Input-output (I/O) functions for stimulus-frequency (SFOAE) and distortion-product (DPOAE) otoacoustic emissions were recorded in 30 normal-hearing adult ears using a nonlinear residual method. SFOAEs were recorded at half octaves from 500-8000 Hz in an L1=L2 paradigm with L2=0 to 85 dB SPL, and in a paradigm with L1 fixed and L2 varied. The usual polymorphic central nervous system involvement observed in primary Sjögren's syndrome is classified as monofocal, multifocal or diffuse involvement. We present a case of acute rhombencephalitis associated with hearing loss that could correspond to an intermediate form between diffuse and monofocal involvement. This is a report of three cases of mixed hearing loss that resulted from inner ear disorders. Two cases were unilateral and the third was bilateral. The diagnosis was based on the findings of normal middle and external ears in association with the absence of round window reflexes. The contralateral stapedial reflex was present in the two unilateral cases. This is the first documentation of conductive deafness due to inner ear abnormality. OBJECT: Following shunt placement for treatment of normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), several patients suffered hearing loss. The authors undertook a study to analyze this outcome.
METHODS: Sixteen patients in whom NPH was diagnosed were treated by placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Their hearing was assessed pre- and postoperatively by using pure tone audiometry. Two thirds of the ears tested showed a postoperative hearing loss of more than 10 dB. Recovery of the hearing loss occurred 6 to 12 weeks after shunt placement in 75% of the ears examined.
