We present the results of comparative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2, MMP-8, MMP-9; IL-1β and IL-6; tissue inhibitors of MMP (TIMP-1, TIMP-2), and TNF-α. Cryptosporidium parvum can be regarded as a minimally invasive mucosal pathogen, since it invades surface epithelial cells that line the intestinal tract but does not invade deeper layers of the intestinal mucosa. Nonetheless, infection can be associated with diarrhea and marked mucosal inflammation.
