Sepsis from Escherichia coli expressing the K1 antigen is a leading cause of death in neonates. In a murine model, E. coli K1 grew rapidly in the peritoneal cavity of neonatal mice, causing fatal disease. In contrast, adult mice cleared the infection. Neonatal mice mounted a rapid and equivalent antimicrobial immune response compared to adult mice. Interestingly, peritoneal fluid from neonatal mice contained significantly more total iron than that of adult mice, which was sufficient to support enhanced E. coli growth. Transient iron overload in adult mice infected with E. coli resulted in 100%

Convincing evidence is presented that oxygen free radicals are involved in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Superoxide is produced by polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN) in synovial fluid and by macrophages in the synovial membrane. Tissue damage typical for free radical attack is detected in RA. No absolute deficiency of protective factors is found in RA compared to controls, but the available protection is insufficient to cope with all radicals formed. The toxicity of superoxide is increased by iron. It is doubtful whether a low molecular weight iron pool is present. Superoxide

Plummer-Vinson syndrome (PVS), formerly known as Paterson-Brown-Kelly syndrome or sideropenic dysphagia, is a sporadic condition defined by the typical triad of symptoms, which are iron deficiency anaemia, oesophageal strictures and dysphagia. PVS predominantly affects women between the ages of 40 and 70. PVS, if left untreated or undiagnosed, may be associated with an increased risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma of the upper gastrointestinal tract or oral cavity, even in the absence of other risk factors. This case study describes a woman who is in her 50s who developed carcinoma of t

BACKGROUND: The association among aortic valve stenosis, gastrointestinal bleeding, and anaemia due to arteriovenous malformations, known as Heyde's syndrome (HS), is poorly understood and controversial. Recently, acquired Type 2A von Willebrand syndrome (vWS 2A) was shown to be the most likely aetiological mechanism of anaemia.
CASE SUMMARY: We report two cases of HS in whom the percutaneous replacement of the aortic valve was resolutive for iron deficiency anaemia.
DISCUSSION: Iron deficiency anaemia and aortic stenosis are a common association in the elderly, so much that frequently; in s

BACKGROUND: To discuss the clinical features of a patient with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT).
METHODS: The clinical data of one patient with HHT are retrospectively analysed. In addition, we review the relevant literature.
RESULTS: A 32-year-old male patient was admitted to the hematology outpatient department of our hospital and presented with intermittent epistaxis for 24 years. In recent years, he was diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia. The nasal endoscopic examination showed telangiectasia at the front of the right-middle turbinate and the left nasal cavity. He had ENG g

Anemia is a global health problem in all age groups. According to World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 40% of pregnant women are anemic. Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) due to nutritional deficiency is the most common cause. The incidence of IDA varies worldwide depending on the socioeconomic status, but it remains the leading cause even in developed countries. Physiologic anemia of pregnancy due to relatively higher expansion of blood volume in comparison with elevated red blood cell mass also occurs frequently. Complete blood count (CBC) in the first trimester is recommended for all p

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease, an immune-mediated inflammation of the small intestine, occurs in genetically predisposed individuals, and is caused by sensitivity to dietary gluten and related proteins. The global prevalence is approximately 1%. Celiac disease is frequently associated with extra-intestinal manifestations, including iron deficiency anemia, dermatologic eruptions, type 1 diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, and connective tissue disorders, but is rarely associated with cardiomyopathy.

It is recommended to delay cord clamping in healthy term infants for at least 60- and 180-s in high- and limited-resource environments, as delayed cord clamping lowers the incidence of anemia and iron deficiency and improves neurodevelopment. There are improvements in hemodynamic parameters such as peripheral arterial oxygen saturation, heart rate, cardiac output, and cerebral oxygenation. Historically, delayed cord clamping caused a higher rate of hyperbilirubinemia and phototherapy, but more recent evidence suggests this may no longer be the case. In limited-resource environments delayed cor

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer and inguinal hernias are both common surgical pathologies in the elderly but rarely co-exist. Where the conditions overlap, there can be difficulties in both diagnosis and treatment.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 78 year old man with unexplained iron deficiency anaemia was investigated for gastrointestinal cancer. He was found to have enlarging bilateral inguinoscrotal hernias. CT colonoscopy revealed a herniated caecal carcinoma contained within the scrotum. An open excision was performed.
DISCUSSION: Iron deficiency anaemia without obvious bleeding is associated w

Since the discovery of Helicobacter pylori, several studies have investigated the hypothetical role of this bacterium in various extragastric diseases, e.g. ischemic heart disease, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, iron-deficiency anaemia, and other disorders. The majority of these studies are epidemiological or eradication trials, but there are also case reports and in-vitro studies. Idiopathic thromobocytopenic purpura is the disease that shows the strongest link with H. pylori infection. There is also evidence of a role of CagA-positive H. pylori infection in iron-deficiency anaemia and

