Treatment of patients with acute recurrent tonsillitis due to group A beta-haemolytic streptococci: a prospective randomized study comparing penicillin and amoxycillin/clavulanate potassium.

The failure of penicillin to eradicate Group A beta-haemolytic streptococcal tonsillitis may be caused by beta-lactamase producing bacteria in the tonsillar tissue. A prospective randomized clinical study comparing the efficacy of penicillin-V potassium with amoxycillin plus clavulanate potassium (Augmentin) in the treatment of acute episodes of recurrent streptococcal tonsillitis was conducted. Twenty children were included in each group. Surface tonsillar cultures were obtained before therapy, ten days after termination of therapy, and then once every two months for up to one year. beta-Lact

Triple-drug combination therapy versus six-month proton pump inhibitor monotherapy in non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter eradication, and hyperacid environment preference of Helicobacter suis: a clinical study.

BACKGROUND: At present, eradication regimens for non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter (NHPH) have not been established yet. We investigated effectiveness of the standard triple-drug combination therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication and of a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) monotherapy in eradication of NHPH. METHODS: Subjects were the patients who were diagnosed with NHPH-infected gastritis based on microscopic findings, helical-shaped organisms obviously larger than Helicobacter pylori, in the gastric mucosal specimens using Giemsa staining at Kenwakai Hospital between November 2010 and Sep

Treatment of Helicobacter pylori with potassium competitive acid blockers: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infects over half the global population, causing gastrointestinal diseases like dyspepsia, gastritis, duodenitis, peptic ulcers, G-MALT lymphoma, and gastric adenocarcinoma. Eradicating H. pylori is crucial for treating and preventing these conditions. While conventional proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-based triple therapy is effective, there's growing interest in longer acid suppression therapies. Potassium competitive acid blocker (P-CAB) triple and dual therapy are new regimens for H. pylori eradication. Initially used in Asian populations, vonoprazan

The efficacy of blueberry and grape seed extract combination on triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori eradication: a randomised controlled trial.

Helicobacter pylori is a major risk factor for gastritis, gastric ulcers and gastric cancer. Traditional therapy with proton pump inhibitor and antibiotics is regarded as optimal for H. pylori eradication whereas, the eradication rate is unsatisfactory. Studies have reported that cranberry may inhibit H. pylori adhesion to the human gastric mucus but lack of other berry extracts have been evaluated in clinical study. Thus, a 9-week add-on randomised controlled trial was conducted to explore the impact of blueberry and grape seed extract (BGE) combinations traditional therapy for H. pylori erad

Ozena in Immigrants of Differing Backgrounds.

Ozena, or atrophic rhinitis, is a chronic nasal process seen in Africa, India, and the Middle East. It is marked by the triad of fetid nasal discharge, crusting, and atrophy, and is often associated with Klebsiella infection. We present cases of ozena with nasal Klebsiella in three unrelated patients, including two east African children and one Saudi adult. All three patients grew Klebsiella species in culture and required prolonged treatment with multiple methodologies, including antibiotics, saline rinses, and surgical debridement. They differed greatly in time from presentation to diagnosis

Melioidosis in a patient on monoclonal antibody therapy for psoriatic arthritis.

Melioidosis is caused by the environmental bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei and can present with severe sepsis. Predisposing risk factors are present in 80% of cases. Monoclonal antibodies are increasingly prescribed for varied medical conditions. This report describes the first known case of melioidosis in a patient whose only risk factor for disease is treatment with a monoclonal antibody. Prescribers of monoclonal antibodies and other immunosuppressants should ensure that their patients are aware of the potential risk of melioidosis prior to travel and the precautions that should be take

Monotherapy versus combination therapy.

The science of antibiotic therapy for infectious diseases continues to evolve. In many instances where empiric coverage is necessary, treatment with more than one agent is considered prudent. If an etiology is identified, antibiotics are modified based on culture and susceptibility data. Even when the organism is known, more than one antibiotic may be needed. Decisions about antibiotics should be made after assessments of pertinent clinical information, laboratory and microbiology information, ease of administration, patient compliance, potential adverse effects, cost, and available evidence s

[Disseminated actinomycosis].

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a patient suffering from disseminated actinomycosis. CASE REPORT: A fifty-two year old man, who was both a heavy smoker and an alcoholic, was admitted to hospital with confusion associated with a pseudo-tumoral right upper lobe pneumonia. Brain computed tomography was normal on the day of admission but when repeated fifteen days later four lesions were seen with appearances suspicious of metastatic malignant disease. The isolation of Actinomyces odontolyticus in the bronchoalveolar lavage culture and the absence of evidence for neoplastic disease despite ex

Effect of Helicobacter pylori eradicated therapy on water gastric emptying in patients with active duodenal ulcer.

Efflux pump inhibitors are of great interest since their use as adjuvants of bacterial chemotherapy can increase the intracellular concentrations of the antibiotics and assist in the battle against the rising of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this work, we have described the mode of action of the 2-phenylquinoline efflux inhibitor (4-(2-(piperazin-1-yl)ethoxy)-2-(4-propoxyphenyl) quinolone - PQQ4R), against Escherichia coli, by studding its efflux inhibitory ability, its synergistic activity in combination with antibiotics, and compared its effects with the inhibitors phenyl-arginine-β-naph

[Anthrax in the era of biowarfare].

UNLABELLED: THE CONDITIONS OF INFECTION: Anthrax is a zoonosis due to Bacillus anthracis. Human contamination usually results from contact with an infected animal or product, or direct exposure to the bacteria. The latter represents one of the principle agents that can be used in biowarfare by spraying the spores. VARIOUS POSSIBILITIES: The inhaled form of the disease, characterised by hemorrhagic necrosis of the mediastinum adenopathies and septic shock, is the form that would probably be observed during a terrorist attack. The cutaneous and digestive forms are also possible. EVOLUTION: The
