A rare case of vulval pilonidal sinus: incidental diagnosis.

A 63-year-old woman presented with a 4-week history of vulval bleeding. On examination, an 8 mm fleshy irregular vascular lesion was present … ere active chronic inflammation. At least five hair follicle shafts surrounded by foreign body type giant cells were also identified within the inflamed area. There was no evidence of dysplasia or malignancy. This chronically inflamed fistulous tract together with hair shafts within the wall of the tract were diagnostic of a pilonidal sinus of the vulva. This …

Tuberculosis cutis orificialis with both gingival involvement and underlying pulmonary tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis cutis orificialis is a rare manifestation of cutaneous tuberculosis which occurs in the oral, perianal and adjacent mucosa. The most frequent orificial lesion location is the tongue. We report a case of a 35-year-old female with tuberculosis cutis orificialis with gingival involvement. She had a six-month history of a moderately painful gingival ulceration. Histopathological examination showed granulomatous infiltrates composed of epithelioid cells, Langhans giant cells and caseating necrosis. A purified protein derivative test was positive. Sputum culture was positive for Mycobac…

Clinically unsuspected thyroid involvement in cysticercosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Disseminated cysticercosis is rare in humans. This case highlights the utility of fine needle aspiration (FNA) in diagnosis of cysticercosis in an unusual site. CASE: A 28-year-old woman underwent FNA from a midline swelling in the neck, clinically suspected to be a nodular goiter or thyroiditis. Giemsa-stained smears revealed a mixed inflammatory infiltrate, foreign body giant cells, and an occasional epithelioid cell granuloma. Thick colloid and occasional clusters of follicular cells were seen. In addition, a single large hooklet, characteristic of cysticercus, and a few calcos…

Partial avulsion of prosthetic aortic valve caused by S. epidermidis infection resulting in a giant false aneurysm of the complete thoracic aorta.

A 69-year-old man was presented with a holosystolic and early diastolic murmur in cardiac auscultation, pretibial edema and elevated inflammation markers. Aortic valve and ascending aorta had been replaced 9 months earlier. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed massive eccentric regurgitation and dehiscence of the aortic valve, resulting in a giant circular false aneurysm with connection to the lumen of the aortic arch. CT and MR confirmed extensive leakage in a covered perforation. The false lumen was confined by a newly formed vessel wall, since the native Aorta ascendens had been excise

Emphysematous cystitis in a chemically-induced diabetic dog.

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare disorder caused by bacterial infection and characterized by gas accumulation within the bladder wall with c … ger receptor, class A, and thought to be myofibroblasts, fibroblasts or macrophages. Multinucleated giant cells were observed around the cysts, and gram-negative short bacilli were observed in the lumen of the urinary bladder. From these findings, this case was diagnosed as emphysematous cystitis.

Adult orbital xanthogranulomatous disease: review of the literature.

This article provides an overview of the pathologic features of adult orbital xanthogranulomatous disease, a rare heterogeneous group of disorders that includes 4 clinical syndromes: adult-onset xanthogranuloma, necrobiotic xanthogranuloma, adult-onset asthma and periocular xanthogranuloma, and Erdheim-Chester disease. The diagnosis is made by biopsy of the lesion, demonstrating tissue infiltration by the hallmarks of xanthoma cells and Touton giant cells. The differential diagnosis is broad, including syndromes within the adult xanthogranulomatous disease category as well as other entities in…

Splenic tuberculosis: a case report.

Splenic tuberculosis is an unusual clinical phenomenon, especially in immunocompetent hosts. It often demonstrates diagnostic complexity, wh … d large areas of caseation surrounded by multiple granulomas of epitheloid cells and Langhan's type giant cells throughout the splenic pulp. PCR verified the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. No primary focus of infection was detected in the lungs or any other organs.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma in the craniocervical junction presenting with severe occipitalgia.

