Osteoporotic spinal fractures are seen above previous spinal instrumentation and also found in patients with diffuse idiopathic spondylotic hyperostosis (DISH). In both situations, there is marked spinal rigidity with a limited mobile spinal section that is vulnerable to motion and subsequent fracture with no or minimal trauma especially when there is concurrent osteoporosis. This is an unusual case where the patient developed a vertical anterior avulsion type fracture of T12 through a large bridging spondylotic ventral spur of bone, resulting in severe positional pain above a previous lumbar

Musculoskeletal tumors are relatively rare diagnoses made by orthopaedic surgeons. While approximately 2,500 primary bone sarcomas are diagnosed annually in the USA, the number of benign orthopaedic tumors encountered annually is far more difficult to quantify. Some studies have documented between 3% and 10% of the general population having benign bony lesions. Many of these conditions can be simply observed, while others will require surgical intervention. Surgical treatments for benign conditions range from a one-step curettage to extensive resection and reconstruction. With treatment of lar

The aim of this study was to describe the histological features of erosive hand osteoarthritis (EHOA), which is considered an aggressive subset of hand osteoarthritis (OA) characterized by severe local inflammation and degeneration of the distal and proximal interphalangeal joints. Two patients with EHOA underwent replacement with a cement-free press fit ceramic prosthesis of a proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ). Clinical and radiological data were collected and histological examination was performed. Radiological examination with histological correlation showed complete erosion of the arti

Humeral hemiarthroplasty, anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty, and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty all rely on a prosthetic articular surface fixed to the proximal humerus. Humeral implant designs have changed considerably as a result of improved understanding of proximal humeral anatomy and prosthetic biomechanics. Fixed, monoblock implants have been superseded by modular implants with variable inclination, offset, version, and stem length. Press-fit designs now commonly have surface coatings that allow bony ingrowth. Metaphyseal fixation is often favored over diaphyseal fixation. Both c

Polyelectrolyte complexation is critical to the formation and properties of many biological and polymeric materials, and is typically initiated by aqueous mixing followed by fluid-fluid phase separation, such as coacervation. Yet little to nothing is known about how coacervates evolve into intricate solid microarchitectures. Inspired by the chemical features of the cement proteins of the sandcastle worm, here we report a versatile and strong wet-contact microporous adhesive resulting from polyelectrolyte complexation triggered by solvent exchange. After premixing a catechol-functionalized weak

Elbow replacement arthroplasty has become a standard surgical treatment for a variety of diseases of the elbow. First popularized for the treatment of late-stage rheumatoid arthritis and other debilitating forms of joint disease, the current indications have expanded to include primary treatment of elbow trauma. The most commonly used total elbow replacements are linked semiconstrained chromium-molybdenum alloy or titanium alloy prostheses with polyethylene bearing surfaces. These are inserted after resection of the ulnotrochlear joint and typically cemented in place; the radial head is often

This article describes the successful concurrent intentional replantation (IR) of 2 maxillary molars. A 28-year-old woman complained of repeated swelling and pain in the left maxilla when chewing. Teeth No. 14 and 15 were sensitive to percussion and palpation. Radiographs revealed a large periapical radiolucent lesion and inadequate root canal fillings in both teeth. The patient refused nonsurgical retreatment, periradicular surgery, or implant replacement as treatment options, so IR was chosen. After the extraction of tooth No. 14, root-end resection and root-end preparation of the 3 roots we

The outcome of 25 primary THAs in patients with hip dysplasia using the AML Bantam femoral stem (DePuy) is reported. Age at operation averaged 43 ± 10 years. Twenty-two of 25 stems were cementless. All cementless acetabular components had conventional or cross-linked polyethylene and screws. Follow-up averaged 11 ± 5 years (range 4-18). Four cementless stems were revised after 3, 4, 8, and 9 years; 2/3 cemented stems were revised at 8 and 18 years. Femoral revisions demonstrated extensive conventional polyethylene wear, periprosthetic osteolysis and loosening. Five entire cups were revised for

A 71-year-old man was admitted with a 2-day history of the hot and swollen right knee in December 2012. He had undergone a primary cemented right total knee replacement (TKR) in 2002. He also had a history of chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL), haemolytic anaemia and splenomegaly, and was in partial remission following chemotherapy in 2008. He underwent arthroscopic washout of right TKR on admission. Blood cultures on admission and joint fluid specimen grew Haemophilus influenzae (Hi). The isolate was identified as a non-encapsulated Hi strain by the reference laboratory. Non-encapsulated Hi st

