Face and/or neck burns: a risk factor for respiratory infection?

Infections are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in burn patients, and almost 50% of infection-related deaths in burn patients are caused by pneumonia. The proportion of facial and/or neck burns (FNB) in burn centre admissions is high, and these patients have a well known respiratory risk. However, it is not well established in the literature if the occurrence of a FNB is a risk factor for respiratory infection during hospitalization. A retrospective, single-centre trial at the burn unit of the Prelada Hospital was conducted, including patients admitted between January 2011 and Decembe

Leadership Perspectives on Hospital at Home and Equity: Broadening Access, Removing Enrollment Barriers, and Adding Value by Addressing Disparities.

BACKGROUND: Hospital at home (HaH) delivers safe and high-quality acute hospital-level care in patients' homes as an alternative to traditional hospital care. As HaH expands across the USA, there remains uncertainty in how HaH program leaders conceptualize equity and how they approach operational challenges affecting equitable delivery of HaH. Our objective was to explore how equity is defined, as well as barriers and strategies to achieving equity in HaH. METHODS: We purposively sampled HaH programs diverse in size, geography, and safety-net status. We conducted semi-structured interviews an

The hospital admission profile of people presenting to specialist addiction services with problematic use of alcohol or opioids: A national retrospective cohort study in England.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade in England the rate of alcohol and opioid-related hospitalisation has increased alongside a simultaneous reduction in people accessing specialist addiction treatment. We aimed to determine the hospitalisation patterns of people presenting to addiction treatment with problematic use of alcohol or opioids, and estimate how individual sociodemographic characteristics and hospital admission diagnoses are associated with the rate of hospitalisation, death and successful completion of addiction treatment. METHODS: A national record linkage between Hospital Episode S

Management of critically ill patients following earthquake disasters.

The devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern Türkiye on February 6, 2023, underscored the profound social and healthcare challenges of large-scale natural disasters. These events highlighted the need for healthcare professionals to be well-prepared and equipped with the expertise to manage such crises effectively. Earthquake-induced trauma presents a wide array of medical and surgical complications, frequently requiring urgent hospitalization and specialized management for critically ill patients. However, the limited availability of comprehensive data and evidence-based guidelines com

Comparing outcomes of operative management of intestinal obstruction due to gallstone ileus using NSQIP database.

INTRODUCTION: Gallstone ileus is an uncommon etiology of intestinal obstruction, although many cases require surgical repair. There is no consensus regarding the necessity of concomitant cholecystectomy. (CCY) at the time of index surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of gallstone ileus in patients with and without CCY. METHODS: Using the ACS NSQIP database from 2005 to 2019, we included patients who underwent surgical management of gallstone ileus (enterolithotomy) with or without CCY. The primary outcomes of interest were surgical site infection (SSI) and 30-day mortality. Addi

Topical Burn Wound Management.

Cutaneous burns challenge global health care systems with high patient morbidity and mortality rates.1 One recent study of adults admitted for 2 to 60 days to a US burn center reported that more than 7.9% of burn patients experienced at least 1 hospital-acquired infection (HAI), extending the hospital length of stay and increasing the likelihood of complications and death.2 Of these HAIs, most (35.8%) were skin and soft tissue infections, followed by respiratory (24.4%), bloodstream (18.1%), and urinary tract (17.8%) infections. A burn covering more than 5% of total body surface area (TBSA) mu

Nondrainage after Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy for Acute Calculous Cholecystitis Does Not Increase the Postoperative Morbidity.

BACKGROUND: It is now established that prophylactic drainage is not needed after laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for chronic calculous cholecystitis. However, the benefit of drains versus their potential harm for acute calculous cholecystitis (ACC) following laparoscopic LC has been questioned. Therefore, we conducted a comparative study to assess the need for drainage. METHODS: Between January 2014 and October 2016, 212 patients with ACC undergoing LC undergo either drainage (n= 106) or no drainage (n= 106). The primary end points were the number of patients with postoperative drain-relate

Trends in diabetes-related lower extremities amputations in Romania-A five year nationwide evaluation.

The aim of the study was to perform a nationwide evaluation of the frequency, incidence and trends of diabetes-related LEA (lower extremities amputations) in Romania. We have retrospectively analysed DRG data (ICD 10 AM codes) from all hospitals in the country, over a 5 year period (2006-2010). Knowing the shortcomings of this approach, we have assumed that our study can serve as a platform for future comparisons. The total number of non-traumatic diabetes related LEA procedures was 24,312, they were performed in 16,873 patients with diabetes, 22.55% with type 1 diabetes, 70.26 with type 2 dia

Indiana continent catheterizable urinary reservoir.

INTRODUCTION: Radical pelvic surgery requires continent or incontinent urinary diversion. There are many techniques, but the orthotopic neobladder is the most used. A continent catheterizable urinary reservoir is sometimes a good alternative when this derivation is not possible or not indicated. This paper has aimed to present our experience with the Indiana pouch continent urinary reservoir. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The series is made up of 85 patients, 66 women and 19 men, with a mean age of 56 years (31-77 years). Variables analyzed were operating time, estimated blood loss, transfusion rate,
