Short-term residential exposure to air pollution and risk of acute myocardial infarction deaths at home in China.

Air pollution remains a major threat to cardiovascular health and most acute myocardial infarction (AMI) deaths occur at home. However, currently established knowledge on the deleterious effect of air pollution on AMI has been limited to routinely monitored air pollutants and overlooked the place of death. In this study, we examined the association between short-term residential exposure to China's routinely monitored and unmonitored air pollutants and the risk of AMI deaths at home. A time-stratified case-crossover analysis was undertaken to associate short-term residential exposure to air po

Effect of neighbourhood greenness on the association between air pollution and risk of stroke first onset: A case-crossover study in shandong province, China.

BACKGROUND: Higher neighbourhood greenness is associated with beneficial health outcomes, and short-term exposure to air pollution is associated with an elevated risk of stroke onset. However, little is known about their interactions. METHODS: Daily data on stroke first onset were collected from 20 counties in Shangdong Province, China, from 2013 to 2019. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were calculated for each individual at the village or community lev

Exploring the association of PM2.5 with lung cancer incidence under different climate zones and socioeconomic conditions from 2006 to 2016 in China.

Air pollution generated by urbanization and industrialization poses a significant negative impact on public health. Particularly, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has become one of the leading causes of lung cancer mortality worldwide. The relationship between air pollutants and lung cancer has aroused global widespread concerns. Currently, the spatial agglomeration dynamic of lung cancer incidence (LCI) has been seldom discussed, and the spatial heterogeneity of lung cancer's influential factors has been ignored. Moreover, it is still unclear whether different socioeconomic levels and climate

Hydrologic and water quality performance of a subsurface gravel wetland treating stormwater runoff.

Subsurface gravel wetlands are an emerging type of green infrastructure that can be used to manage stormwater through the capture and slow release of runoff. They are unique to other types of green infrastructure in that they have a distinct fully saturated gravel layer below an occasionally saturated soil layer that influences pollutant removal processes. While they have been widely applied to treat wastewater, our understanding of their efficiency in treating stormwater with variable pollutant inputs is limited. To fill this gap, this study monitored the flow and water quality (total suspend

Associations between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and site-specific cancer mortality: A nationwide study in Brazil between 2010 and 2018.

Long-term exposure to PM2.5 has been linked to lung cancer incidence and mortality, but limited evidence existed for other cancers. This study aimed to assess the association between PM2.5 on cancer specific mortality. An ecological study based on the cancer mortality data collected from 5,565 Brazilian cities during 2010-2018 using a difference-in-differences approach with quasi-Poisson regression, was applied to examine PM2.5-cancer mortality associations. Globally gridded annual average surface PM2.5 concentration was extracted and linked with the residential municipality of participants in

Disparities in air quality downscaler model uncertainty across socioeconomic and demographic indicators in North Carolina.

Studies increasingly use output from the Environmental Protection Agency's Fused Air Quality Surface Downscaler ("downscaler") model, which provides spatial predictions of daily concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) at the census tract level, to study the health and societal impacts of exposure to air pollution. Downscaler outputs have been used to show that lower income and higher minority neighborhoods are exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 and lower levels of O3. However, the uncertainty of the downscaler estimates remains poorly characterized, and it is not known

Air pollution enhance the progression of restrictive lung function impairment and diffusion capacity reduction: an elderly cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Some evidences have shown the association between air pollution exposure and the development of interstitial lung diseases. However, the effect of air pollution on the progression of restrictive ventilatory impairment and diffusion capacity reduction is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on the change rates of total lung capacity, residual volume, and diffusion capacity among the elderly. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, single-breath helium dilution with the diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide was performed once per year

Association between Long-Term Air Pollution, Chronic Traffic Noise, and Resting-State Functional Connectivity in the 1000BRAINS Study.

BACKGROUND: Older adults show a high variability in cognitive performance that cannot be explained by aging alone. Although research has linked air pollution and noise to cognitive impairment and structural brain alterations, the potential impact of air pollution and noise on functional brain organization is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between long-term air pollution and traffic noise with measures of functional brain organization in older adults. We hypothesize that exposures to high air pollution and noise levels are associated with age-like changes in functiona

Long-term air pollution exposure and COVID-19 case-severity: An analysis of individual-level data from Switzerland.

