METHODS: A prospective study was performed in a referral hospital in south of Iran from 1999 to 2005. One thousand dyspeptic patients (518 males, mean +/- SD age of 49.12 +/- 12.82 years) consecutively underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. In this report, we describe a 6-year-old girl with a medical history of pallor, mild icterus, anemia, blood transfusion and abnormal hemoglobin variant analysis on capillary electrophoresis. She was referred for further analysis. DNA sequencing of the proband revealed a de novo mutation in Codon 88 (CTG > CCG) of the β-globin gene (HBB: c.266T > C) in a heterozygous state compatible with hemoglobin Santa Ana, an unstable hemoglobin. This is the first case of Hb Santa Ana from Iran associated with moderate to severe anemia who underwent splenectomy with clinical improvement.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is endemic in certain areas of Iran, and in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of reports for rare and new forms of cutaneous leishmaniasis. We describe one unusual clinical form of cutaneous leishmaniasis. In a 27-year-old man, who noted a pimple on the upper eyelid 4 months before. The lesion was nodular and measured 1 cm × 1 cm in diameter. A diagnosis of eyelid cutaneous leishmaniasis was made, and treatment was started with intramuscular meglumine antimonate. He showed a dramatic response, and the lesion almost completely disappeared.

The aim of this study was to determine the antimicrobial activity of two smoke condensates from Peganum harmala seeds. A total of 2,764 students were examined from five schools in Bang Pa-in, district, Ayutthaya Province, Thailand; 12 were found to have heart disease, a prevalence of 4.34 per thousand examined. Of these 4 cases were known by their parents to have heart disease prior to our study. The prevalence of congenital heart disease was 3.3 and of rheumatic heart disease 1 per thousand students. The incidence of functional heart murmur was 46%. The prevalence rate of heart disease in Thai school children was similar to rates in reports from Canada, America and Iran.
