Phenolic glycolipid-I, a marker lipid of Mycobacterium leprae, was isolated from skin biopsies obtained from untreated lepromatous leprosy patients by silicic acid and florisil column chromatography and purified by thin layer chromatography. Tissues with varying bacillary loads were analysed for their phenolic glycolipid content. A good correlation was observed between the bacillary population of the tissues and the phenolic glycolipid content.

This technique allows the direct analysis of the inhibitory properties of compounds separated by thin-layer chromatography, generating an inhibition profile. Hydrolysis of 2,4-dithiophenobarbital in aqueous solutions of pH 2-12 was investigated at 40 and 60 degrees C using UV spectrophotometry. The values of reaction order, rate constants, pKa1 and pKa2 and activation energy were determined. The preliminary estimation of degradation products was accomplished using thin layer chromatography. The major products were isolated by circular chromatography and identified by spectroscopic and classical methods.

The extracellular proteinase complex of the microscopic fungus Aspergillus ochraceus 513 was isolated, purified, and separated by affinity chromatography on bacillichin-silochrom and subsequent column chromatography on DEAE-Toyopearl 650 M. The extracellular enzyme of the protein C activator type had a molecular mass of 36.5 kDa and activity close to that of the Agkistrodon snake venom protein C activator. The fibrinolytic and anticoagulant activities of the enzyme were investigated.

Hyperimmune horse anti-bothropic serum, used in serum therapy, was analyzed for its IgGT content and protective ability. IgGT was isolated through a combination of salt-mediated hydrophobic chromatography and protein A affinity chromatography. The chromatographic fractions obtained were analyzed with regard to their isotype content and protective ability. The results suggest that the protective ability of hyperimmune anti-venom serum is located mainly in the IgGT subclass.
