Sixty-three children aged 4 to 17 years were examined by tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry, transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), and otoscopy to evaluate the effects of middle ear pathologies and the associated hearing loss on TEOAEs. TEOAE measures were highly specific (93.8%) in identifying normal ears that passed both audiometric and tympanometric criteria. Long-term outcomes of surgery have been analysed for 684 patients with OMCP in terms of possible implications of the severity and kind of pathological processes in the middle ear as well as the operative procedure on functional and anatomic results of tympanoplasty. Isolated rabbit ears were single-pass perfused with a protein-free medium. Permethrin (0.05-23.5%, w/w) was applied in four distinct ointments. Permethrin, 3-phenoxybenzyl alcohol, 3-phenoxybenzaldehyde, and 3-phenoxybenzoic acid were analysed by HPLC. Permethrin was not detected in the effluent. Not healing trepanation cavities after middle ear surgery were exposed to YAG-Nd laser radiation (1.06 and 1.32 mk). Persistent epidermization and discontinuation of the discharge were achieved in 72% of the patients with postoperative otorrhea. Optimal regimens of laser radiation (wave length, exposition, power) are detailed for various forms of the pathological process.

Serous otitis media is a frequent disorder, as 80-90% of children up to the age of 8 years experience at least one episode of middle ear effusion. A new method for the intraoperative diagnosis of a perilymphatic fistula is presented. A case of severe Pseudomonas perichondritis following a 'fashionable' ear-piercing procedure, performed high on the pinna, is reported. The current vogue for such 'high' ear-piercing, which traverses cartilage rather than the fatty tissue of the ear lobe as in 'traditional' ear-piercing, increases the risk of infection which may produce severe cosmetic deformity.
