Granulomatous hepatitis and necrotizing splenitis due to Bartonella henselae in a patient with cancer: case report and review of hepatosplenic manifestations of bartonella infection.

Bacillary angiomatosis and the related disorders of bacillary peliosis hepatis and bacillary splenitis are manifestations of infection with Bartonella henselae and Bartonella quintana in immunocompromised persons. B. henselae infection, but not B. quintana infection, is linked to contact with cats and is presumed to cause visceral cat-scratch disease. We reports a case of visceral infection by B. henselae in an adult patient with cancer who was receiving chemotherapy and had had no contact with a cat or dog. The patient--whose illness was eventually diagnosed on the basis of findings of histol

Cryptococcal meningitis in children in Papua New Guinea: a reminder.

Two young males from Central Province were referred to Port Moresby General Hospital with chronic headaches. In each case the initial impression of tuberculous meningitis needed revision in the light of strongly positive cryptococcal serology. Cryptococcal meningitis occurs with sufficient frequency in Papua New Guinea that it should be considered in cases of raised intracranial pressure, ataxia, cranial neuropathy and visual disturbances. Delay in treatment may be disastrous. In contrast to the developed world where fungal meningitides show a predilection for the immunosuppressed, the experie

Prevention of the acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in rats by the immunomodulating drug leflunomide.

The grafting of immunocompetent allogeneic cells into MHC-discordant, genetically nonresponsive F1 hybrids of inbred rat strains consistently leads to an acute, lethal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). The novel immunomodulating drug leflunomide, which has been shown to be efficacious in animal models of autoimmunity and adverse transplantation reactions, was studied in a rat model of GVHD. It was found that this drug not only was a powerful agent to prevent this otherwise terminal disorder, but was also proficient when used as a therapy of an established GVHD. Since leflunomide has been shown

[Intravenous immunoglobulins in bronchial asthma: a therapeutic alternative?].

Treatment of severe bronchial asthma usually requires the use of steroids. Given the known side effects of steroid treatment, potential alternative therapeutical strategies are currently evaluated; among others, intravenously administered immunoglobulins (ivIg) may be considered. In one study of 5 children with bronchial asthma and IgG subclass deficiency, an improvement of asthma was demonstrated in 4 out of the 5 patients under ivIg treatment over several months. In another study on ivIg treatment in 8 immunocompetent children with steroid-dependent asthma, there also was an improvement of a

Cutaneous findings associated with HIV disease including AIDS: experience from Sub Saharan Africa.

Cutaneous manifestations are common in patients with HIV infection and tend to be more frequent as immunodeficiency progresses. In the initial stage of HIV infection a transient maculopapular-rash may appear. During the otherwise asymptomatic phase that follows, patients may develop seborrhoeic dermatitis, persistent genital ulcer disease, pruritic papular eruption and/or a variety of scaling dermatoses. The most frequent skin tumour associated with HIV disease is Kaposi's sarcoma. Skin manifestations of adverse reactions to a variety of drugs occur more frequently in patients with HIV disease

Lymphadenopathic tumor exhibiting intermingled features of Kaposi's sarcoma, malignant lymphoma, and angiofollicular hyperplasia.

A 56-year-old man presented with an inguinal lymph node enlargement. Histologic study of the tumor revealed three intermingled pathologic lesions: a nodular small cell lymphoma, an angiofollicular hyperplasia of vasculohyaline type, and a vascular neoplasia closely resembling Kaposi's sarcoma. The patient was immunocompetent and denied any homosexual relationships, transfusions, or drug use. The serum was negative for the presence of human immunodeficiency virus antibody. Computed tomographic scan and ultrasound examination revealed no other lymphadenopathies. This case shows that both hyperpl

Gut immunology in fish: a review.

