Neurotransmitter analysis using liquid chromatography-electrochemical detection in the 21st century: Critical review from an analytical chemistry perspective.

Neurotransmitter research (detection, identification, determination) plays a special role in neuroscience, neurochemical research, and biomedical analyses. Their type or quantity allows for a better understanding of brain function, diagnosis of neurological diseases, monitoring the effects of neuroactive substances, assessing treatment effectiveness, or conducting scientific research. For these reasons, it is essential to use analytical methods suitable to detect neurotransmitters at low levels, most often in biological samples with a complex matrix (e.g., tissue homogenates, cerebrospinal flu

A new graphical method to display data sets representing biomechanical knee behaviour.

BACKGROUND: When researchers describe data from their studies, there is no rule defining the best way to represent results. Therefore, collecting and explaining results from personal research or understanding data from publications is not always straightforward. These issues are even worse in fields such as biomedical engineering, where researchers from different backgrounds, usually engineers and surgeons, need to interact and exchange information. For these reasons, the purpose of this study is to introduce and illustrate an innovative method to represent, concisely and intuitively, biomecha

Eyes wide shut?--A conceptual and empirical critique of methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been the 'gold standard' pharmacotherapy treatment for illicit opioid dependence for over 30 years. It has been widely evaluated, and is generally claimed to be 'effective'. METHODS: The objective of this paper is to review the rationale of MMT as an intervention for a biomedical disorder with primary social objectives as well as the methodological quality and evidence of MMT outcome research. Data sources included opioid dependence treatment practice, review and outcome research literature (1965-2001) in the form of peer-reviewed articles

A translational neuroscience & computational evaluation of a D1R partial agonist for schizophrenia (TRANSCENDS): Rationale and study design of a brain-based clinical trial.

Despite decades of research, cognitive impairment remains a critical untreated symptom for many patients with schizophrenia. One way to accelerate the development of pro-cognitive therapies for schizophrenia is to evaluate compounds using biomarker approaches tailored to relevant neural mechanisms. While D1/D5 receptor (D1R/D5R) agonism has been extensively studied in neuroscience, its therapeutic potential for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia remains untapped. The Translational Neuroscience & Computational Evaluation of a D1R Partial Agonist for Schizophrenia (TRANSCENDS) clinical trial

Bridging the knowledge gap: a feminist lens on the post-birth control syndrome and media narratives.

BACKGROUND: Research regarding the period after the discontinuation of oral contraceptives remains largely confined to the return of fertility and menstruation, reflecting a narrow and medicalizing approach to sexual and reproductive health. Still, beyond this biomedical discourse, there is a growing debate concerning the experiences of those who discontinue oral contraception. This debate gravitates around the term "post-birth control syndrome" and mostly takes place in various online communities. AIM: In this perspective, we aim to explore this discourse on German and English language (soci

Hormonal mechanisms of women's risk in the face of traumatic stress.

Women are underrepresented in biomedical research, limiting understanding of their disproportionate rates of stress-related disorders. Although men experience more trauma, women are twice as likely to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We tested whether ovarian hormones contribute to this disparity via their influence on threat-related brain activity. In a randomized, double-blind crossover study of 110 young women, we examined how exogenous estradiol (E2) modulates threat neurocircuitry, timed precisely to ovarian phase. E2 increased engagement of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex…

Network pharmacology-based investigation and experimental validation of the mechanism of metformin in the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia.

Metformin, a widely used anti-diabetic agent, has shown significant anti-cancer properties as reported in in various cancers, including acute myeloid leukemia. However, the detailed mechanisms by which metformin influences acute myeloid leukemia remain unrevealed. Employing a synergistic approach of network pharmacology and experimental validation, this study systematically identifies and analyzes potential metformin targets and AML-related genes. These findings are then cross-referenced with biomedical databases to construct a target-gene network, providing insights into metformin's pharmacod

In vitro analysis of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle mediated degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their antimicrobial activity.

To degrade anthracene, magnetite nanoparticles were produced using a simple co-precipitation process. The fabricated nanoparticles have been analyzed for structural and optical properties. XRD examination revealed that the produced Fe3O4 nanoparticles were cubic phase, having a mean crystallite dimension of 18.84 nm. DLS determined the hydrodynamic diameter of Fe3O4 nanoparticles to be 182 nm. UV-Vis research revealed that Fe3O4 nanoparticles absorb at 390 nm. A peak at 895 cm-1 in the FT-IR study indicated the metal-oxygen connection. The synthesized Fe3O4 nanoparticles demonstrated an effect

Chemical transformation and cytotoxicity of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) accumulated in mitochondria.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) have been widely used as a nanoscale tool in biomedical research. However, it remains largely unknown how IONPs are transformed at a subcellular level to elicit distinct biological effects. In the present study, we prepared three different IONPs, including two IONPs targeting mitochondria (IONP-TPP) and lysosomes (IONP-APM), respectively, and a control with no specified target (IONP). By MTT assay and JC-1 staining, mitochondria-targeted IONP-TPP was found to produce significant cytotoxicity and severe mitochondrial membrane depolarization in MCF-7 cells. Furth…

Spondyloarthritis in Taihangshan Macaques (Macaca mulatta tcheliensis).

The rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) is the most widely distributed nonhuman primate species, and captive populations play an important role in biomedical research due to close phylogenetic and physiological similarity to human beings. However, to our best knowledge, the spondyloarthritis (SpA) in rhesus macaques has been exclusively reported in captive or semicaptive populations rather than wild counterparts. In the present study, we report 2 cases of SpA observed in Taihangshan macaques (Macaca mulatta tcheliensis) inhabiting the Taihangshan Macaque National Nature Reserve, Henan Province, Ch…
