Predisposing Factors for Severe Complications after Cataract Surgery: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

We conducted a retrospective group study to evaluate the potential systemic risk factors for major postoperative complications of cataract surgery. Individuals diagnosed with (n = 2046) and without (n = 8184) serious complications after cataract surgery were matched 1:4 for age, sex, and index date obtained using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. The outcome was defined as at least one new inpatient or outpatient diagnosis of systemic disease one year before the index date. The effect of demographic data on postoperative complications was also analyzed in the multivariable

ICD therapy for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death after Mustard repair for d-transposition of the great arteries.

BACKGROUND: Years and decades after the Mustard atrial switch repair for d-Transposition of the great arteries, there is a subset of patients at increased risk for sudden cardiac death due to ventricular tachyarrhythmias. To date, little is known about indications, efficacy and benefit of internal cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) therapy indication in these patients. PATIENTS/METHODS: To characterize the Mustard patients already treated with an ICD, we conducted a single center case control study (n = 41). The charts of all patients after Mustard procedure at our institution were systematical

Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction in reptiles: a comparative study of four species with different lung structures and pulmonary blood pressures.

Low O2 levels in the lungs of birds and mammals cause constriction of the pulmonary vasculature that elevates resistance to pulmonary blood flow and increases pulmonary blood pressure. This hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) diverts pulmonary blood flow from poorly ventilated and hypoxic areas of the lung to more well-ventilated parts and is considered important for the local matching of ventilation to blood perfusion. In the present study, the effects of acute hypoxia on pulmonary and systemic blood flows and pressures were measured in four species of anesthetized reptiles with diverse

Comparative study of autonomic nervous system activity in malnourished and normal children in India.

Information on the relationship between autonomic functions and malnutrition in children is scant. In the present study, autonomic function tests were conducted in 30 normal subjects and 30 malnourished children aged between 5 and 10 years. The tests performed included tests for parasympathetic functions (resting heart rate, standing-to-lying ratio, lying-to-standing ratio and Valsalva ratio) and tests to assess sympathetic function (hand grip test, galvanic skin resistance). The malnourished children had significantly lower mean weights-for-age (-2.6 Z vs -1.5 Z; p = 0.001), heights-for-age (

Cardiac arrhythmias--update 1987.

Arrhythmias may result from abnormalities of impulse initiation (automaticity), conduction (slow conduction, block, reentry), or a combination. The central and peripheral nervous systems have an important influence on the genesis of cardiac arrhythmias. Sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers innervate both atria and ventricle. The study of clinical cardiac arrhythmias includes the use of invasive and noninvasive testing procedures. The ECG, ambulatory monitoring, esophageal recording, exercise testing, and signal averaging techniques are the currently used noninvasive tests. Intracardiac elect

Neurophysiological and biological effects of music-based interventions in ADHD: a mini review.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is increasingly recognized as a lifespan neurodevelopmental condition. Because musical perception and production engage auditory, attentional, motor, emotional, and regulatory systems simultaneously, music-based interventions have emerged as promising complementary approaches for ADHD. However, their underlying neurophysiological and systemic biological correlates remain insufficiently understood. This mini review synthesizes evidence on behavioral, neurophysiological, and biological effects of music-based interventions in ADHD using a narrative

A quality control system for ligand-binding assay of plasma renin activity: Proof-of-concept within a pharmacodynamic study.

While the role of plasma renin activity (PRA) in heart failure has been widely studied in adults, comprehensive data on pediatric heart failure remain lacking. This drawback is increasingly being addressed by academic research. Nevertheless, such pediatric investigations are commonly conducted only once due to ethical constraints. Therefore, the quality of bioanalytical data must be ensured to acquire meaningful insights into maturing humoral parameters. However, appropriate post-validation assessment of bioanalytical runs is currently underrepresented by regulatory guidance. Thus, for applica

Effects of ventricular conduction block patterns on mortality in hospitalized patients with dilated cardiomyopathy: a single-center cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular conduction blocks (VCBs) are associated with poor outcomes in patients with known cardiac diseases. However, the prognostic implications of VCB patterns in dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients need to be evaluated. The purpose of this study was to determine all-cause mortality in patients with DCM and VCB. METHODS: This cohort study included 1119 DCM patients with a median follow-up of 34.3 (19.5-60.8) months, patients were then divided into left bundle branch block (LBBB), right bundle branch block (RBBB), intraventricular conduction delays (IVCD) and narrow QRS grou

A molecular pathway including Id2, Tbx5, and Nkx2-5 required for cardiac conduction system development.

The cardiac conduction system is an anatomically discrete segment of specialized myocardium that initiates and propagates electrical impulses to coordinate myocardial contraction. To define the molecular composition of the mouse ventricular conduction system we used microdissection and transcriptional profiling by serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE). Conduction-system-specific expression for Id2, a member of the Id gene family of transcriptional repressors, was identified. Analyses of Id2-deficient mice demonstrated structural and functional conduction system abnormalities, including lef

Hyperacute effects of non-code dose bolus epinephrine in paediatric cardiac intensive care patients: insights from high-fidelity physiologic data.

BACKGROUND: Non-code dose boluses of epinephrine are utilised in critically ill paediatric patients during periods of hemodynamic deterioration, often with the hopes of preventing a cardiac arrest. Data regarding the physiologic effects of these administrations are limited. The primary aim of this study was to use high-fidelity physiologic data to characterise the effects of intravenous non-code dose bolus epinephrine. METHODS: Paediatric patients in the cardiac ICU who received non-code dose bolus epinephrine were identified. Those who received fluid boluses or chest compressions within 2 mi

Preliminary evidence of cardiac dysfunction in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a catastrophic neurological disorder that typically presents in infancy and early adolescence. Cardiac arrhythmia in SSPE is a significant but often under-recognized complication of the disease. The persistent measles virus infection that characterizes SSPE can have widespread effects on the central nervous system, including areas that regulate autonomic function, which in turn can impact cardiac rhythm. In this article, we aim to comprehensively review articles describing cardiac dysfunction associated with SSPE. METHODS: We conducted a