During recent years considerable study has been made of the systemic immune system of fish, although less attention has been paid to local immunity at sites such as the gut, reproductive tract and skin. Recent work on the structure of gut-associated lymphoid tissue and other intestinal cell populations, the absorption of macromolecules from the intestinal lumen and the production of specific mucosal antibodies strongly suggests, however, that the gut of these lower vertebrates is immunocompetent. This review briefly deals with current concepts on the nature of gut-associated lymphoid tissues a

DF-2 bacteremia following cat bites. Report of two cases.

DF-2 is a recently described gram-negative bacillus known to be part of the normal flora of dogs. A variety of serious infections (bacteremia, endocarditis, meningitis, cellulitis) caused by DF-2 have occurred following dog bites. Asplenic patients appear to be especially susceptible to DF-2 infection. Two cases of DF-2 bacteremia occurring after domestic cat bites are reported. Sepsis and meningitis developed in an asplenic patient, and an immunocompetent patient presented with primary cellulitis. Both patients responded promptly to parenteral antibiotic therapy. DF-2 must now be considered a

Screening for coinfection with Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Oregon public health clinic patients.

During 1984, we screened 1,710 local public health clinic patients for Giardia and Cryptosporidium. Six patients (0.35 per cent) were positive for Cryptosporidium, and 214 (12.5 per cent) were positive for Giardia. One patient was positive for both parasites. In contrast to other reported studies, no evidence was found for an association between the two parasites (odds ratio = 1.39, 95 per cent CI 0.16, 11.8). The apparent prevalence of Cryptosporidium in our study population was lower than has been reported previously. More laboratory screening could contribute to a better understanding of th

Deficiency of the autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease.

The proliferative response of T lymphocytes when cocultured with autologous non-T cells in the absence of any other stimulating substance has been termed the autologous mixed lymphocyte reaction (AMLR). The AMLR has been shown to be impaired in several autoimmune disorders, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, and primary biliary cirrhosis. In this study we report marked deficiency in the AMLR in two autoimmune disorders: Hashimoto's and Graves' diseases. This impaired AMLR, probably related to previously described T cell subset imbalances, provides further evidence of alt

Antigen-specific suppressor T lymphocytes in human lymphatic filariasis.

Immune responses to parasite antigens are much lower in patients with microfilaremia than in persons with other manifestations of brugian filariasis. To determine whether hyporeactivity is associated with changes in populations of lymphocytes that regulate immune responses, we quantitated helper and suppressor T cells in the blood of patients infected with Brugia malayi. Increased numbers of suppressor T cells were present in 15 of 17 patients with microfilaremia and in six of 11 patients with elephantiasis. This increase correlated with hyporeactivity to filarial antigens but not to nonparasi

[Autoimmune diseases of the salivary glands].

The structural and functional features of the salivary glands and their function associated with the immunocompetent system are described. The disturbance of such association, in the author's opinion, is conducive to the development of a peculiar tumour pathology (adenolymphomas) and autoimmune processes (Sjögren syndrome autoimmune parotitis). Based on the data from the literature two forms of this disease are distinguished: (1) a distinct nosological form developing as a result of various exo- and endogenous injuries, and (2) manifestations of other diseases, as a rule, of the autoimmune gen

A novel mouse cell line model reveals the tumor intrinsic and immune characteristics of EGFR-mutant lung cancer.

Background: Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations occur frequently in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). However, the lack of practical preclinical models has limited our understanding of how EGFR mutations reshape the tumor immune microenvironment. Methods: EGFRE19del/E19del; Trp53-/- (EP) cell lines were established from a human EGFR exon 19 deletion mutated genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM). These cell lines were applied to generate orthotopic tumors in both immunodeficient and immunocompetent mice. Drug sensitivity assays were performed to evaluate responses to Osimertinib. Mu

