The effectiveness of combined surgery and chemotherapy in primary hydatid cyst of thigh muscles, a rare localization and its management.

Hydatid cyst is a common infestation caused by helminths in humans and usually involves the liver and lungs. Primarily, cases of hydatid cysts in the thigh muscles are extremely rare and are generally in the form of case reports. It is an important disease due to its insidious course, its confusion with other soft tissue pathologies, delay in diagnosis and painstaking surgery. In our study, the largest case series in the literature, the clinical stages of the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of 9 hydatid cysts that develop primarily in the thigh muscles were evaluated. The risk of recurrence

PURPOSE: Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is a medically important disease that is caused by the metacestodes of Echinococcus granulosus. Human hydatid is considered an endemic disease in specific regions of Iran. The goal of the present study was to determine the genetic diversity of E. granulosus from the paraffin-embedded human tissue samples which were collected from the endemic regions of Iran. METHODS: Fifty-five formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded hydatid cysts (FFPE) of humans, which had been removed surgically, were obtained from the South Khorasan and Sistan and Baluchistan provinces. Ovarian Carcinoma Uncloaked by Hydatidosis: An Intraoperative Epiphany.

Hydatidosis is an infective ailment that is caused by the parasite echinococcus granulosus. The parasitic infection typically produces cysts filled with excessive quantity of fluid and most commonly afflicts the liver. While secondary hydatidosis remains exceedingly rare, cases of hydatidosis in organs such as the ovaries and the fallopian tubes have been documented in the literature. In such instances, the patients present with a vague constellation of symptoms, including abdominal distension and vague abdominal pain. Herein, we elucidate the case of a female patient who presented with massiv

In vitro potential effect of Pipper longum methanolic extract against protoscolices of hydatid cysts.

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of methanolic extract of P. longum (PLM) against protoscolices of hydatid cyst in vitro. Four different concentrations of PLM extract (25, 50, 100 and 150 mg/ml) were used for the experiments. The metabolites in the PLM extract were characterized by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed the highest lethality of PLM extract in 50 mg/ml for 60 min exposure. The IC50 value obtained about 20 mg/ml for 60 min of PLM extract exposure. In this study, valuable findings were obtained for the first time about the scolicidal activity of

Label-free detection of echinococcosis and liver cirrhosis based on serum Raman spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis.

In this paper, we investigated the feasibility of using serum Raman spectroscopy and multivariate analysis method to discriminate echinococcosis and liver cirrhosis from healthy volunteers. Raman spectra of serum samples from echinococcosis, liver cirrhosis, and healthy volunteers were recorded under 532 nm excitation. The normalized mean Raman spectra revealed specific biomolecular differences associated with the disease, mainly manifested as the contents of β carotene in the serum of patients with echinococcosis and liver cirrhosis were lower than those of healthy people. Furthermore, princi

Fat-Containing Lesions of the Liver: A Review of Differential Diagnoses.

The presence of intralesional fat provides an invaluable tool for narrowing the differential diagnosis for both benign and malignant neoplasms of the abdomen and pelvis. The ability to characterize intralesional fat is further expanded by the ability of magnetic resonance imaging to detect small quantities (intravoxel) of fat. The differential diagnosis of fat-containing lesions arising in the liver is broader than that of many other solid organs. However, this differential can be further refined depending on the type of fat (macroscopic vs intravoxel) and with the use of ancillary imaging fin

Primary hydatid disease of the transverse abdominal muscle A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcus is a parasitic disease that affects all organs and tissues. The most commonly affected are liver (70-80%) and lungs (10-25%), while very rarely, in about 5% of cases, it can be found in the spleen, kidneys, brain, heart, pancreas, muscles and skeleton. CASE REPORT: Although localization of hydatid cyst in muscle is rare, it is important to consideredPORT it in the differential diagnosis of a cystic mass in the muscle. Clinical diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis is based on general ultrasound imaging, CT, MRI, differentiation of Echinococcus-Ag, ELISA testing, immuno

Uncommon musculoskeletal femoral hydatid cyst disturbs a female for a year: Case report.

"Hydatid cyst" which also known as cystic Echinococcosis is a parasitic infestation caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lungs are the most sites to occur. Incidence in muscles is exceptionally rare. We report a case of a 36-year-old female presented with an uncomfortable mass in the upper medial of her right thigh without any presence of other symptoms. She lived in a rural area in Manbij, which is an endemic area of hydatid cysts in Syria. She was a shepherdess; therefore she had direct contact with sheep and dogs. Ultrasound examination showed a cyst located

Echinococcus multilocularis: Diagnostic problem in a liver core biopsy.

Echinococcus multilocularis causes an aggressive form of hydatidosis whose histomorphological picture is generally not well recognized. We report a case of 39-year-old women presenting with poorly circumscribed nodules in the right hepatic lobe. Owing to the clinical suspicion of focal nodular hyperplasia and hepatocellular adenoma, a core biopsy was performed. The histological findings of necrotic fibrous tissue infiltrated by narrow epithelial cords and small cysts containing cytokeratin positive material were in concordance with the diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma. Subsequent examination of

Pancreatic cystic echinococcosis causing acute pancreatitis.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic infestation, most commonly arises from Echinococcus granulosus helminth. The definitive hosts are carnivora, such as dogs and cats, and the intermediate hosts are herbivores, including cattle, sheep and goats. Humans are intermediate hosts, causing cystic echinococcosis. In our country, the incidence of echinococcos is 14%. The disease is localized in the liver by 70%. Cyst hydatid localized in the pancreas is unusual, with an incidence of 0.2-0.6%, and rarely causes acute pancreatitis. In this report, we present a 45-year-old male patient with cyst hydatid, which

Tacrolimus, a rapamycin target protein inhibitor, exerts anti-cystic echinococcosis effects both in vitro and in vivo.

In view of a growing need for new treatment options for human cystic echinococcosis (CE), we aimed to investigate the efficacy of mTOR pathway inhibitors against CE in vitro and in vivo. Among the seven mTOR inhibitors evaluated, tacrolimus (TAC) showed significant dose- and time-dependent killing of cultured protoscoleces and cysts in vitro. Notably, the oral administration of TAC (4 mg/kg/day) to CE mice model highly effectively reduced both the weight and number of parasitic cysts. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that TAC destroys the ultrastructure of cysts, both in vitro and in

An Atypical Presentation of Cystic Echinococcosis.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an infection caused by the Echinococcus granulosus tapeworm. CE generally manifests in the liver, but it may present in any organ. These patients often first present to the emergency department. Mortality over 10 years is significant for those who go undiagnosed. We report the case of a 34-year-old patient who immigrated from Yemen six years earlier. She presented with acute onset dysuria, suprapubic pain, and fever. Imaging revealed a primary multicystic mass on the right renal pole with a secondary lesion in the right hepatic lobe. On further investigation, the

Cardiac hydatid cyst in the right ventricle: An unusual case at a rare site.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection by the larval stage of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. It affects liver, lungs and rarely other organs. Medical imaging provide the basis for diagnosis. This case report describes an extremely rare location of cardiac hydatid cyst in the right ventricle of the heart. We describe a 23-year-old woman who presented with shortness of breath and productive cough. Laboratory investigations showed marked eosinophilia and anemia. Chest radiography and abdominal ultrasonography were unremarkable. Cardiac computed tomography (CT) identified two well-defined
