White matter correlates of cognitive impairment in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Impairment of cognitive functions occurs in essential tremor, though the mechanism is largely unknown. The aim of this study was to find microstructural correlates of cognitive dysfunction seen in essential tremor by using DTI and neuropsychological assessment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-five patients with essential tremor and 55 matched healthy controls were evaluated. Essential tremor was diagnosed by using the National Institutes of Health criteria. Subjects were assessed by using a structured neuropsychological battery. DTI data were acquired by using 3T MR imagi

Cognitive and autonomic dysfunction in presymptomatic and early Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is characterized by disorders of movement, cognition and behavior. Individuals with Huntington's disease display aberrant changes in the autonomic nervous system that are detected even before the onset of other symptoms. Subtle cognitive dysfunction may start before other clinical manifestations. The aim of the present study was to investigate the autonomic nervous system response to mental arithmetic and the relationship between the autonomic and cognitive/motor function in presymptomatic and early Huntington's disease. We examined 15 presymptomatic Huntington's disease g…

Characterizing cognitive function during relapse in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize neuropsychological (NP) test performance during multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse and recovery. METHODS: Clinical status was assessed with NP testing and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) in 24 relapsing patients, and 24 individually-matched, stable controls. All presented with cognitive symptoms as indicated by patient, clinician or caregiver perceived decline, but were free of optic neuritis, ataxia and upper extremity weakness that could compromise NP testing. The presence of enhancing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions was considered confirmatory of re

Geriatric depression and its relation with cognitive impairment and dementia.

Different subtypes of depressive syndromes exist in late life; many of them have cognitive impairment and sometimes it is difficult to differentiate them from dementia. This research aimed to investigate subtypes of geriatric depression associated with cognitive impairment, searched for differential variables and tried to propose a study model. A hundred and eighteen depressive patients and forty normal subjects matched by age and educational level were evaluated with an extensive neuropsychological battery, scales to evaluate neuropsychiatric symptoms and daily life activities (DLA). Depressi

Update on cognitive decline and dementia in elderly patients with diabetes.

AIM: This article is an update of the relationship between type 2 diabetes (T2D), cognitive dysfunction and dementia in older people. METHODS AND RESULTS: The number of older patients consulting for diabetes who also exhibit cognitive difficulties is consistently growing because of the increased longevity of the population as a whole and, according to a number of studies, the increased risk of cognitive impairment and dementia in older diabetic patients. Many studies have demonstrated a link between poor glucose control and deteriorated cognitive function in diabetic patients. A history of se

Cognitive impairments and psychopathological parameters in patients of the schizophrenic spectrum.

Cognitive impairment is a core feature of schizophrenia and it is considered by many researchers as one of the dimensional components of the disorder. Cognitive dysfunction occurs in 85% of schizophrenic patients and it is negatively associated with the outcome of the disorder, the psychosocial functioning of the patients, and non-compliance with treatment. Many different cognitive domains are impaired in schizophrenia, such as attention, memory, executive functions and speech. Nowadays, it is argued that apart from clinical heterogeneity of schizophrenia, there is probable heterogeneity in th

Cognitive and emotional reactions to questions in the Comparison Question Test.

The effect of situational factors on perceptions of items on the polygraph Comparison Question Test (CQT) was assessed. In an initial experiment, 86 students (30 men, 56 women; M age = 20.3 yr., SD = 4.0) imagined one of eight scenarios that varied by guilt or innocence, the commission of a real crime or mock crime, and interrogation by a police officer or a professor. They then rated generic CQT questions for importance and emotional concern. All participants rated crime-relevant questions as being more important than past-crime comparison questions. "Guilty" participants also rated these que

Closed-loop rehabilitation of age-related cognitive disorders.