ZIKV NS3 disrupts Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense and drives vascular smooth muscle cell damage and vascular dysfunction.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been linked to vascular complications, yet the basis of vascular injury after apparent clearance of circulating virus remains poorly understood. This study examined the temporal progression of ZIKV-associated vascular damage and defined the contribution of non-structural protein 3 (NS3) to oxidative stress-mediated vascular dysfunction. ZIKV infection was modeled in interferon-α/β receptor-deficient A129 mice and immunocompetent northern pig-tailed macaques ( Macaca leonina). Vascular pathology and function were evaluated using histopathology, transmission elect

Interferon-gamma autoantibodies in patients with infectious uveitis: a pilot case-control study.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the association between infectious uveitis in immunocompetent individuals and adult-onset immunodeficiency (AOID). METHODS: A pilot prospective observational case-control study was conducted involving 28 patients with infectious uveitis unrelated to human immunodeficiency virus (non–HIV). These patients were categorized into two groups: Cytomegalovirus (CMV)–associated uveitis (n = 15) and non–CMV infectious uveitis (n = 13). Blood donors (n = 41) served as controls to establish the positivity threshold for interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) autoantibodies. Autoantibody and ne

Efficacy of intradermal plus intramuscular Recombinant hepatitis B vaccination in vaccine nonresponders.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the antibody response of intradermal (ID) plus intramuscular (IM) recombinant hepatitis B vaccination in individuals with inadequate immune response despite vaccination. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study included individuals aged ≥18 years who had previously completed the primary 3-dose vaccination course for hepatitis B and had anti-HBs titers <10 mlU/ml. Participants were administered a double dose of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine (5 microgram ID+35 microgram IM) at months 0, 1, and 6. Quantitative anti-HBs titers were assessed at months

Interim Estimates of 2024-2025 COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Among Adults Aged ≥18 Years - VISION and IVY Networks, September 2024-January 2025.

COVID-19 vaccination averted approximately 68,000 hospitalizations during the 2023-24 respiratory season. In June 2024, CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended that all persons aged ≥6 months receive a 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccine, which targets Omicron JN.1 and JN.1-derived sublineages. Interim effectiveness of 2024-2025 COVID-19 vaccines was estimated against COVID-19-associated emergency department (ED) or urgent care (UC) visits during September 2024-January 2025 among adults aged ≥18 years in one CDC-funded vaccine effectiveness (VE) network, against COVI

Spatial Phenotype of the Mast Cell Population in Endometritis of Various Severities.

Endometritis features an inflammatory milieu in the endometrium, accompanied by the recruitment of immunocompetent cells, including mast cells (MCs). The mechanisms underlying MC involvement in chronic endometritis (CE) and fibrous niche formation remain poorly understood, particularly regarding spatial intercellular interactions in situ. In this study, we used multiplex immunohistochemistry and quantitative immunofluorescence analysis to map the spatial phenotype of MC distribution. Standard histochemical techniques, monoplex and multiplex immunohistochemical staining technologies, light-fiel

EBV-associated smooth muscle tumour: a clinicopathological and genetic study of nine cases revealing heterogeneous immune statuses and novel pathogenic mutations.

AIMS: EBV-associated smooth muscle tumour (EBV-SMT) is a rare neoplasm, primarily affecting patients with HIV, post-transplantation (PT), and congenital immunodeficiency (CI). Most EBV-SMT cases were reported by case reports, and genetic analyses are limited. Herein, we describe nine patients with EBV-SMTs to further expand the clinicopathological and genetic spectrum of EBV-SMT. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine patients with EBV-SMTs were identified from 2008 to 2024, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed in six cases with available material. The study comprised four males and five fem

Intra-host diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in children with long-term and short-term excretion in nasopharyngeal samples.

BACKGROUND: The intra-host diversity of SARS-CoV-2 in pediatric populations remains insufficiently studied. To address this significant knowledge gap, the present study investigates the intra-host variability of SARS-CoV-2 in both immunocompetent and immunodeficient children, including those with severe cases. The research encompasses both short-term and long-term infections, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of viral dynamics in these vulnerable groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed 47 pediatric COVID-19 patients: 37 with short-term infections and 10 with long-term
