Acousto-viscoelastic synergy in sharp-edge micromixers: Hydrodynamic mechanisms and mixing intensification.

While microscale sharp-edge acoustic streaming is relatively effective in Newtonian fluids, its interaction with complex viscoelastic fluids and the intricate hydrodynamic mechanisms remain underexplored. To elucidate this complex hydrodynamics, we developed a 3D fully coupled acousto-viscoelastic multiphysics numerical model, corroborated by fluorescence and micro-particle tracking experiments. By integrating the Oldroyd-B constitutive model with acoustic perturbation and Generalized Lagrangian Mean theories, our model successfully achieves precise decoupling of the background flow, acoustic

Arch-Shaped Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on PTFE, Paper, and Aluminum for Sustainable Energy Harvesting.

The growing adoption of flexible and portable electronic devices has created an increasing need for sustainable power sources that can operate without relying on conventional batteries. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted significant attention due to their ability to convert ambient mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, practical contact-separation TENGs may require additional spacers, elastic supports, or other structural components to maintain repeated contact and separation. This study presents a spacer-free arch-shaped TENG based on a laminated structure consis

PRISM: A phase-resolved equation of state for surface pressure-area isotherms of Langmuir monolayers.

HYPOTHESIS: Surface pressure-area isotherms of Langmuir monolayers encode phase boundaries, molecular packing, coexistence regimes, and elastic response, but their interpretation is still often based on heterogeneous workflows that rely on subjective manual segmentation, noise-sensitive numerical derivatives, and limited uncertainty quantification. A phase-resolved, thermodynamically constrained equation-of-state framework can extract physically interpretable descriptors from quasi-equilibrium monolayer isotherms while keeping model complexity under statistical control. EXPERIMENTS: We introd

PAC-KENReg: An interpretable hypergraph framework capturing nonlinear and dynamic functional connectivity for neuropsychiatric disease diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Hypergraph-based analysis has become a pivotal method for modeling functional connectivity networks to elucidate neuropathological mechanisms in psychiatric disorders. However, existing approaches are constrained by two key limitations: their reliance on linear assumptions, which limits the capture of complex nonlinear interactions among brain regions, and their failure to incorporate the neurophysiological meaning of hyperedge weights. To address these challenges, this study introduces an enhanced hypergraph framework that integrates nonlinear modeling with biologica

Non-invasive respiratory support attenuates lung damage in a murine model of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung disease primarily affecting preterm infants exposed to prolonged oxygen therapy and mechanical ventilation. This study investigates the potential effects of a non-invasive respiratory support strategy, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) on lung function and histopathological changes in a hyperoxia-induced murine model of BPD. The aim is to determine whether non-invasive respiratory support can attenuate lung damage caused by hyperoxia. In this study, mice were exposed to hyperoxia (60% O2) and treated with non-invasive respiratory supp

Predictive Gait Generation Based on Passive Morphology: Kinematic and Kinetic Optimization.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates whether the inherent morphology of a passive dynamic walking system can accurately reproduce human gait kinematics and kinetics and assesses its potential for predictive gait generation. METHODS: A multistage optimization algorithm was implemented to tune monoarticular and biarticular elastic and viscoelastic components representing the quasi-stiffness of lower-limb muscles. The resulting model was evaluated against an open source gait dataset from six healthy adults with comparable body mass and walking speeds. Resemblance was quantified using the coefficie

Intraoperative mechanical characterization of vertebral bone quality during percutaneous kyphoplasty.

Osteoporosis (OP) compromises bone strength and markedly increases the risk of vertebral compression fractures (VCFs), which are commonly treated with percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP). Although bone mineral density (BMD) is widely used to diagnose OP and inform surgical planning, it primarily reflects bone mass rather than mechanical competence. Here, we propose an intraoperative method that derives a bulk-modulus-like mechanical index, κ, from the balloon pressure-volume response during PKP. This method enables direct mechanical assessment of vertebral bone quality without additional surgical t

Three-dimensional analysis of facial soft-tissue movement during mastication in children with lip incompetence.

Lip incompetence is an esthetic orthodontic problem, but its functional relevance during mastication remains unclear. This study aimed to develop an objective system for assessing three-dimensional facial dynamics during mastication and to compare facial soft-tissue coordination and lip-closure force between individuals with and without lip incompetence. Thirty-nine children aged 6-12 years were classified into a lip-incompetence group (n = 16) and a control group (n = 23). Participants chewed gum unilaterally while 3D facial images were recorded. A homologous wire-mesh model was generated for

The Role of Ecological and Complex Gait and Postural Tasks in the Assessment of Subtle Deficits in Parkinson's Disease.

