Although congenital digital defects, particularly polydactyly, have been reported frequently in humans, their occurrence in rhesus macaques is relatively rare. We observed two cases of spontaneous digital defects in male rhesus monkey infants recently born at the California Regional Primate Research Center. One infant exhibited bilateral postaxial polydactyly and the other infant had bilateral oligodactyly with unilateral phalangeal duplication. In this report, we present the clinical/pathological details of these cases as well as discuss the embryology of normal and abnormal limb development.

In this review, we discuss recent advances in the study of the pathogenesis of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). Much of the research has involved the use of an animal model of CDH in which diaphragmatic defects are produced in fetal rats by administering the herbicide nitrofen to dams during mid-gestation. Human blood samples were investigated in vitro to observe the antithrombotic effect of water extract of Gynostemma pentaphyllum (GP). The results showed that GP could inhibit significantly the platelet aggregation induced by ADP and compound agonists (P < 0.05), accelerate obviously the disaggregation (P < 0.05) and inhibit effectively the experimental thrombosis (P < 0.05). Cryptosporidium parvum, a coccidian parasite can cause mild or severe self-limiting diarrhea in immunocompetent humans, but chronic and life-threatening in immunocompromised individuals. Heparin and its fractions have often been tested on fresh experimental thrombosis. However in human clinic, drugs are administered not on fresh, but rather on old constituted thrombi. In order to evaluate the effects of antithrombotic agents in these conditions, both drugs (unfractionated heparin and Fraxiparine) were administered on 150 rats at different times and so, could take effect on thrombi with different ages. Evidence has been accumulating indicating a primary role for the lens epithelium in the loss of transparency of the cortex. It was suggested that type II collagen induced arthritis in rats may be considered an experimental model for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) because of clinical, histological, and immunological similarities.