We report a patient who complained of severe occipitalgia caused by destruction of the atlantooccipital joint by tumor invasion. Her symptoms were relieved by tumor resection and occipitocervical fixation. Histological examination of the resected tumor revealed that the tumor cells had an irregular arrangement, remarkable atypia, and pleomorphism with multinucleated bizarre giant cells. The tumor demonstrated no definitive sarcoma differentiation and was identified as malignant fibrous histiocytoma. After tumor resection, the patient received adjuvant radiation and chemotherapy. The tumor regr…

Granulomatous mycosis fungoides responsive to gemcitabine.

We report a 61-year-old woman with a 1-year-history of widespread erythematous scaly patches and plaques as well as red/purplish to brownish confluent plaques. Ulcerated lesions with a purulent, hemorrhagic exudate and sharp elevated borders were located on the lower extremities. Diagnosis of granulomatous mycosis fungoides was supported by histopathologic findings showing an inflammatory reaction with epithelioid and large giant cells associated with features characteristic of mycosis fungoides. Immunohistochemical studies showed a T-helper phenotype of neoplastic cells (CD3+, CD4+, CD45RO+) …

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the larynx presenting with hypoglottic obstruction.

We report a new case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the larynx occurring in a 22-year-old man. The lesion manifested with progressive breathing discomfort and appeared as a polypoid pedunculated mass attached to the subglottic mucosa. Microscopically, it featured numerous mononuclear and multinucleated giant cells surrounding cavernous spaces filled with blood. Foci of proliferating spindle cells and mature osteoid tissue could be recognized. There was no apparent relationship with the cricoid perichondrium. Clinical follow-up was negative for local recurrence. Based on this report and a review of…

Experimental murine paracoccidiodomycosis induced by the inhalation of conidia.

Adult BALB/c mice of both sexes were infected intranasally with 10(6) viable P. brasiliensis conidia. Animals were sacrificed at intervals up to 6 months and studied by histopathology and organ cultures. At the time of challenge lung sections showed that instilled conidia had reached the alveoli; at 12 h such conidia were transforming into yeast cells, with multiple buds appearing by 18 h. Initially, the cellular infiltrate was composed of polymorphonuclear leukocytes; 6 days later, lymphocytes, plasmocytes and macrophages predominated. Multinucleated giant cells appeared only after 6 weeks. T…

T reticular interneurons: a class of serially repeating cells in the zebrafish hindbrain.

We describe a class of reticular neurons, named T interneurons after the branching pattern of their axons, in young larvae of the zebrafish Brachydanio rerio. The cells were identified by filling them with HRP from application sites within the CNS. A serially repeating set of about ten such neurons is present in a longitudinal column on each side of the caudal hindbrain. The T axons project across the midline, and branches course both rostrally and caudally within the medial longitudinal fascicle (mlf). The cells receive synaptic input from the Mauthner neurons, from unidentified axons in the

THE PATHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE TESTES IN EPIDEMIC PNEUMONIA.

The testicular changes in pneumonia are without clinical manifestations, are non-specific, focal in character, independent of the infecting organisms or the antecedent disease, and vary in severity directly with the total length of the illness. The process is a continuous one, divisible into stages in which the following features are recognizable: (1) cessation of spermatogenesis; (2) degeneration of preformed spermatocytes, spermatids, and spermatozoa; (3) desquamation of altered cells and fragments of the same; (4) formation of giant cells in the tubule walls with subsequent liberation into …

Trophoblastic signals facilitate endometrial interferon response and lipid metabolism, ensuring normal decidualization.

The decidua plays a crucial role in providing structural and trophic support to the developing conceptus before placentation. Following embryo attachment, embryonic components intimately interact with the decidual tissue. While evidence indicates the participation of embryo-derived factors in crosstalk with the uterus, the extent of their impact on post-implantation decidual development requires further investigation. Here, we utilize transgenic mouse models to selectively eliminate primary trophoblast giant cells (pTGCs), the embryonic cells that interface with maternal tissue at the forefron…
