BACKGROUND: Insecticide-treated durable wall lining (DL) is a new method of vector control designed to supplement LLINs and overcome two inherent limitations of LLINs and IRS: nightly behavioural compliance and short residual activity, respectively. DL is a deltamethrin-treated polyethylene material, which when used to cover interior house walls, functions as long-lasting IRS. Because the DL concept anticipates minimal upkeep, a primary challenge is how to guarantee correct household installation and in situ longevity for several years. Field trials were undertaken on various wall surfaces in

Plague is a primarily flea-borne rodent-associated zoonosis that is often fatal in humans. Our study focused on the plague-endemic West Nile region of Uganda where affordable means for the prevention of human plague are currently lacking. Traditional hut construction and food storage practices hinder rodent exclusion efforts, and emphasize the need for an inexpensive but effective host-targeted approach for controlling fleas within the domestic environment. Here we demonstrate the ability of an insecticide delivery tube that is made from inexpensive locally available materials to reduce fleas

Home visiting programs have been successful in engaging and enrolling families who are at high risk for stress, depression, and substance abuse. However, many of these mothers may not be receiving mental health services because home visitors lack the knowledge and skills to identify mental health or determine how to appropriately address these problems. In response, a growing number of home visiting programs are expanding their capacity by integrating a mental health provider into their ongoing operations. This approach, referred to as early childhood mental health consultation, involves a par

Most research on the homeless is coming from the US, where the prevalence of mental disorders concerning this population was pointed out. The surveys for the homeless in European countries focus on the mental state and community care of the homeless very early, since the 1980's. Homelessness is gradually developing in these countries, while in the countries of North America the phenomenon is much older. The prevalence of mental disorders in European countries is higher in the homeless population, with rates of 58% -100% compared with the general population. In countries like Germany, Spain, Ho

There is growing public health concern about indoor air quality. Tetrachloroethylene (PERC), a chlorinated volatile organic compound widely used as a solvent in dry cleaning facilities, can be a residential indoor air pollutant. As part of an environmental investigation included in the PARIS (Pollution and asthma Risk: an Infant Study) birth cohort, this study firstly aimed to document domestic PERC levels, and then to identify the factors influencing these levels using standardized questionnaires about housing characteristics and living conditions. Air samples were collected in the child's be…

Hiring and retaining appropriate staff is essential for programs serving those who have experienced chronic homelessness. This paper describes specific staffing challenges and strategies from the Collaborative Initiative to Help End Chronic Homelessness (CICH), an 11-site, multi-agency Federal program designed to serve people experiencing chronic homelessness who also have a disabling condition such as substance use or mental health problems. This paper addresses approaches to staffing including team structures, staff supervision, and training. Challenges identified include low pay, high rates

Homelessness can be seen as a challenge for health psychology in research and practice on several levels: analysing the risks of becoming homeless; the living conditions of being homeless and their impact on health risks and problems; homeless youth as a specific phenomenon; health problems in the context of homelessness; service utilization and barriers and effects of interventions in the context of homelessness. With these levels, a framework is outlined for the contributions to this Special Issue. In the end, homelessness is discussed as an issue for prevention in three respects for a compr

This article discusses the psychosocial impact of displacement using homelessness as an illustrative example of displacement. This article draws on the geography literature concerning the sense of space and place and on social theories of self-identity and belonging, notably Anthony Giddens' structuration theory. The impact of displacement is an important dimension of homelessness because it influences social and functional abilities that are relevant to reentry into homes and society. This article explains the relevance of these considerations in the care of displaced persons and emphasizes t

One of the outcomes of globalization has been a constant increase of the number of people living in the streets of metropolis such as São Paulo: those are not only homeless, but also people who live in the streets and earn their living from it. We have surveyed the institutions working with adult homeless population in the central region of Sao Paulo. Their goals and strategies were described, as well as how they associate with each other. Our main hypothesis is that our reality is still formed by isolated actions, based on mere assistance policies that help to maintain the problem of homeless

Until recently, bed bugs have been considered uncommon in the industrialized world. This study determined the extent of reemerging bed bug infestations in homeless shelters and other locations in Toronto, Canada. Toronto Public Health documented complaints of bed bug infestations from 46 locations in 2003, most commonly apartments (63%), shelters (15%), and rooming houses (11%). Pest control operators in Toronto (N = 34) reported treating bed bug infestations at 847 locations in 2003, most commonly single-family dwellings (70%), apartments (18%), and shelters (8%). Bed bug infestations were re

Many factors contribute to homelessness, including extreme poverty, extended periods of unemployment, disruption of regular sources of income and employment, deinstitutionalization and substance abuse. As a result, the needs of the homeless are both broad and complex. This assessment is based on literature reviews and reviews of local documents and reports. For homeless people, healthcare competes with more immediate needs, such as obtaining adequate food and shelter and it is our duty as a society to help.

Today's approach to health care presents a challenge to those providers who work with patients with multifaceted complex issues that require the time and the efforts of several clinicians. These patients do not easily fit into a short-term, predetermined mold of care. This is an ongoing issue that warrants further investigation. This article presents a collaborative case study that chronicles the case of a patient who had multiple problems, such as homelessness, depression, substance abuse, anger, and serious emotional and physical scars contributing to a damaged self-image. In this case, thre

Homeless women who are pregnant present a number of challenge to health care providers. As a group, they are at risk for a variety of illnesses that could affect their pregnancies, including sexually transmitted diseases and substance abuse. Poor access to health care, inadequate prenatal care, poor nutrition, and poor housing cause these women to suffer poor birth outcomes. They are more likely to deliver low birth weight infants and have higher rates of infant mortality. It should be understood that homeless pregnant women are a heterogenous group. Generally, they are pregnant adolescents an…
