We describe an additional patient with spastic paraplegia 48 (SPG48). A 52-year-old woman with gradually increasing gait disturbance was adm … l limbs. Laboratory studies including HTLV-1 titer detected no abnormalities. MRI demonstrated mild corpus callosum narrowing and prominent anterior periventricular hyperintensities in fluid attenuation inversion recovery images. In limb muscles, electromyography (EMG) showed a chronic neurogenic pattern including reduced interference. Gene analysis identified co …

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are major affective disorders associated with high risk for suicide. N … bilateral inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFOF), bilateral uncinate fasciculus (UF), and the corpus callosum (CC) was shown in MDD with prior SA, compared to MDD without prior SA and HC. Decreased FA was also found in bilateral IFOF, bilateral UF, and CC, as well as other WM bundles, in BD with prior SA, compared to BD without prior SA and HC. Significant …

BACKGROUND: Morbidity attributable to hypoxic-ischaemic injury (HIE) in the perinatal period remains problematic, and timely and accurate as … f the posterior limb of the internal capsule (PLIC) on T1-W inversion recovery sequences and of the corpus callosum on all sequences was also documented. After detailed neurodevelopmental assessment at 2 years of age, infants were classified into two groups according to whether they had a favourable or unfavourable outcome.
RESULTS: Of the 26 infants, 6 infants …

OBJECT: Ideal epilepsy surgery would eliminate seizures without causing any functional deficits. The aim of the present study was to assess seizure outcomes and complications after epilepsy surgery in children with intractable epilepsy.
METHODS: Data obtained in 134 children (75 boys and 59 girls) age 17 years or younger who underwent epilepsy surgery at Seoul National University Children's Hospital between 1993 and 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Epilepsy surgery included temporal resection (59 cases), extratemporal resection (56 cases), functional hemispherectomy (7 cases), callosotomy

BACKGROUND: Cortical signal intensity (SI) of the limbic system in adults is known to be higher than in neocortical structures, but time-related changes in SI during childhood have not been described.
OBJECTIVE: To detect maturation-related SI changes within the limbic system using a fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MR sequence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty children (10 boys, 10 girls; age 3.5-18 years, mean 11.2 years) with no neurological abnormality and normal MR imaging examination were retrospectively selected. On two coronal FLAIR slices, ten regions of interest (ROI) with

Recent neuropsychological, psycholinguistic, and evolutionary theories on language and gesture associate communicative gesture production exclusively with left hemisphere language production. An argument for this approach is the finding that right-handers with left hemisphere language dominance prefer the right hand for communicative gestures. However, several studies have reported distinct patterns of hand preferences for different gesture types, such as deictics, batons, or physiographs, and this calls for an alternative hypothesis. We investigated hand preference and gesture types in sponta

Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) is associated with premature birth, and injury during term birth. Many infants experiencing HI later show disruptions of language, with research suggesting that rapid auditory processing (RAP) deficits (i.e., impairment in the ability to discriminate rapidly changing acoustic signals), play a causal role in language problems. We recently bridged these lines of research by showing RAP deficits in rats with unilateral-HI injury induced on postnatal days 1, 7, or 10 (P1, P7, or P10. While robust RAP deficits were found in HI animals, it was suggested that our within-age samp

OBJECTIVE: Congenital ACTH insufficiency due to disorders of the hypothalamo-pituitary axis is life threatening. However, the optimal method for establishing the diagnosis remains controversial. The standard Synacthen test (SST) is safe and easy to perform in infancy, but its performance has not been well evaluated in infants and children with ACTH insufficiency.
DESIGN, PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: We aimed to determine the value of the SST by comparing the 30-min SST cortisol concentration with physiological (spontaneous) cortisol secretion (2-hourly measurements for 24 h) in 28 patients (13

A 30-year-old right-handed man (W.D.) with total callosal agenesis was examined neuropsychologically and with magnetic resonance imaging. Basic neuropsychological testing revealed normal intelligence and average attentional capabilities. Anatomically, W.D. shows strong leftward perisylvian asymmetry both for the planum temporale and planum parietale, an unusual pattern not found in our database of more than 200 brains of young and healthy individuals. Functionally, W.D. has strong right hand superiority for hand skill and tactile object recognition, indicating unusual left hemisphere dominance

Nine patients with cortical myoclonus (due to various pathologies), in whom movement of one limb induced bilateral limb jerks, were investigated. Three of these patients also had bilateral cortical reflex myoclonus when one limb was subjected to an electrical stimulus. The relative latencies to onset of electromyogram (EMG) activity in various ipsilateral and contralateral muscles in action and reflex jerks were studied. Bilateral reflex and action jerks induced by unilateral electrical stimuli or limb movement were not synchronous. EMG activity was usually recorded in the muscles of the stimu

Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) represent a diverse group of inborn errors of metabolism caused by defective glycosylation proce … c manifestations. Structural brain anomalies were commonly observed in our cohort and included thin corpus callosum, cortical atrophy, white matter abnormalities, cerebellar atrophy, and cerebellar vermis hypoplasia. Biallelic variants were identified in 94% of patients, while 6% had variants in X-linked genes. A total of 53 variants were identified in 29 genes, …
