mastectomy and total chemotherapy was done 8 years prior. An incision biopsy of an alopecic patch was done revealing metastases of breast carc