Several studies are pointing out that exposure to elevated air pollutants could contribute to increased COVID-19 mortality. However, literature on the associations between air pollution exposure and COVID-19 severe morbidity is rather sparse. In addition, the majority of the studies used an ecological study design and were applied in regions with rather high air pollution levels. Here, we study the differential effects of long-term exposure to air pollution on severe morbidity and mortality risks from COVID-19 in various population subgroups in Switzerland, a country known for clean air. We pe

Persistent organic pollutant exposures among Greenlandic adults in relation to lifestyle and diet: New data from the ACCEPT cohort.

High concentrations of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in blood of the Greenlandic population are well known. The exposure is mainly through traditional food intake, including marine mammals and seabirds. The present study aimed to follow up on POP concentrations (organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and halogenated flame retardants (HFRs)) and relations to lifestyle and diet of the mothers included in the Greenlandic ACCEPT cohort (3-5 years after inclusion in 2013-15) and to include the children's fathers. A comparative study in healthy and diabetic mice followed the exposure of polystyrene microplastics: Differential lipid metabolism and inflammation reaction.

Human exposure to microplastics (MPs) continues to occur due to ingestion of contaminated food, water and air. Intake of MPs can pose potential health risks by interfering with the production and circulation of nutrients, leading to physiological stress (such as immune responses and metabolic abnormalities). Toxicity data of MPs based on healthy individuals may not be applicable to large populations of patients with chronic diseases represented by diabetes. Therefore, in this study, the response of diabetic mice was compared with that of healthy mice after exposure to polystyrene microplastics

Short-term exposure to ambient nitrogen dioxide and increased hospitalization burden for depression in China: a multicity analysis.

Evidence for the increased hospitalization burden, including admissions, expenditures and length of hospital stay (LOS) for depression attributable to ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is lacking. We investigated the associations between short-term exposure to ambient NO2 and attributable admissions, hospitalization expenditures and LOS for depression in 57 Chinese cities during 2013-2017 using a well-established two-stage time-series study approach. Short-term exposure to ambient NO2 was associated with significantly increased admissions, hospitalization expenditures and LOS for depression, and

The Long-Term Impact of COVID-19 Lockdowns in Istanbul.

The World Health Organization (WHO) have set sustainability development goals to reduce diseases, deaths, and the environmental impact of cities due to air pollution. In Istanbul, although average pollutant concentrations have been on a downward trend in recent years, extreme values and their annual exceedance numbers are high based on the air quality standards of WHO and the EU. Due to COVID-19 lockdowns, statistically significant reductions in emissions were observed for short periods. However, how long the effect of the lockdowns will last is unknown. For this reason, this study aims to inv

Air Pollution and Home Blood Pressure: The 2021 Athens Wildfires.

INTRODUCTION: Fine particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter < 2.5 μm (PM2.5) in the ambient air has been associated with increased blood pressure (BP) levels and new-onset hypertension. However, the association of BP with a sudden upsurge of PM2.5 in extreme conditions has not yet been demonstrated. AIM: To evaluate the association between PM2.5 pollutants the week before, during, and the week after the 2021 wildfires in Athens (Greece) and home BP measurements. METHODS: Home BP measurements were performed, and the readings were transferred to the doctor's office through a telemonitor

Health Impact of Environmental Tobacco Smoke in the Horne.

Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) can be a major constituent of air pollution in indoor environments, including the home. Regulation on smoking in the workplace and public places has made the home the dominant unregulated source of ETS, with important potential impacts on children. Between 40% and 60% of cbildren in the United Kingdom are exposed to ETS in the home. Many experimental and human and studies have investigated the adverse health effects of ETS. Substantial evidence shows that in adults ETS is associated with increased risk of chronic respiratory illness, including lung cancer, nas

Effects of short-term personal exposure to air pollution on platelet mitochondrial DNA methylation levels and the potential mitigation by L-arginine supplementation.

The potential effect of short-term exposure to air pollution on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) methylation remains to be explored. This study adopted an experimental exposure protocol nested with an intervention study on L-arginine (L-Arg) supplementation among 118 participants. Participants walked along a traffic road for 2 hours in the last day of a 14-day intervention to investigate the effects of short-term personal exposure to air pollution on platelet mtDNA methylation and the possible modifying effects of L-Arg supplementation. Results showed that short-term personal exposure to air pollutan
