Otolith Function Testing.

Two technically simple tests, vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) and subjective visual vertical/horizontal (SVV/H) test, have the potential to transform otolith function testing from the research laboratory to the outpatient clinic. Cervical- and ocular-VEMPs are short latency surface potentials produced through the activation of saccular and utricular afferents by sound and vibration. They are tests of dynamic otolith function. The SVV/H test in peripheral lesions probes static asymmetries in utricular function and represents a perceptual error in perceived gravitational vertical/hor

The Evidence for Selective Loss of Otolithic Function.

Recent advances in vestibular testing now permit functional testing of all peripheral vestibular sense organs (all three semicircular canals, utricle, and saccule). This makes it possible to identify patients with isolated dysfunction of the utricle or saccule, even though parallel pathways for vestibular information are ultimately integrated centrally. Selective, isolated unilateral loss of utricular function as measured by ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) has been observed in patients with normal semicircular canal function as measured by the video head impulse test of al

[Epidemiology and newborns universal hearing screening].

Epidemiology and newborns universal hearing screening, The value and benefits of newborns' systematic hearing screening is no longer debated; one in a thousand children is born deaf. France, being behind in this field, made this screening mandatory in April 2012, giving to the Regional Health Agencies the duty and care to organise this screening within a period of two years. Therefore, theoretically, in all French maternities, hearing signs are sought in all newborns using the detection of otoacoustic emissions or the recording of auditory evoked potentials. Suspected children are then sent pr…

Neuroprognostication postcardiac arrest: translating probabilities to individuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Predicting neurological recovery in patients who are comatose after cardiac arrest is an important activity during postarrest care, and this prediction can affect survival. As no early test or clinical finding perfectly predicts potential for recovery, guidelines recommend using data from multiple examinations or tests to estimate patient prognosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies reported accuracy of initial clinical examination, progression of clinical examination, early (<24 h) brain imaging, electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials, later (>24 h) brain imaging, blood ma…

Motor cortical excitability during voluntary inhibition of involuntary tic movements.

BACKGROUND: Tics can be voluntarily inhibited. However, the neurophysiology of voluntary tic inhibition remains underexplored. The objective of this study was to explore state-dependent effects of voluntary tic inhibition on M1 excitability. METHODS: Neurophysiological assessments (single motor-evoked potentials, corticospinal recruitment curves, short-interval intracortical inhibition, H-reflex) were performed in 14 adults with Tourette syndrome during voluntary tic inhibition and free ticcing. Regressions between behavioral performance and neurophysiological measures were also performed. R…

The brain frequency tuning function for facial emotion discrimination: An ssVEP study.

Steady-state visual evoked potentials have only been applied recently to the study of face perception. We used this method to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of expression perception in the human brain and test the prediction that, as in the case of identity perception, the optimal frequency for facial expression would also be in the range of 5-6 Hz. We presented facial expressions at different flickering frequencies (2-8 Hz) to human observers while recording their brain electrical activity. Our modified adaptation paradigm contrasted blocks with varying expressions versus blocks with…

Adult-onset Krabbe disease presenting with an isolated form of peripheral neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Adult-onset Krabbe disease is clinically rare and usually affects the pyramidal tracts in the central nervous system. Patients … ong the optic radiations, which was associated with asymptomatic, mild, prolonged latency on visual evoked potentials. Laboratory analysis documented low enzyme activity of galactocerebrosidase (GALC) and a known mutation of the GALC gene. CONCLUSION: Isolated peripheral neuropathy occurs very rarely in adult-onset Krabbe disease. Muscle Nerve 54: 152-157, 2016.

Low-contrast response deficits and increased neural noise in children with autism spectrum disorder.

A battery of short-duration neurophysiological tests were designed and implemented using visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to examine specific neural mechanisms in children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Contrast-sweep conditions (bright or dark isolated-checks) were used to elicit steady-state VEPs to examine the integrity of ON/OFF pathways. Children with ASD displayed deficits in low-contrast responses at the stimulus frequency of 12.5 Hz, notably under conditions that emphasized activity in the magnocellular pathway. Signal-to-noise ratios were weaker in the ASD group, part…

Sensory tricks and brain excitability in cervical dystonia: a transcranial magnetic stimulation study.

BACKGROUND: Sensory tricks such as touching the face with fingertips often improve cervical dystonia [CD]. This study is to determine whether sensory tricks modulate motor cortex excitability, assessed by paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation [p-pTMS]. METHODS: Eight patients with rotational CD underwent p-pTMS, at rest and when the sensory trick was applied. To test intracortical inhibition [ICI] and facilitation [ICF], the amplitude ratio between conditioned and unconditioned cortical motor evoked potentials was measured at several interstimulus intervals (ISI 1, 3, 15, and 20 ms) …

Spinal cord function monitoring during endovascular treatment of thoracoabdominal aneurysms: implications for staged procedures.

AIM: Spinal cord ischemia is a well-known complication in the treatment of thoracoabdominal aneurysms (TAAA). Despite the fact that endovascular treatment of TAAA is less invasive, spinal cord ischemia rate is not reduced if compared to open repair. METHODS: We report the results of our experience of spinal cord function monitoring by measuring motor evoked potentials (MEP) during endovascular treatment of TAAA type II and III. Depending on the level of the MEPs the decision is made whether to stage the procedure or not. We treated ten patients according to this protocol. RESULTS: In two pat…

OPA1 promotes pH flashes that spread between contiguous mitochondria without matrix protein exchange.

The chemical nature and functional significance of mitochondrial flashes associated with fluctuations in mitochondrial membrane potential is unclear. Using a ratiometric pH probe insensitive to superoxide, we show that flashes reflect matrix alkalinization transients of ∼0.4 pH units that persist in cells permeabilized in ion-free solutions and can be evoked by imposed mitochondrial depolarization. Ablation of the pro-fusion protein Optic atrophy 1 specifically abrogated pH flashes and reduced the propagation of matrix photoactivated GFP (paGFP). Ablation or invalidation of the pro-fission Dyn