Background/Objectives: Postural and gait assessment is essential in the clinical evaluation of people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD). However, conventional clinical assessments may lack the complexity required to uncover subtle deficits, particularly in individuals who compensate well under controlled conditions but struggle in daily life. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the incorporation of ecologically relevant postural and gait tasks into a controlled experimental environment enhances the detection of subtle motor deficits in PwPD, and to examine the ability of these tasks to

Beyond Upper Airway Involvement: Evidence of Intrinsic Lung Disease in a Mouse Model of Mucopolysaccharidosis I.

Almost all patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) develop respiratory dysfunction of varying severity during disease progression. While respiratory disease in MPS has traditionally been attributed to upper airway obstruction caused by glycosaminoglycan (GAG) accumulation in the trachea and bronchi, involvement of the intrapulmonary conducting airways and lung parenchyma remains poorly defined. Here, we characterised lung disease in a mouse model of MPS I using a combination of non-invasive X-ray Velocimetry (XV) functional lung imaging and gold-standard flexiVent respiratory mechanics testi

Ventricular Arterial Coupling as a Marker of Early Cardiotoxicity in Survivors of Childhood Cancer.

Improved childhood cancer survival has been accompanied by substantial late morbidity and mortality related to cardiotoxic cancer therapies. We conducted a retrospective study of childhood cancer survivors (CCS) diagnosed before age 21 and followed at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM). Collected data included demographics, cancer diagnosis and treatment details, medical history, and ambulation status. Initial and most recent echocardiograms obtained at CHAM were reviewed to calculate arterial elastance (Ea), end-systolic elastance (Ees), and ventricular-arterial coupling (VAC). Meas

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube coating effect on bacterial resistance and Ti6Al4V substrate material properties.

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CI-CNT) coatings have emerged as a promising biomaterial infection prevention strategy due to their inherent topography-driven bacterial resistance. This study examined the impact of CI-CNT manufacturing methods, specifically the use of a hydrogen versus an argon carrier gas environment, on the mechanical properties and bacterial resistance of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) coated substrates. Tensile and torsional testing, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and fracture profile analysis were used to characterize variations in substrate yield strength, ultimate tensi

Discriminating Relapsing-Remitting From Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Using Multidimensional Speech Biomarkers: An Independent Cohort Validation Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Differentiating relapsing-remitting from progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) remains a clinical challenge, often requiring complex or invasive biomarkers. This study aimed to develop a machine learning model using acoustic speech analysis to classify MS phenotypes. METHOD: A cohort of 300 consecutive people with MS (PwMS) provided speech recordings. Forty-four acoustic features were extracted. An elastic net model first identified the most relevant parameters from the development cohort (n = 200), which were then used to train six supervised ML classifiers. During the va

Deformation and phase transformation of dual-phase Ti under tension and compression process.

CONTEXT: This study utilizes molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to investigate polycrystalline dual-phase titanium (DP Ti) deformation behavior and phase transformation under tensile and compressive loading. The analysis focuses on the influence of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) phase fraction, strain rate, and temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution. The results indicate that increasing the HCP phase fraction enhances the elastic modulus (36.5%), yield strength, and strain hardening while maintaining acceptable ductility. The optimal mechanical performance is achi

Quantitative Analyses of Cerebral Hemodynamics and Wave Dynamics in Essential Systemic Hypertension: A Multiscale Computational Modeling Study.

Hypertension-induced alterations in hemodynamics and wave dynamics are important pathological mechanisms for cerebrovascular diseases, vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. However, fundamental understanding of hemodynamics and wave dynamics in hypertension remains limited due to the restricted temporal and spatial resolution of current medical devices. To address the gap, this study developed a closed-loop multiscale computational modeling framework for the entire cardiovascular system. A novel "parameter assignment method" designed for diverse 0D peripheral vascular bed models across t

Silk fibroin-based hydrogels with low hysteresis, self-adhesion, and tunable ionic conductivity for wearable devices.

Silk Fibroin (SF) hydrogels are easy to functionalize and possess biocompatibility, making them highly promising for the development of flexible electronic devices and wearable equipment. However, fabricating SF-based hydrogels with multiple functions such as low hysteresis, self-adhesion, and high elasticity, while constructing flexible wearable electronic devices with high sensitivity and fidelity, remains a challenge to date. To address these issues, this work reports a one-step preparation of a fully polymer-based triple-network hydrogel through precursor solution pH pre-regulation, with p…
