Tuberculosis disease among people with HIV: therapeutic advances.

Over the past 80 years, tuberculosis treatment has evolved with the development of all-oral treatments, which are now given for 4-6 months for drug-sensitive tuberculosis and 6-9 months for drug-resistant tuberculosis. Treatment success is often reduced among people with HIV due to an interplay of factors, including immune dysregulation, lower drug concentrations, complexities of cotreatment (eg, high pill burden and overlapping toxicities), and social factors. Recent clinical trials have shown that among adults and adolescents, treatment duration can be decreased to 4 months with repurposed t

Demixer: a probabilistic generative model to delineate different strains of a microbial species in a mixed infection sample.

MOTIVATION: Multi-drug resistant or hetero-resistant tuberculosis (TB) hinders the successful treatment of TB. Hetero-resistant TB occurs when multiple strains of the TB-causing bacterium with varying degrees of drug susceptibility are present in an individual. Existing studies predicting the proportion and identity of strains in a mixed infection sample rely on a reference database of known strains. A main challenge then is to identify de novo strains not present in the reference database, while quantifying the proportion of known strains. RESULTS: We present Demixer, a probabilistic generat

Association of viral exposure with tuberculosis disease progression: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Viral infections have been found to affect the outcome of bacterial infections, but for the case of tuberculosis, much emphasis has been on HIV and less attention has been given to other viruses. We conducted a systematic review to identify studies that investigated the association of viral infection other than HIV and HIV coinfection with tuberculosis disease susceptibility and progression. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Ovid Embase, and Scopus electronic databases using search terms "tuberculosis, viral disease, not HIV, TB, virus" in text words and MeSH terms for cohort and cro…

Co-infection of Aeromonas veronii and Megasporoporia sp. associated with mass mortality in Labeo bata: pathological effects and immune modulation in the host.

Co-infections have a considerable influence on fish production, altering the progression and severity of various fish diseases. Despite this, the impact of co-infection on aquatic animals, including fish, has only recently received minimal attention, leaving a significant gap in research. The research examines the cause behind significant mortality in Labeo bata. Microbial pathogens were isolated from infected tissue samples of bata, with preliminary identification of the strains as Aeromonas veronii and Megasporoporia sp. This identification was based on morphology, 16S rRNA and ITS PCR seque

Antimicrobial Tolerance in Cross-Kingdom Dual-Species Biofilms Formed by Fungi and Bacteria.

Candida albicans, the most common pathogenic fungus, can form biofilms on the surface of medical devices and often causes bloodstream infections. Biofilms have a complex structure composed of microorganisms and a surrounding extracellular matrix. Biofilms are difficult to treat because they are resistant to antifungal drugs and the host environment. Nearly one in four patients with candidemia have a polymicrobial infection. These polymicrobial biofilms, especially those comprising cross-kingdom species of fungi and bacteria, can lead to long hospital stays and high mortality rates. This review

Asymptomatic malaria parasitaemia and virological non-suppression among children living with HIV in a low transmission area in Accra, Ghana: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and malaria are two major diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Co-infection can significantly impact the clinical outcomes of both conditions. We assessed the proportion of HIV-infected children at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) and Princess Marie Louise Hospital (PML) with malaria parasites. The association between asymptomatic malaria parasitaemia and virological non-suppression was also determined in these children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study of 277 asymptomatic malaria in children receiving care at paediatric HIV clinics at KBTH and PM

A case presentation of widespread macular amyloidosis associated with dual hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection.

Macular amyloidosis is a variant of primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis in which amyloid protein is believed to be derived from keratinocytes. The care of this variant generally focuses on addressing the associated symptoms without the need to assess for underlying disease. However, an increasing number of cases of primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis have been reported in association with systemic diseases, particularly autoimmune diseases. A few cases of biphasic primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis have been reported in association with chronic hepatitis C infection. Herein, we re

Herpes simplex virus type 2 in sub-Saharan Africa and the potential impact of helminth immune modulation.

Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and helminth infections are among the most widespread infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Helminths are known to modulate host immune responses and consequently impact the severity and outcomes of unrelated diseases, including allergies, autoimmune conditions, and infectious diseases. In this way, helminths may modulate essential immune responses against HSV-2 during co-infection and may alter susceptibility to and pathology of HSV-2. However, the epidemiology of STH/HSV-2 co-infections is understudied, and whether helminths influence the host i

Risk factors for hospitalization and pneumonia development of pediatric patients with seasonal influenza during February-April 2023.

OBJECTIVES: In China influenza remains a low activity for continuous 3 years due to COVID-19 controls. We here sought to study the clinical characteristics and risk factors of the influenza infection among children after the mandatory COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. METHODS: We included 1,006 pediatric patients with influenza A virus (IAV) infection, enrolled in one tertiary hospital in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, China, during February to April 2023. Patients were divided into the outpatient (n = 798) and inpatient (n = 208) groups, and their baseline characteristics were compared betwee

Bacterial co-infections, secondary infections and antimicrobial use among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the sixth wave in Pakistan: findings and implications.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies in Pakistan have shown considerable over prescribing of antibiotics in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 despite very low prevalence of bacterial infections. Irrational use of antibiotics will worsen antimicrobial resistance (AMR). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of medical records of patients in the COVID-19 wards of three tertiary care hospitals to assess antibiotic use during the sixth COVID-19 wave. RESULTS: A total of 284 patients were included, most were male (66.9%), aged 30-50 years (50.7%) with diabetes mellitus the most common comorbidity. The most

Helminth co-infections have no additive detrimental impact on milk yield and milk quality compared to mono-infections in German dairy cows.

BACKGROUND: Infections with (tricho-)strongyles, Dictyocaulus viviparus or Fasciola hepatica have been shown to reduce milk production in dairy cows. However, the current published studies focused on one single helminth infection by neglecting helminth co-infections and their possible (additive) effects on host performance. Hence, for the first time, we investigated differences in the impact of patent helminth co-infections versus mono-infections on milk production parameters in individual cows. METHODS: A total of 1583 dairy cows from 27 herds were included in this study. Faecal samples were

COVID-19 associated Pulmonary Aspergillosis in Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit: Impact of Antifungal Prophylaxis.

Early after the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-pandemic, it was observed that critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) were susceptible to developing secondary fungal infections, particularly COVID-19 associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA). Here we report our local experience on the impact of mold active antifungal prophylaxis on CAPA occurrence in critically ill COVID-19 patients. This is a monocentric, prospective cohort study including all consecutive patients with COVID-19 associated acute respiratory failure who were admitted to our local medical I

Sex as a biological variable in HIV-1 and schistosome co-infection.

The sex of people living with HIV-1 infection, schistosome infection, or both, is a fundamental determinant of their clinical outcomes and of how these two infections interact in the host. Data from longitudinal and cross-sectional human studies and animal models indicate that males with HIV-1 and schistosome co-infection excrete fewer schistosome eggs and might have higher HIV-1 RNA viral loads and greater liver damage. Females with schistosome infection appear to have higher risk of HIV-1 acquisition than females without, particularly in Schistosoma haematobium infection, and a greater risk

Clinical Cases of Tick-Borne Diseases in Dogs During the Autumn-Winter Season in Poland.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) pose a growing threat to companion animals, especially dogs, due to the increasing abundance of tick populations in Europe, driven by climate change, urbanization, and the mobility of humans and animals. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in clinically ill dogs suspected of having developed TBDs during the autumn-winter season, as well as to detect pathogens in ticks collected during the same period in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland. A total of 30 dogs with clinical symptoms of babesiosis and 45 ticks from dogs were acquired

Impact of E. muris infection on B. burgdorferi-induced joint pathology in mice.

Tick-borne infections are increasing in the United States and around the world. The most common tick-borne disease in the United States is Lyme disease caused by infection with the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb), and pathogenesis varies from subclinical to severe. Bb infection is transmitted by Ixodes ticks, which can carry multiple other microbial pathogens, including Ehrlichia species. To address how the simultaneous inoculation of a distinct pathogen impacted the course of Bb-induced disease, we used C57BL/6 (B6) mice which are susceptible to Bb infection but develop only mild joint p