A wild-caught specimen of the zonetail butterfly ray, Gymnura zonura (Bleeker), harboured numerous specimens of Hexacanalis folifer Cielocha & Jensen, 2011 (Systematic Parasitology, 79, 1-16; Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea) within its spiral intestine. The cestodes were primarily attached in single rows along the base of mucosal folds, each associated with a nodular mucosal thickening. Microscopically, the scolex was embedded within the submucosa and muscularis; the attachment sites were marked by ulceration and necro-proliferative inflammation demarcating the parasite from normal host tissues. Epidermal cysts of periorbit and intraorbit are common problems to ophthalmologists, but giant periorbital epidermal cyst is exceedingly rare. Only a few cases have been reported previously. A 62-year-old woman presented with a large right periorbital area mass that resulted in right upper lid complete ptosis and severe gaze limitation in all directions. Visual acuity of right eye was finger count (20/2000). Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a bone-destroying mass involving the lateral side of the right superior orbital limb. Complete surgical removal was performed th

Reconstruction materials and techniques for the base of the skull have undergone rapid developments and differentiation in recent years. While mostly autotransplants, collagens or resorbable alloplastic materials are preferred for duraplasties, pronounced organ-specific differences can be observed in the reconstruction of hard tissues. The use of polymethylmethacryl bone cement, once wide-spread, has decreased greatly due to the release of toxic monomers. Bony autotransplants are still used primarily for smaller skull-base defects, intraoperatively formable titanium nets may be also used for l

INTRODUCTION: Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) may occur as a consequence of trauma, orthodontic treatment, intracoronal bleaching, and surgical procedures and may lead to the progressive and destructive loss of tooth structure. The restoration of these resorptive defects is a challenging task because no single restorative material possesses good sealing ability, reinforcement of remaining tooth structure, and biocompatibility simultaneously.
METHODS: This case presented with invasive cervical resorption class 2 (Heithersay) and apical inflammatory resorption caused by trauma in tooth #9. T

This study evaluated the histological response and the expression of tenascin (TN) and fibronectin (FN) after pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or calcium hydroxide (CH). Class V cavities and pulp exposure were performed in 40 primary pig teeth. The pulps were capped with either MTA or CH, and the cavities were sealed with resin-modified glass ionomer cement. CH was used as a control. Seven and 70 days posttreatment, the animals were sacrificed and teeth were prepared for histological evaluation. TN and FN were detected by immunostaining. A severe inflammatory response was obs

Butenolide [5-octylfuran-2(5H)-one] is a very promising antifouling compound. Here, the effects of butenolide on larval behavior and histology are compared in two major fouling organisms, viz. cypris larvae of Balanus amphitrite and swimming larvae of Bugula neritina. Butenolide diminished the positive phototactic behavior of B. amphitrite (EC50=0.82 μg ml(-1)) and B. neritina (EC50=3 μg ml(-1)). Its effect on the attachment of cyprids of B. amphitrite was influenced by temperature, and butenolide increased attachment of larvae of B. neritina to the bottom of the experimental wells. At concent

Kummell's disease is a rare, delayed posttraumatic collapse of a vertebral body that can occur several months or even years after an osteoporotic compression fracture. However, there are few reports of posterior element fractures associated with Kummell's disease. A 72-year-old man who had sustained an L1 osteoporotic compression fracture 14 months prior was admitted to our institution with incapacitating back pain. Plain radiographs showed progressive collapse of the L1 vertebral body and severe kyphosis at the thoracolumbar junction. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a posterior element fr

In contrast to the intramedullary (80%) and intracortical (14%) subtypes, the subperiostal subtype of aneurysmatic bone cysts (sABC) is relatively rare (6%). Females are affected more frequently than males, whereby the diaphysis is predominantly affected and less frequently the metaphysis of long bones as well as the vertebral column. Especially in conventional radiography sABCs can mimic aggressive lesions. Cross-sectional imaging can potentially reduce the wide range of differential diagnoses. Due to typical imaging features magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most valuable modality to r

Biomimetic remineralization is potentially useful for the remineralization of incompletely resin-infiltrated collagen matrices created by etch-and-rinse adhesives. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that structurally altered dentin collagen cannot be remineralized to the same hierarchical order and dimension seen in structurally intact dentin collagen. The remineralization medium consisted of a set Portland cement/simulated body fluid system containing polycarboxylic acid and polyvinylphosphonic acid as biomimetic analogs. Remineralization of air-dried, collapsed hybrid layers was apparen