Usual causes of intolerance to thyroxine sodium include coronary artery disease, advanced age, untreated adrenal insufficiency, and severe hypothyroidism. We describe 4 patients with iron deficiency anemia and primary hypothyroidism. After treatment with thyroxine sodium, these patients developed palpitations and feelings of restlessness, which necessitated discontinuation of the thyroid hormone. After the anemia was treated with ferrous sulfate for 4 to 7 weeks, they were able to tolerate thyroxine sodium therapy. Iron deficiency anemia coexisting with primary hypothyroidism results in a hype

The RBC distribution width has been reported to be of value in the discrimination of iron deficiency anemia from other microcytic anemias, but studies in pediatric populations are lacking. A population of 734 normal children was studied to establish age-appropriate normal values for RBC distribution width. The RBC distribution width of 47 patients with microcytic anemia was then evaluated. RBC distribution width was elevated in 19 of 22 patients with iron deficiency but was also increased in six of 14 patients with thalassemia trait and two of 11 patients with anemia secondary to inflammatory

Zinc and iron status have been measured in three groups of polycythaemic patients managed by venesection: polycythaemia rubra vera, secondary polycythaemia and idiopathic erythrocytosis. Zinc status was assessed from the concentration of zinc in polymorphonuclear cells (PMN) and plasma. The mean PMN zinc value was lower than that of age-matched controls (polycythaemics 57.5 +/- 2.3 micrograms/10(10) PMN, n = 26; controls 68.9 +/- 5.2 micrograms/10(10) PMN, n = 9; means +/- SEM, p less than 0.05). The difference was most marked in polycythaemia rubra vera; the patients were iron-deficient. The

Studies of red cell metabolism, erythropoeitin concentration, iron and folate status were made in 48 children with protein-energy malnutrition in Johannesburg (altitude 1800 m). Biochemical evidence of iron deficiency was presented in 26% cases on admission and developed in 90% during recovery. Biochemical evidence of folate deficiency was present in 14% of cases on admission and resolved on dietary therapy alone. Serum erythropoeitin was increased on admission and remained elevated during recovery. There was no relationship between serum erythropoeitin and Hb concentrations. Key enzymes in th

Zinc, copper, iron, magnesium, and chromium were analyzed in commercially prepared total parenteral nutrition solutions of amino acid/protein hydrolysate, dextrose, lipid, and water from several manufacturers. Concentrations of each varied with both the manufacturer and the solution lot number, with the greatest differences observed for zinc (0.026 to 4.04 mg/liter) and iron (0.025 to 1.370 mg/liter). Since the consequences of prolonged total parenteral nutrition with trace-metal-deficient solutions are dependent upon the physical state of the patients, the duration of hyperalimentation and pr

Various factors are involved in the pathogenesis of anemia in dialysis patients. Reduced erythropoiesis is mainly attributed to erythropoietin deficiency. Stimulation of erythropoiesis may be promoted by androgens. Substitution of iron is recommended in case of iron deficiency. As a rule, supplementation of vitamin B12 is not necessary, but administration of folic acid is recommended. Treatment of anemia in renal failure is rendered more effective by increased technical efficiency in hemodialysis permitting a relatively protein-rich diet. Blood transfusions are not necessary during routine tre

BACKGROUND: Despite large populations carrying traits for thalassemia in countries implementing universal iron fortification, there are few data on the absorption and utilization of iron in these persons.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether iron absorption or utilization (or both) in women heterozygous for beta-thalassemia, alpha-thalassemia 1, or hemoglobin E (HbE) differed from that in control subjects and compound HbE/beta-thalassemia heterozygotes.
DESIGN: In Thai women (n = 103), red blood cell indexes, iron status, non-transferrin-bound iron, and growth differentiation factor 15 w

Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA), the most commonly inherited ataxia in populations of European origin, is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a decrease in frataxin levels. One of the hallmarks of the disease is the accumulation of iron in several tissues including the brain, and frataxin has been proposed to play a key role in iron homeostasis. We found that the levels of zinc, copper, manganese and aluminum were also increased in a Drosophila model of FRDA, and that copper and zinc chelation improve their impaired motor performance. By means of a candidate genetic screen, we identified that ge

Recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) and intravenous (i.v.) iron administration may be useful tools to save blood in surgery. In the perioperative period, rHuEPO should be used in slightly anemic patients for whom an autologous predonation program is not recommended (or feasible). In such cases, i.v. iron is only given if there is a functional or real iron deficiency state. In the post-operative period, i.v. iron is administered in association with rHuEPO in an attempt to rapidly correct severe post-operative anemia. The same regimen is used for patients undergoing surgery for inflammator

An increased incidence of E. coli sepsis has been observed in neonates given intramuscular iron-dextran for prevention of iron deficiency. Mechanisms for this apparent effect on susceptibility to infection were investigated by comparing phagocytic and antibacterial functions in paired samples of venous blood from 7 infants, median age 5 days, before and after iron-dextran. Post-treatment sera had increased inhibitory effects on leucocyte chemotaxis and markedly reduced bacteriostatic effects agaainst E. coli. The clinical relevance of the effects on chemotaxis is uncertain. The reduction in se
