Epidemiological studies suggest a viral etiology in approximately 1% of patients presenting with acute arthritis. The arthritogenic effect of viral infections may be related to viral invasion of synovial cells, the cellular and humoral immune response to viral antigens or by induction of autoimmunity. Viral arthritis can mimic rheumatoid arthritis by presenting as a symmetrical polyarticular disease often accompanied by a rash and influenza-like symptoms. Serological testing for pathogen-specific IgM and IgG antibodies is frequently performed for establishing a viral etiology of arthritis. Vir

BACKGROUND: The Streptococcus bovis group (SBG) is a well-known cause of endocarditis, but its role in osteoarticular infections (OAIs) has not been well described.
METHODS: We analyzed all patients with OAIs by SBG diagnosed in our hospital (1988-2014). We selected those cases with septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, as defined according to clinical, microbiological, and imaging studies. Identification of the strains was performed by using the API 20 Strep and the GP card of the Vitek 2 system, and confirmed the identification by molecular methods. In addition, we reviewed the literature to

INTRODUCTION: The ideal treatment of the destructive septic arthritis of the hip joint remains controversial. The aim of the present retrospective study was to report on our experience about the use of antibiotic-loaded cement spacers in the treatment of destructive bacterial coxitis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 22 consecutive patients (11 male, 11 female, mean age 59.7 years) have been treated with a two-stage protocol and implantation of an antibiotic-loaded cement spacer. All patients' records have been retrospectively evaluated with regard to comorbidities/predisposing factors, infection cause

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint is rare. It can be associated with serious complications such as osteomyelitis, chest wall abscess, and mediastinitis. In this report, we describe a case of an otherwise healthy adult with septic arthritis of the sternoclavicular joint with chest wall abscess.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old Japanese man presented to our hospital complaining of pain and erythema near the right sternoclavicular joint. Despite 1 week of oral antibiotics, his symptoms did not improve. Computed tomography revealed an abscess with air around the right pec

Acute leukemia in children presents with various clinical manifestations that mimic orthopaedic conditions. The association of septic arthritis of the elbow with acute leukemia is very rare, and the correct diagnosis of acute leukemia is often established only after treatment of the septic arthritis. In this article, we present a three-year-old child patient with elbow septic arthritis related to acute leukemia, diagnosed promptly by bone marrow aspiration on the same day as emergency surgical debridement of the septic elbow joint due to the maintenance of a high index of suspicion, and treate

OBJECTIVE: Prosthetic joint infections (PJI) may be cured in selected patients with debridement and prosthesis retention. We aimed to identify predictors of failure to better target patients most likely to benefit from this conservative strategy.
METHODS: Observational study of patients presenting with PJI initially treated at our hospital with debridement between 2008 and 2011, with>6 months of post-treatment follow-up.
RESULTS: Sixty consecutive patients presenting with PJI (hip, n=34; knee, n=26) fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Failures (n=20, 33%), predefined as persistence of PJI sign

PURPOSE: To determine whether the outcome after septic arthritis after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is inferior compared with uncomplicated ACLR when treated promptly by use of a standard protocol.
METHODS: At Capio Artro Clinic, 4,384 primary ACLRs were performed during 2001-2009. All patients with postoperative septic arthritis were retrospectively reviewed, and 43 met the inclusion criteria. Twenty-seven patients agreed to re-examination (infection group) and were compared with 27 matched patients with uncomplicated ACLR (control group). The mean follow-up period was 60

Hip problems in children are relatively rare but usually serious, potentially causing lifelong disability. Early diagnosis and treatment is, therefore, mandatory. The aim of this review is to discuss the most frequent diseases of the hip from birth to adolescence. The different affections are relatively closely related to age periods. After birth and in infancy, developmental dislocation of the hip (DDH) and septic arthritis are more prominent. DDH is not always present at birth and should regularly be checked for in the first 6 months of life. Septic arthritis is an emergency and should be ad

UNLABELLED: Although total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an effective and successful procedure, the outcome is occasionally compromised by complications including periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). Accurate and early diagnosis is the first step in effectively managing patients with PJI. At the present time, diagnosis remains dependent on clinical judgment and reliance on standard clinical tests including serologic tests, analysis of aspirated joint fluid, and interpretation of intraoperative tissue and fluid test results. Although reports regarding sensitivity and specificity of all diagnostic

The aims of this study were to determine factors that cause a leg-length discrepancy (LLD) to the extent that correction is indicated after treatment in developmental dysplasia of the hip and determine whether the LLD may be treated with a percutaneous epiphysiodesis. Twelve children were included in this study. The factors which caused LLD were avascular necrosis, femoral shortening and varus at reduction, and septic arthritis. Percutaneous epiphysiodesis of the contralateral limb reduced the mean predicted LLD from 3.8 to 1.2 cm at maturity. We concluded that LLD (>2.5 cm) might result from

Scedosporium spp. are increasingly recognized as causes of resistant life-threatening infections in immunocompromised patients. Scedosporium spp. also cause a wide spectrum of conditions, including mycetoma, saprobic involvement and colonization of the airways, sinopulmonary infections, extrapulmonary localized infections, and disseminated infections. Invasive scedosporium infections are also associated with central nervous infection following near-drowning accidents. The most common sites of infection are the lungs, sinuses, bones, joints, eyes, and brain. Scedosporium apiospermum and Scedosp
