BACKGROUND: The paediatric flatfoot is a common presentation but it is unclear whether the condition will resolve on its own as the child gets older or whether treatment is required. Therefore, the study objective was to evaluate paediatric foot posture, and anthropometry, in children at two time points, three years apart.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 1032 healthy children (505 boys, 527 girls; aged 5-11 years) was recruited for foot posture index (FPI) and anthropometry assessment (weight, height and body mass index, BMI). Assessment was repeated when the children were aged 8 years to 1…

BACKGROUND: Sciatica-related Foot Drop is a peripheral nervous condition that produces a loss of power in the ankle dorsiflexion muscles. Functional electrical stimulation is a modality of electrical stimulation that produces muscle contraction in a functional movement of the limb. This technique was utilized with positive effects in central nervous afflictions but it is not known whether or not it has any influence in motor recovery following peripheral nervous system problems. This study aims to clarify the effects of functional electrical stimulation on foot drop caused by peripheral nerve …

OBJECTIVE: The Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) classification system was created to encompass demographic changes and expanding techniques of revascularization to perform meaningful analyses of outcomes in the treatment of the threatened limb. The WIfI index is intended to be analogous to the TNM staging system for cancer, with restaging to be done after control of infection and after revascularization. Our goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of WIfI restaging after therapy in the prediction of limb outcomes.
METHODS: Preoperative WIfI scoring was performed prospectively for all…

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, the whole world is being concerned with a major health problem, which is diabetes. A very common symptom of diabetes is the diabetic foot ulcer (DFU). The early detection of such foot complications can protect diabetic patients from any dangerous stages that develop later and may require foot amputation. This work aims at building a mobile thermal imaging system that can be used as an indicator for possible developing ulcers.
METHODS: The proposed system consists of a thermal camera connected to a Samsung smart phone, which is used to acquire thermal images. This thermal…

OBJECTIVE: Interventions that can heal or reduce diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) size may reduce the incidence of infection and amputation, and reduce associated social and economic costs. Many chronic wounds exhibit a degree of hypoxia and this leads to a reduction in healing processes including cell division and differentiation, angiogenesis, infection prevention, and collagen production. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the effects of a device supplying continuous oxygen ambulatory therapy on healing in chronic DFUs.
METHOD: Patients with chronic DFUs from two tertiary referral hospital…

BACKGROUND: Acute bilateral foot drop is a rare clinical presentation.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 77-year-old male presented with acute bilateral weakness of the foot and ankle dorsiflexion. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine revealed ligamentum flavum hypertrophy, as well as a mass lesion that appeared hyperintense on T1-weighted images and hypointense on T2-weighted images. Emergent decompressive laminectomy and hemorrhagic synovial cyst excision were performed. Histopathologic examination of the tissue revealed a synovial cyst with hemorrhage.
CONCLUSION: Here, we describe a unique c…

The identification of indicators for severe HFMD is critical for early prevention and control of the disease. With this goal in mind, 185 severe and 345 mild HFMD cases were assessed. Patient demographics, clinical features, MRI findings, and laboratory test results were collected. Gradient boosting tree (GBT) was then used to determine the relative importance (RI) and interaction effects of the variables. Results indicated that elevated white blood cell (WBC) count > 15 × 109/L (RI: 49.47, p < 0.001) was the top predictor of severe HFMD, followed by spinal cord involvement (RI: 26.62, p < 0.0

Human echovirus 18 (E-18) is a member of the enterovirus B species. To date, sixteen full-length genome sequences of E-18 are available in the GenBank database. In this study, we describe the complete genomic characterization of two E-18 strains isolated in Yunnan, China. Pairwise comparisons of the nucleotide sequences and the deduced amino acid sequences revealed that the two Yunnan E-18 strains had 87.5% nucleotide identity and 96.3-96.5% amino acid identity with the Chinese strain. Phylogenetic and bootscanning analyses revealed the two E-18 strains had the highest identity with other seve

Coxsackievirus A16 (CA16), which primarily causes hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), is associated with complications, such as encephalitis, acute flaccid paralysis, myocarditis, pericarditis, and shock. However, no case of pancreatitis associated with CA16 has been reported in children. We report a case of CA16-associated acute pancreatitis in a 3-year-old girl with HFMD. She was admitted because of poor oral intake and high fever for 1 day. Maculopapular rashes on both hands and feet and multiple vesicles on the soft palate were observed on physical examination. She was treated conservati…
