PURPOSE: Evaluation of digitized chest x-ray for the detection of pulmonary infiltrations in bone marrow transplant patients during aplasia.
METHODS: Digitized chest x-rays of 40 patients (21 female, 19 male) with "Fever of unknown origin" (FUO) were evaluated concerning radiological signs of pulmonary infiltrations and correlated to clinical findings, blood chemistry, microbiology and bronchoscopy. Additionally, an individual risk profile was established.

Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by Naegleria fowleri is a rare and deadly disease that requires prompt treatment with multiple therapies. Although N. fowleri previously was only found in warmer areas, climate change appears to be contributing to its geographic spread. Clinicians should consider PAM when faced with a patient with meningitis, especially if the patient participates in outdoor water activities or practices nasal rinsing.

Candidemia is one of the most frequent opportunistic mycoses worldwide. Limited epidemiological studies in Latin America indicate that incidence rates are higher in this region than in the Northern Hemisphere. Diagnosis is often made late in the infection, affecting the initiation of antifungal therapy. Aspergillus infection of the petrous apex is a rare and devastating condition. To date, only two such cases have been reported, which resulted from direct extension of chronic Aspergillus otitis media. We present a case of petrous apex aspergillosis occurring years after surgical drainage of a petrous apex granuloma cyst. Because of the potential lethal nature of this condition, aggressive surgical therapy should be considered early in this illness and may provide the best chance for survival.

Zygomycosis is a highly aggressive infection observed in immunocompromised patients, such as those with haematological malignancies. The sites most frequently involved are the sinuses and the lungs. New diagnostic tools and new antifungal treatments are essential in order to diagnose early and treat efficiently infections due to moulds. We report a case of sinusitis due to Absidia corymbifera occurring during chemotherapy-induced bone marrow aplasia in a patient with acute leukaemia. The sinusitis was successfully treated with AmBisome, and surgical debridement.
