The frequency of the psychiatric symptoms in the patients with dyspepsia at a university hospital.

OBJECTIVE: According to the psychiatric hypothesis, the symptoms of dyspepsia may be due to depression, anxiety or a somatization disorder. We investigated the frequency of psychiatric symptoms in patients undergoing endoscopic procedures with dyspepsia, either with or without pathological findings, and compared this with control subjects without dyspeptic symptoms. METHODS: Ninety patients with dyspeptic symptoms and 90 control subjects participated in the study. Both the patients and the controls were asked to complete a questionnaire about socio-demographic characteristics, the Turkish ver

Unique relations among anxiety sensitivity factors and anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation.

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is composed of three lower-order dimensions, cognitive concerns, physical concerns, and social concerns. We examined the relations between AS dimensions using a more adequate assessment of subscales (ASI-3) than has previously been used, and measures of anxiety and mood disorders as well as suicidal ideation in a sample of 256 (M age = 37.10 years, SD = 16.40) treatment-seeking individuals using structural equation modeling. AS cognitive concerns was uniquely associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), major depressive disor

Adults with adverse childhood experiences report greater coronavirus anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Adults with early life adversity exhibit heightened response to threat signals in the environment, which makes them vulnerable to developing stress-related mental health problems, including anxiety disorders. Yet, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adults who have experienced early life adversity is understudied. Recently, researchers have characterized dysfunctional cognitions about the pandemic, which are associated with negative mental health outcomes, as coronavirus anxiety. We conducted a study to examine the relation between exposure to early life adversity, perceived thr…

Clinical Considerations around the Development of Boys and Mental Health Outcomes in the Education System.

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 7 youth ages 10 to 19 years old experience mental health disorders, including anxiety, depression, and behavioral difficulties. There are sex biases in prevalence rates of mental health disorders; females are more likely diagnosed with anxiety and depression, while males are more often diagnosed with behavioral disorders. There is a reciprocal interaction between the decline in educational outcomes and mental health among young males. This article highlights the intersection between psychiatric disorders, gender norms, and educational outcomes a

From Childhood Woes to Adult Blues: Unmasking the Role of Early Traumas, P2X7 Receptor, and Neuroinflammation in Anxiety and Depression.

Early-life stress may increase the risk of neuropsychiatric disorders via immune activation. While the purinergic signaling pathway is implicated in psychiatric disorders, the specific role of the P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) in anxiety, depression, and childhood trauma still requires further clarification. Upon chronic stress, excessive ATP release activates purinergic P2X7R signalling in the brain contributing to long-lasting neuroinflammation, which potentially promotes the development of psychiatric disorders. There is also a putative link between the P2X7 receptor gene, located on chromosome 12q

Examining attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and related behavioral disorders by fertility treatment exposure in a prospective cohort.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether underlying infertility and mode of conception are associated with childhood behavioral disorders. METHODS: Oversampling on fertility treatment exposure using vital records, the Upstate KIDS Study followed 2057 children (of 1754 mothers) from birth to 11 years. Type of fertility treatment and time to pregnancy (TTP) were self-reported. Mothers completed annual questionnaires reporting symptomology, diagnoses, and medications at 7-11 years of age. The information identified children with probable attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety or depression, and c

Functional and psychiatric vestibular disorders.

Behavioral factors have long been recognized as affecting spatial orientation and balance function. Neuroanatomic and neurophysiologic studies conducted worldwide over the last 30 years have substantially advanced our knowledge about the inherently strong connectivity among threat/anxiety, vestibular, visual, and somatosensory systems in the brain. Clinical investigations have shed greater light on the nature of functional and psychiatric disorders that manifest or magnify vestibular morbidity. Concepts of these syndromes have changed over 150 years. Even their nomenclature has had different m

Vulnerability to psychopathology in nicotine-dependent smokers: an epidemiologic study of young adults.

OBJECTIVE: In a previous article the authors reported associations between nicotine dependence and psychiatric disorders in a community sample of young adults. Increased lifetime rates of major depression and anxiety disorders were found in persons with DSM-III-R nicotine dependence but not in nondependent smokers. The purpose of the present study was to examine the associations of nicotine dependence with four measures of psychologic vulnerability to nonpsychotic psychiatric disorders. METHOD: A randomly chosen group of 1,007 21- to 30-year-old members of a large health maintenance organizat…

A preliminary naturalistic clinical case series study of the feasibility and impact of interoceptive exposure for eating disorders.

Recent literature suggests that individuals with eating disorders demonstrate altered interoceptive processing, which may relate to the maintenance of symptoms and thus represent a salient treatment target. Adopting treatment techniques effective for other conditions characterized by disturbed interoceptive processes (e.g., anxiety disorders) could aid in improving the outcomes of psychological interventions for eating disorders. The current investigation was a naturalistic case series (N = 4) that examined adjunctive interoceptive exposure (IE) for eating disorders, with an emphasis on evalua…

Increasing Mental Health Screening in Pediatric Subspecialty Clinics: An Improvement Project at Brooke Army Medical Center.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health screening allows for the early identification of patients at risk of mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. The Defense Health Administration Procedures Manual 6025.01 established that patients older than 12 years of age should receive annual mental health screening assessing suicidality risk with a standardized screening tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To improve rates of mental health screening in this at-risk population, an A3 Lean approach to quality improvement was undertaken in the Pediatric Subspecialty Clinics at Brooke Army Medical Center. Mental Health Disorders and Coping Strategies in Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study in Southeastern Mexico.

Mental health disorders are relatively common in the general population and were already an important issue for the healthcare sector before COVID-19. COVID-19, being a worldwide crucial event and evidently a great stressor has increased both the prevalence and incidence of these. Therefore, it is evident that COVID-19 and mental health disorders are closely related. Moreover, several coping strategies exist to endure said disorders such as depression and anxiety, which are used by the population to confront stressors, and healthcare workers are not the exception. This was an analytical cross-

Attachment styles in patients with avoidant personality disorder compared with social phobia.

OBJECTIVES: Avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) and social phobia (SP) are common, closely related conditions. Little is known about the underlying processes related to the social discomfort of subjects with AvPD and SP. Both disorders are associated with interpersonal problems. An attachment perspective may shed light on similarities and differences in close relationships between the disorders. The aim of the study was to compare self-reported attachment styles in patients with AvPD and SP. We expected that patients with AvPD would have more attachment anxiety and avoidance and more often a
