Human Insulin Enhances Avobenzone Photostability while Retaining Its Biological Activity.

Human insulin was selected as a model polypeptide to investigate avobenzone photoprotection because of its structural stability, dermatological relevance, and role in diabetes therapy. Avobenzone, a widely used chemical ultraviolet A (UVA) filter, undergoes photodegradation upon UV exposure, limiting its long-term efficacy in sunscreen formulations. This study systematically examined the interaction between insulin and avobenzone to evaluate its effects on photostability, binding behavior, and insulin bioactivity. The UV spectroscopy-based photodegradation studies demonstrated that insulin sig

Trajectory prediction model of diabetes distress in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a 12-month prospective longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Clarifying heterogeneous diabetes distress (DD) trajectories and their predictors from a dynamic perspective is crucial. We aimed to develop a trajectory prediction model for dynamic DD. METHODS: This prospective longitudinal study included 443 adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus who completed the demographics and diabetes characteristics questionnaire, scales measuring lifestyles and psychological factors (at baseline), and the Chinese version of the Diabetes Distress Scale (at baseline and at 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month follow-ups). After identifying the factors associated with

Light exposure-induced circadian rhythm disruption impairs male reproductive health through oxidative stress and apoptosis.

AIMS: Artificial light exposure at night and irregular light schedules are increasingly prevalent environmental stressors in modern society and have been implicated in male reproductive disorders. This study aimed to determine how distinct patterns of circadian rhythm disruption differentially affect male reproductive function and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of male rats were subjected to standard 12-h light/12-h dark cycles (LD), fixed inverted light-dark cycles (DL), and a dynamic alternating light-dark-dark-light cycle (LDDL) designed to indu

Modeling individual self-protective behavior during epidemics.

Protecting public health from infectious diseases requires collective action, as individual behaviors-such as vaccination and mask-wearing-directly influence disease dynamics. During the COVID-19 pandemic, unexpected public responses often undermined the effectiveness of interventions, highlighting the need to understand collective behavioral patterns and motivations to design more effective mitigation strategies. This study presents an agent-based simulation model that captures how individuals adjust self-protective behaviors based on evolving opinions about disease risk and examines how thes

Microsaccade Dynamics Enhance Nodule Detection and Discriminate Reader Expertise Levels During Chest Radiography.

BACKGROUND: Perceptual misses are a major source of diagnostic error in radiology, yet no physiological biomarker currently exists for expertise in chest radiograph interpretation. PURPOSE: To determine whether microsaccade dynamics enhance pulmonary nodule detection and discriminate reader expertise levels during chest radiography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental eye-tracking study, 26 adults (nine naive observers, 11 radiology residents, and six attending radiologists) searched for nodules in 148 chest radiographs from the Japanese Society of Radiological Technology database. Impact of device implantation depth on blood flow dynamics after left atrial appendage closure.

BACKGROUND: Device-related thrombus (DRT) remains a concern after left atrial appendage closure (LAAC), particularly when the device is deeply implanted. However, the mechanistic links between implantation depth, flow dynamics, and DRT risk are not well understood. AIMS: We therefore aimed to evaluate the impact of LAAC device implantation depth on local flow characteristics and its association with DRT using patient-specific computational fluid dynamics (CFD). METHODS: The study included 285 patients undergoing LAAC with either Amplatzer Amulet or WATCHMAN devices at 10 centres. Patient-spe

Kinetic modelling of [⁶⁸Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 PET in pancreaticobiliary lesions: distinguishing cancer from pancreatitis.

PURPOSE: Fibroblast activation protein (FAP)-targeted PET using [⁶⁸Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 visualizes fibroblasts abundant in pancreatic cancer (PC) but also present in pancreatitis, complicating interpretation of static images. Dynamic imaging and kinetic modeling may provide additional insight, but their diagnostic value remains unclear. This study evaluated whether kinetic parameters from dynamic [⁶⁸Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 PET can differentiate PC from pancreatitis and their relationship with standardized uptake value (SUV) and tumor-to-blood ratio (TBR). METHODS: Sixty-one patients with suspected pancreatico

Targeting Extended Thromboprophylaxis after Surgery Through Multidimensional Dynamic Pulmonary Embolism Risk Assessment: Development and Temporal Validation in 4.8 Million Operations.

BACKGROUND: Extended thromboprophylaxis reduces postoperative venous thromboembolism but is inconsistently used because pulmonary embolism (PE) risk varies across operations and may change after discharge. We developed and temporally validated a two-stage calculator to estimate PE risk at discharge and update risk after unplanned readmission or reoperation. STUDY DESIGN: ACS-NSQIP adult operations from 2020-2023 were used for development (n=3,864,605), with 2024 operations reserved for temporal validation (n=956,434). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative PE. Penalized logistic regress

Association Between Lactate Trajectories and Clinical Outcomes in Critically Ill Patients with Sepsis-Associated Liver Injury.

Background: Sepsis-associated liver injury (SALI) is a severe complication of sepsis that significantly increases the risk of mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. While lactate is recognized as a prognostic biomarker for sepsis, the predictive potential of dynamic lactate trajectories in patients with SALI has not been investigated. This study aims to elucidate the association between serum lactate trajectories and clinical outcomes. Methods: Latent class trajectories of serum lactate dynamics were modeled in 524 patients with SALI from the MIMIC-IV dataset. Serum lactate levels we

Contrasting growth phase-dependent microbiota dynamics between dinoflagellates and diatoms.

Bacteria associated with phytoplankton can profoundly influence host physiology and bloom dynamics. Yet it remains poorly understood whether the microbiota of dinoflagellates is restructured across host growth phases, and how such dynamics differ from those of other phytoplankton. Here, we tracked the microbiota of three harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming dinoflagellates (Alexandrium catenella, A. pacificum, Gymnodinium catenatum) and three diatoms (Cylindrotheca closterium, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Coscinodiscus granii), each represented by two strains of distinct spatiotemporal origin and sa
