Computerized anatomy of the distal radius and its relevance to volar plating, research, and teaching.

Distal radius fractures are common and fracture patterns and fixation can be complex. Computerized anatomy evaluation (CAE) might offer non-invasive and enhanced anatomy assessment that might help with implant selection and placement and screw length determination. Our goal was to test the accuracy of two CAE methods for anatomical volar plate positioning and screw lengths measurement of the distal radius. We included 56 high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography scans of intact, human distal radii. Plates were placed manually onto 3D printed models (method 1), which was compa

Comparison of Erich arch bar versus embrasure wires for intraoperative intermaxillary fixation in mandibular fractures.

PURPOSE: Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) is a fundamental principle in the management of mandibular fractures but with recent advent of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), use of IMF is almost limited intraoperatively. Therefore, we compared the efficacy of Erich arch bar versus embrasure wires for intraoperative IMF in mandibular fractures. METHOD: This prospective study was comprised of 50 patients with mandibular fractures who required ORIF with intraoperative IMF. Patients were categorized into two groups of 25 patients each: Erich arch bar technique was used for group A and embras

Biomechanical analysis of titanium fixation plates and screws in mandibular angle fractures.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of different rigid fixation methods in mandibular angle fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different three-dimensional finite element models of the mandible were developed to simulate the biomechanical responses of titanium plates and screws. The fracture lines were fixed with double 4-hole straight, 4-hole square, and 5-hole Y plates with monocortical screws. 150 N incisal occlusal loads were simulated on the models. The commercial ANSYS software was utilized to calculate the Von Mises stresses on fixative applianc

Can an adipofascial flap be used to prevent adhesions after plating of the proximal phalanx? A case report.

Tendon adhesions in zone IV after proximal phalangeal fractures are common and may lead to loss of range of motion at the proximal interphalangeal joint. The type of fracture, surgical technique and rehabilitation strategy also influence the final functional outcome. Plate fixation is a reliable solution in cases of comminuted phalangeal fracture. This article describes how adhesions between the plate and extensor apparatus in cases of comminuted fractures of the proximal phalanx can be reduced by using an adipofascial flap.

Establishment of a novel dwarf rat strain: cartilage calcification insufficient (CCI) rats.

Rats with dwarfism accompanied by skeletal abnormalities, such as shortness of the limbs, tail, and body (dwarf rats), emerged in a Jcl-derived Sprague-Dawley rat colony maintained at the Institute for Animal Experimentation, St. Marianna University Graduate School of Medicine. Since the dwarfism was assumed to be due to a genetic mutation based on its frequency, we bred the dwarf rats and investigated their characteristics in order to identify the causative factors of their phenotypes and whether they could be used as a human disease model. One male and female that produced dwarf progeny were

Treatment of recent trochanteric fracture in adults.

Recent trochanteric fracture is frequent in adults, and mainly affects elderly patients who risk loss of independence. Treatment is surgical, of various sorts. Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with intra- or extra-medullary implants is the most frequent attitude in these fractures, which usually heal easily. In elderly patients, arthroplasty is an alternative of choice for some authors. These different treatment modalities are presented, focusing on technical details. Possible technical difficulties and the means of dealing with them are considered. Published results help in choosing th

The percutaneous compression plate versus the dynamic hip screw for treatment of intertrochanteric hip fractures: a systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies.

BACKGROUND: The use of a percutaneous compression plate (PCCP) provides a minimally invasive technique for the fixation of stable intertrochanteric femoral fractures. It has several theoretically potential advantages over the dynamic hip screw (DHS) such as shorten incision and lower incidence of wound infection. HYPOTHESIS: PCCP have several advantages than DHS, such as reduced blood loss, transfusion, mortality, shorter operative time, and lower incidence of complications. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to identify the clinical outcomes and safety of patients with st

Multidirectional volar fixed-angle plating using cancellous locking screws for distal radius fractures--evaluation of three screw configurations in an extra-articular fracture model.

INTRODUCTION: Volar fixed-angle plating is a popular treatment for unstable distal radius fractures. Despite the availability of plating systems for treating distal radius fractures, little is known about the mechanical properties of multidirectional fixed-angle plates. The aim of this study was to compare the primary fixation stability of three possible screw configurations in a distal extra-articular fracture model using a multidirectional fixed-angle plate with metaphyseal cancellous screws distally. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen Sawbones radii (Sawbones, Sweden, model# 1027) were used to

Biomechanical comparison of interfragmentary compression in transverse fractures of the olecranon.

Compression and absolute stability are important in the management of intra-articular fractures. We compared tension band wiring with plate fixation for the treatment of fractures of the olecranon by measuring compression within the fracture. Identical transverse fractures were created in models of the ulna. Tension band wires were applied to ten fractures and ten were fixed with Acumed plates. Compression was measured using a Tekscan force transducer within the fracture gap. Dynamic testing was carried out by reproducing cyclical contraction of the triceps of 20 N and of the brachialis of 10
