Nosocomial infections in pediatric intensive care units.

Nosocomial infections are a significant problem in pediatric intensive care units. While Indian estimates are not available, western PICUs report incidence of 6-8%. The common nosocomial infections in PICU are bloodstream infections (20-30% of all infections), lower respiratory tract infections (20-35%), and urinary tract infections (15-20%); there may be some differences in their incidence in different PICUs. The risk of nosocomial infections depends on the host characteristics, the number of interventions, invasive procedures, asepsis of techniques, the duration of stay in the PICU and inapp

Serological testing for campylobacteriosis with sera forwarded for Salmonella and Yersinia serology.

Single serum specimens forwarded for Salmonella and Yersinia serology, from a total of 250 patients, were tested for anti-C. jejuni antibodies of the IgG class. Anti-Salmonella and anti-Y. enterocolitica O3 antibodies were examined by a microagglutination test and anti-C. jejuni antibodies by ELISA against a C. jejuni ultrasonicate before (ELISA) and after neutralization of antibodies which cross-reacted with Helicobacter pylori antigens (ELISA-Abs). Blood donor sera (n = 50) and sera (n = 40) from patients with various infectious diseases served as controls. A positive test for anti-Salmonell

Infection prophylaxis in the patient with bone marrow failure.

The last two decades have seen some significant advances made in the recognition of infection problems in the immunocompromised host and in their prevention in a rapidly expanding population. Many areas urgently await much-needed improvements, particularly anti-bacterial decontamination and fungal and viral prophylaxis. Despite interesting pilot studies there has been a failure to fully evaluate potential strategies in properly designed trials. Now is the time for large studies which control for the multitudinous variables of patient population such as disease status, protective environment, d

Clinical and epidemiological features of adenovirus keratoconjunctivitis in London.

Ninety-eight patients were studied. Ninety were consecutive patients who were isolation-positive for adenovirus, and 8, who were associated with a hospital outbreak of adenovirus serotype 8 infection, developed characteristic features of infection but were isolation-negative. The ratio of males to females was 2 to 1, and most patients were aged 20 to 39. Adenovirus serotypes 3, 7, and 8 were isolated from 86% of patients, and serotypes 2, 4, 5, 11, 15, and 15/29 from the remaining 14%. Adenovirus serotype 7 was more commonly isolated from patients under the age of 19 and was Not isolated durin

Respiratory syncytial virus infection induces heterologous protection against SARS-CoV-2 through γδ T cell-mediated trained immunity and the activation of SARS-CoV-2-reactive mucosal T cells.

Respiratory viruses can infect hosts concurrently or sequentially, potentially influencing each other's pathogenic trajectory. However, the underlying immune mechanisms governing these interactions remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined whether respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection modulates host susceptibility to subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection using two murine models. We found that prior RSV infection conferred dose- and time-dependent heterologous protection against SARS-CoV-2. Transcriptomic and immunological analyses revealed that RSV activated lung antigen-presenting

The association of fungal infection in cervical cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests a potential link between the fungal mycobiome and carcinogenesis. However, the relationship between fungal infection and cervical cancer progression remains inconclusive. This meta-analysis aimed to determine the pooled prevalence of fungal infection across different cervical pathological stages and assess its association with cervical lesions and HPV infection. PROSPERO CRD42024588513 is the registration number for the systematic review. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We systematically s

Lower respiratory tract co-infection of Streptococcus pneumoniae and respiratory syncytial virus shapes microbial landscape and clinical outcomes in children.

BACKGROUND: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI), which are most commonly caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae (SP) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), pose a substantial global health burden in children. However, the causal pathways of bacterial-viral co-infections, particularly the mechanisms by which commensal microbiota could modulate SP-RSV-associated LRTI outcomes remain to be elucidated. METHODS: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted on children aged 0-18 years who were admitted to Beijing Children's Hospital and Baoding Children's Hospital in China from Septembe

Burden of scabies and bacterial skin infection in Kiribati: results of a national population-based survey 2023.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a treatable neglected tropical disease with a high burden in Pacific island countries. Scabies is strongly associated with bacterial skin infection, which can lead to long-term sequelae. There is a paucity of epidemiologic data from Kiribati relating to scabies and bacterial skin infection. METHODS: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional survey over three weeks in November 2023 to determine the national prevalence of scabies and bacterial skin infection. Participants were recruited from ten evaluation units across all five divisions of Kiribati, including severa

Acute Epstein Barr Virus is a risk factor for severe malaria in infants under 24 months.

BACKGROUND: Primary Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) infection occurs during late adolescence and is characterized by the symptomatic manifestation of infectious mononucleosis (IM). Primary EBV infection in malaria-endemic areas often occurs in young children by the age of 2 and is generally asymptomatic. Acute EBV infection in children of this age results in humoral immune suppression to unrelated antigenic challenges for approximately 4 weeks. Whether acute EBV in infants similarly suppresses the development of antibody responses against Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) predisposing infants to severe mala

Risk Factors Associated With Tuberculosis Infection Among Household Contacts of Patients With Microbiologically Confirmed Pulmonary Tuberculosis in 3 High Tuberculosis Burden Countries.

BACKGROUND: Although tuberculosis preventive therapy guidelines support testing for tuberculosis infection in household contacts (HHCs), this adds operational complexity and cost and has often been abandoned. To understand utility of testing, we determined prevalence and risk factors for tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis preventive therapy eligibility among HHCs. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study conducted from July 2021 to September 2022 in Lesotho, South Africa, and Tanzania, we enrolled people with microbiologically confirmed pulmonary tuberculosis and their HHCs. HHCs were screene

Prevalence of non-Plasmodium falciparum species in southern districts of Brazzaville in The Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND: Although Plasmodium falciparum infection is largely documented and this parasite is the main target for malaria eradication, other Plasmodium species persist, and these require more attention in Africa. Information on the epidemiological situation of non-P. falciparum species infections is scarce in many countries, including in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (hereafter Republic of the Congo) where malaria is highly endemic. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and distribution of non-P. falciparum species infections in the region south of Brazzaville. METHOD

Distinctive location of piscine intestinal coccidiosis in Asian seabass fingerlings.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Coccidian infection (coccidiosis) is one of the most important causes of illness and death in the fish population, including Asian sea bass. The fingerling developmental stage is sensitive to various infectious agents. Economic losses are sustained by the sea bass aquaculture industry due to coccidiosis annually. However, the related pathological changes in the Asian sea bass fingerlings' three-part intestine remain unknown. This study aimed to investigate the Asian sea bass fingerlings' infection rate, infection location and site, and specific pathological lesions in the s

ABO Blood Groups Do Not Predict Schistosoma mansoni Infection Profiles in Highly Endemic Villages of Uganda.

Schistosoma mansoni is a parasite which causes significant public-health issues, with over 240 million people infected globally. In Uganda alone, approximately 11.6 million people are affected. Despite over a decade of mass drug administration in this country, hyper-endemic hotspots persist, and individuals who are repeatedly heavily and rapidly reinfected are observed. Human blood-type antigens are known to play a role in the risk of infection for a variety of diseases, due to cross-reactivity between host antibodies and pathogenic antigens. There have been conflicting results on the effect o