Cognitive deficits are common in older adults, as a result of both the natural aging process and neurodegenerative disease. Although medical advancements have successfully prolonged the human lifespan, the challenge of remediating cognitive aging remains. The authors discuss the current state of cognitive therapeutic interventions and then present the need for development and validation of more powerful neurocognitive therapeutics. They propose that the next generation of interventions be implemented as closed-loop systems that target specific neural processing deficits, incorporate quantitati

Cognitive performance profiles by latent classes of drug use.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The relationship between substance use and cognitive deficits is complex and requires innovative methods to enhance understanding. The present study is the first to use LCA to examine associations of drug use patterns with cognitive performance. METHODS: Cocaine/heroin users (N = 552) completed questionnaires, and cognitive measures. LCA identified classes based on past-month drug use and adjusted for probabilities of group membership when examining cognitive performance. Latent indicators were: alcohol (ALC), cigarettes (CIG), marijuana (MJ), crack smoking (CS), na

Cognitive control in opioid dependence and methadone maintenance treatment.

BACKGROUND: Substance misuse is associated with cognitive dysfunction. We used a stop signal task to examine deficits in cognitive control in individuals with opioid dependence (OD). We examined how response inhibition and post-error slowing are compromised and whether methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), abstinence duration, and psychiatric comorbidity are related to these measures in individuals with OD. METHODS: Two-hundred-and-sixty-four men with OD who were incarcerated at a detention center and abstinent for up to 2 months (n = 108) or at a correctional facility and abstinent for appr

[Brain renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and cognitive function].

The presence of hypertension and other vascular risk factors such as diabetes mellitus is known to be associated with the decreased cognitive function. Blood pressure-lowering with antihypertensive agents was suggested to reduce the risk of dementia or cognitive decline. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system plays a role not only in the cardiovascular system including blood pressure regulation, but also in the central nervous system. The possible beneficial effects of ARB and ACE inhibitor on cognitive function are also becoming highlighted in the clinical field. This article reviews the ef

The Relationship between Negative Affect and Reported Cognitive Failures.

The purpose of this study was to expand our understanding of the range of negative affect associated with reported problems with everyday functions and activities, measured by the cognitive failures questionnaire (CFQ). Evidence from previous research indicates that individuals meeting criteria for mood disorders, such as major depression or seasonal affective disorder, experience cognitive deficits in memory and attention that can lead to problems with everyday activities reported in the CFQ. The Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) was used to assess potential correlations with a wider

Environmental toxicity and poor cognitive outcomes in children and adults.

Extensive literature has already documented the deleterious effects of heavy metal toxins on the human brain and nervous system. These toxins, however, represent only a fraction of the environmental hazards that may pose harm to cognitive ability in humans. Lead and mercury exposure, air pollution, and organic compounds all have the potential to damage brain functioning yet remain understudied. In order to provide comprehensive and effective public health and health care initiatives for prevention and treatment, we must first fully understand the potential risks, mechanisms of action, and outc

Progressive cognitive decline in an adult patient with cleidocranial dysplasia.

Cleidocranial dysplasia is a skeletal disorder characterized by a defective skull and defective clavicles caused by RUNX2, an activator of osteoblast differentiation. Consistent with the expression pattern of RUNX2, this disorder typically affects the skeletal system, but not the central nervous system. A 56-year-old man with the prototypic skeletal defects of cleidocranial dysplasia and a RUNX2 deletion presented with a progressive cognitive decline after the age of 40 years. After a failed cranioplasty during childhood, he had worn a protective helmet until young adulthood. His current neuro

APOE polymorphisms and cognitive functions in patients with brain tumors.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess whether the APOE ε4 allele and other APOE single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) influence neuropsychological and neuroimaging outcomes in patients with brain tumors. METHODS: Two hundred eleven patients with brain tumors participated in the study. All patients completed standardized neuropsychological tests and provided a blood sample for APOE genotyping. Ratings of white matter abnormalities were performed on MRI scans. Patients were classified into 2 groups based on the presence (n = 50) or absence (n = 161) of at least one APOE ε4 allele. Ad
